Meeting letterboxers "on the trail"

Wow! In my seven years of letterboxing, I have only once (to my memory) met a letterboxer randomly on the trail. Today, while seeking BaliWho's creepy crawl boxes with LaLaBirds, we encountered the great Sir Mikiel while retrieving our first box of the day. At our third box of the day, Perfect Pair appeared on the scene, along with Sir Mikiel again. Exchanges were made, names now have faces, and it was indeed a bonus to our fabulous day of letterboxing. Outside of events, how often have any of you met other boxers while letterboxing?

You're not the first, nor the second, nor even the third to meet the elusive Sir Mikiel on the trail.

It sure was a special treat to meet up with Sir Mikiel, and then Perfect Pair! So nice to meet fellow letterboxers on the trails!

My husband and I were so happy to meet you 3 and put faces to your signature stamps! Since we started our adventure in June of 2008 we have only randomly met 3 boxers on the trail...the First being Ypsitucky Queen and Her son baseball boy...the third was when my husband was checking on one of our boxes and he ran into full moon bunny...So imagine our surprise when we met in one day what it took us 3 years to meet on the trails! So a big shout out to Baliwho for the awesome series that not only gave us a great letterboxing adventure, but also gave us the opportunity to meet 3 more fellow boxers!

Angel Winks, please understand I'm not trying to outdo your achievement, I'm just saying that the esteemed Sir Mikiel, like a wandering will o' the wisp, often seems to materialize in the strangest of places. It only adds to his air of mystery.

For a long time I had the goal of meeting the elusive Angel Winks, but happily I've achieved that one. I have never had the pleasure of meeting Sir M, and when Tami of Perfect Pair posted on fb that she had today that sparked a flurry of messages.

I ran into Ypsitucky Queen and Rascal on the trail not long ago, and Penguin and I also met her on the trail last New Years Eve. Once when Penguin and I were looking for a MichKathy and Trail Mark series we happened to encounter them while they were out doing maintenance. And Penguin and I met kansas chick stuckin ohio for the first time while looking for a rest area box on I-94. I think there was another time or two when I met boxers on the trail, but it's not currently coming to mind

Another time I was driving past a spot where I have a box and I noticed several woman sitting on the ground near the tree where the box is. I pulled over and introduced myself as the planter while they were stamping in.

Then there was the time Penguin and I were doing Cathead Bay. My son was going for a run in the same park and he heard a couple talking about letterboxing. I encountered them on the trail, but like a deer in the headlights I said nothing. Afterwards I was kicking myself and I've always wondered who they were.

Impressive list of "meets," Dawnkey. Wow.

Hey, how about if you come on over to the West side of Michigan on February 4 and spend a whole day with the elusive Angel Winks? :) There's an event seat waiting for you!

About a year or so ago, I went to a library in a nearby town to get a letterbox which had been there for some time but I had not gotten to yet. It was a weekday, maybe around 11am...? Anyway, a boxing buddy of mine from Iowa was walking toward the exit, just as we were coming in, and we did the whole "What are YOU doing here?!" thing, and it turned out that he was getting the same box as he was passing through the area for his work....I was just getting it on a day off from my job. It wasn't necessarily on a TRAIL, but we were both randomely going for the same box on the same day, at the same time! That was really a fun time!

And how could I forget that I met my friend Poofmagicevilkitty while stamping into a Ypsitucky Queen mystery box?

Beat her to be first finder by about five minutes. ;)

I have met Siebran, while on the trail in Chattanooga. I did the whole, "Which way is North" sign and everything. She had several Girl Scouts with her, so that was a hoot. They ended up meeting someone else on another trail, right after that. Funny that we are both from Florida, and she had found some of my boxes before.

I met DS on the trail in SC. There was an event, but it was day before event and at a different park, so somewhat unexpected.

I met T4, not on the trail, but at my daughter's horse lessons. So funny, she recognized me from Facebook. She said to me, "You're Florida Four!". I was so shocked! LoL!

But what's funny about this is Sir Mikiel was here in FL doing some of our boxes and he left a note saying they were gone?
Yea because we had them and were sitting at a table with RedCurl, whom we had just met!
He came in the Nature Center, and never noticed us stamping in...

That's awesome! Glad you had fun and met some other boxers! So, being MIA for a while, I'm confused about relationships here. Are Sir Mikiel and Perfect Pair boxing buddies and they were together? Or were there actually three separate "groups" of boxes converging randomly at the same box? (Speaking of Creepy Crawl boxes...watch the new box postings today).

Popo and I met Milagro once back in the day in Hines Park. I met a couple very suspicious people in Florida last winter. They were looking for the same box as I was. It took me about 30 minutes, took them 2+ hours. I don't remember their names, but I did do an exchange. I think I have met a couple other random people but I'm having trouble pulling the memories out of my head.

We were camping up near Mackinaw and met a family on the trail. They were from Wisconsinor Minnesota. Funny thing is they knew Andrew. The wife had dated him in college :)

Yes, Bali, five people, but three groups. And it actually was a bit creepy at one point. LaLa and I had met Sir Mikiel at the first creepy crawl box we got for the day, stamped in with him, exchanged, and we moved on to the second box. We just discovered where it was and were headed there when we noticed a vehicle parked in the cemetery nearby. So we wandered and did the thing where one acts like every headstone is so very interesting (hoping the vehicle would soon leave). It just sat there. So we headed to our car without the box and decided to do it later. Then the vehicle left so we quickly grabbed the box, stamped in, and left for box #3. And that's where we met Perfect Pair and they told us they had been the ones in the vehicle, but they didn't know that we were letterboxers.

So it turned out to be a cool kind of creepy :).

My husband and I had never met Sir Mikiel prior to this (we have only ever happened upon 3 other boxers on the trails in the last 8 years, and we met a handful of boxers at a mini meet a few years back...so all and all not many "know who we are" other then by our stamp, and that is how we "know" most other boxers lol) it was truly a fluke that we happened upon Angel winks and LaLaBird when we were going for a box...we did not know at the time that they were letterboxing, unsure if they were just 2 people visiting a cemetery or not ( I think that is a thing some people do right? lol)we waited for them to leave the area, circled back, got the box, went a few feet away to stamp and along came Sir Mikiel. He called us out at being letterboxers, I admitted we were guilty as charged...We introduced ourselves and he said that he seemed to be following Angel Winks and Lala Bird, then we knew that is who had we spied...we parted ways (kicking ourselves for not getting an exchange), headed to the next box and and ended up meeting Sir Mikiel there too, so we decided to partner up for that box, and then we ran into Angel Winks and LaLa Bird, who promptly offered to exchange with us. All in all it was a very rare and unexpected occurrence, but very much welcomed! :)

Lol, yes it was, and yeas we kinda did...and funny thing, we had a few boxes to finish up today from the creepy crawl, and we found a few other in that area, so we headed out for the day and found that we were behind Angel Winks and LaLaBird on almost all of the boxes we found today too :)

and as for Dawnkey's cool box on her reply, I know she responded on the "how" but I always found this page to be helpful to teach me the little tricks of the trade too :)

The first time I met Aurora with kiddos (not so kiddo anymore as one drives now) and Site Sleuths, we also met some letterboxers from the other side of the state. We were all in Hell, MI.

In 2010, met Socks 3 and Tyger2010 in Saline. Later that year, while boxing with Papa, we met MI Rattlers and Pink Ribbon Traveler.

In Canton, I met Digus.

During that Pirates event for you all, I was up here for the weekend for a wedding. Tom and I met Tisket Tasket.

The Pink Dragon and I met a dad with small children letterboxing at Durant Nature Preserve during my last few weeks in NC.

Not on the trail, but Pugs and Bee and I met a letterboxer in her home on Thanksgiving.

I ran into NorseGnome in the U.P. (Obviously) while finding one of their boxes. They happened to be camping nearby at the time. We even ended up parking at their campsite to get another one of their boxes.

I think I used the "letterboxing permits" line on you at Duncan Woods in Grand Haven, but we met up with you at John Ball Zoo later the same day.
