Shallow cuts--very shallow. Don't let the gouge dive, either.

Keep it in your armpit before carving.

I was wondering about warming it. I noticed that while I was in the sun yesterday, my pink was even easier to carve than usual. Someone in my internet wandering in the last few days also mentioned that you could carve with your block on a heating pad to make it easier. I wonder how OZ would like that.....
I was carving shallower than usual. I will try to go shallower.

That's true also - I work under a lamp that puts off a little heat - not a lot, but I do notice as it warms up, the OZ gets a bit softer.

Don't try to love it. There is nothing you can do with it besides send it to me.

Take a small scrap piece and don't try to carve an actual image. Just play with how shallow you can carve, and still see an image. Like just barely shave, or sketch on, the surface. It will still show an image. It DOES take longer to carve, for sure. But if you carve shallow it is less painful. It does take a few carves to build up some strength, but you can do it! OZ LOVES Staedtler and Modified Staedtler, the thinner the gouge tip, the better. And even when my gouge is too dull to carve pink, it STILL loves it. It is the best ever, for carving tiny lettering and getting a super sharp, crisp edge.
I don't use OZ for really large carves, and I don't use it for carves that have a large positive image. But it does work great for carves with thin line positive images and lettering. I dont sand mine down, but I do take off the shine, before carving, with 100% acetone.
Also after I'm done carving, I quickly wipe the transferred image off, using acetone. It seems to stamp darker after that.

That's what I have been doing. I have a 1x2" piece that I have been playing with. My hands haven't been bothering me lately which is why I thought I would give it a go. They may just not be strong enough for it though. Oh well. I will keep playing, but I may just have some carving block to share. I have 2 slabs of B grade. I have only cut into one.

I've never had a problem, and I have never had my gouges sharpened. Only once did I notice a difference and it was when I tried an iron transfer. The surface curved and got really tough, but I may have left the iron on too long. I agree with the others it is not good for large stamping areas, but is real nice for detail.

I think I figured out my problem. I am a hold it next to your face and carve in your hand kinda gal. When I set it on the table and carve by moving the material, it carves with less effort and the edges of the cuts are smoother. Problem is, how do I see what I am doing if it is more than a few inches from my face? I'll get there.

Some problems you throw a little money at and they go away. Send 'em off for sharpening.

I have seen and tried the sharpening. I am really lousy at it. I usually make them worse. Most of the time I lose them before they need sharpening.

Someone clicked "funny" because I said that carving on OZ hurts my hands??? Hmm, maybe I should mention that my knee aches and I have a headache. Now I'll get on the Wassa widget today for sure!! :^/
(Maybe there needs to be an S&M board...)

I almost funnied this post to be a snot, but knowing what it's like to have sore joints and a headache, I thought better of it. I bet that first funny was a miss-click.
Riverkat, I will keep you in mind if I decide to ditch it. :)

Actually, my knee doesn't hurt that much today, and my headache is fading. I was just playing up the pain angle to see if the closet sadist took the bait!! ;^)
Yeah, it probably was a misclick. When I'm on my phone, I accidentally click "rude" a lot. I hope nobody takes it personally if I don't see it and fix it.

Some guys are in a diner for lunch and one orders a hamburger. When their meal finally shows up, the guy's burger is just a bun and trimmings, no meat. So he says to the waitress, "Where's the meat?"
"Oh, sorry. Here it is." She takes a meat patty from under her armpit and puts it between the buns on his plate. At everyone's startled looks, she says, "Keeps it warm."
As she walks away, the guy says, "I'm glad I didn't order the hot dog."

Also, if I prep and/or transfer with acetone, I find I have to wait 24 hours to carve or my tools drag and the material tears.

Thanks for posting this! My block of OZ just arrived, and I carved a stamp for my first LTC…. probably not the best idea to try out a new medium for this project, but hey. I've only ever used the pink stuff, and I really struggled with the OZ… I thought I was the only one.
I wish I could sharpen/modify my own gouges…apparently they used to have miniaturized gouges on stampeaz, but no more :(
