Menopause
Board: Boys are Gross, Girls Rule

I'm 51, and menopause is kicking my butt.
If it was just hot flashes, I'd be fine. But I also get headaches, nausea and light headed with it sometimes.
I've been given some advice. Primrose oil, lavender tea and a product called Hot Flash are some. But I haven't tried them yet.
What would be good for the headache? I've been told it could be migraine. It sometimes settles around my left eye. But it's not debilitating. Is there such a thing as a mild migraine?
I do get ocular migraine, but this is different.

Black cohosh is rumored to help with menopause symptoms. I personally think nothing compares to plain old aspirin for most headaches (and after cranial surgery, I had some doozies). Ice or heat to the forehead can help. I have also heard that soy products help with all menopause symptoms because soy beans contain an estrogen-like compound.

My biggest problem after menopause was sleeplessness. I found it hard to go to sleep sometimes. Melatonin has been a lifesaver for me. There's one kind that works to help you go to sleep, and a timed-release version to helps if you're prone to waking up in the middle of the night and not going back to sleep. And it's not narcotic, so there's no sleeping pill hangover.

Good luck finding what works for you!

That was the one blessing I had--no more headaches. I used to have migraines & gun-blast headaches that would stop me in my tracks, and I realized one day that I don't get headaches anymore.

Yes, there is such a thing as a mild migraine. I had migraines that were connected to hormonal changes. The headaches and nausea will probably disappear when you are post menopause. In the meantime, if it IS migraine, Immatrix is the best thing out there (It won't do a thing if it's not a migraine)

Personal experience for me, aspirin doesn't touch my migraines. I have had them for over 50 years now and the only thing that ever helped mine is prescription sumatriptan. However, if you don't want to go that far, sometimes a little extra caffiene helps.

The headaches and nausea will probably disappear when you are post menopause.

Unfortunately, not always true. I have been post menopausal for about 13 years and continue to get them regularly. My mother's migraines stopped when she became post menopausal so it looks like you have a 50-50 chance based on my official study of 2 people. Since you didn't get migraines previously, you could be in the good 50% group.

My mother-in-law swears by evening primrose. But I don't know if she had headaches too.
Good luck!

It sucks, I was pre menopausal when I got breast cancer and went on the drug Tamoxifen which put me into complete non estrogen receiving. ..no hormone,,,not decreased...none. So after lumping around for awhile, I did things to increase my seratonin levels. Google that and see if anything sounds right to you. I think the hormone stuff will level out as your body adjusts, think pregnancy and morning sickness...of course even in the worst cases 9 months cures that ;-) Read a lot of stuff and try out a few things. Fatigue, hot flashes and mind numbing muscle spasms were my thing...everything is more tolerable now and I still have 2 and half years left on this drug. Good luck
