Douglas State Forest
Board: State: Massachusetts

OK, I know there are some Douglas State Forest lovers in here. We're looking to plot out the boxes in the forest, and am looking for a map with the gate numbers on it. Anyone know where I could find one?

Also, are none of the trails blazed? The map I found on the DCR site isn't terribly helpful, as you can see.....

Any info would be greatly welcomed!
Thanks!
BB

I use your doc a lot, Arf, which is pretty sad, considering.

The DCR has been naming trails and putting up signs. Unfortunately, the map hasn't caught up to the newly named trails, which leads to some confusion. The ranger I asked (last year) didn't know when they'd come out with a new trail map.

And of course, are clues getting updated when DCR updates trails?

Yikes, this will be tough.

For the last 4 years I've had a goal of finding every box in DSF and just completed it about 5 weeks ago. Yeah for me!!!!! For the most part the trails are easy to follow and well marked. One thing I really like is the main trails are not eaten up by ATV and dirt bikes. I spoke with a ranger last year and he agreed a new map should be made but know if one was in the works. Good luck on your quest BB and don't plan to do it all in a w/e. Rocklun and Southpaw have some clever clues for you to follow among other planters.

I think most of mine are updated, but I haven't checked on some of the boxes in a couple of years. So if you find that things have changed, please let me know so that I can update the clues.

It shouldn't be that tough. They haven't added new trails (except one, possibly--I'm going to check on that when I return from Utah); they've named some of the existing trails. So if our clues say "bear left at the fork," the clues will still be valid even if there's now a sign at the fork.

One thing to be aware of: DSF (and other public lands here) are VERY popular with hunters. With hunting season approaching, make sure you dress appropriately whenever you letterbox in the woods of Douglas.

We are going to plug away at it slowly I think. We're finishing up Shelton this week for the Trails Marathon (I may go back on Wednesday to do some boxes in Woodbridge/Derby/Shelton, since I have the day off and TT is unavailable). Then I can't hike for about 1 1/2 weeks, and will be probably at Douglas on the 18th.

Thanks for the info!

I would just like to publicly thank those of you who have approximate addresses for your boxes :-). My GPS and I thank you!

I deliberately didn't use addresses for some of my boxes. It's a form of restrictions without actually being restrictions. :^)
