I like using the post office kiosk, avoiding the lines and hassle inside. I would love to see kiosks and drop boxes in shopping malls, grocery stores, gas stations, city building, etc ... Places I frequent.

Geesh, so much work. Just put it in the mailbox with the flag up. Your postman will weigh it, ship it, and leave you a note telling you how much you owe.

I think a scale would appeal to your OCD! Weigh it, add a few more LTCs and smidge of tape, weigh again, add more tape, etc!

Other than the blankety blank, I think Mikey might have a good idea!

I'm totally teasing you! My last tracker, everyone's envelopes were different sizes and weights, so I had to have each one weighed.

I want all the bubble mailers the same! Lol!

It's all good....

Yeah, it's like my mom says. "Sometimes you have a problem and you throw a little money at it and it goes away."

I hate to be the one to break this to you but not all places have that particular service. My mailbox is on the side of my apartment wall, has no flag, and if I handed the carrier a package to mail for me he or she would look at me like I was nuts, senile, or both.

Indeed. Certainly not around here. And even if so, why make the mailman interrupt his workflow to do this?

As a previous poster suggested, just buy a postal scale. They are very inexpensive. The problem, and this thread, goes away forever, and you never have to think about it again.

Would that so much (virtual) ink be spent on interesting letterboxing clues :)

Mine has: left it in the mailbox unsent. And also mailed it anyway, and it comes back to me a week later, and I have to put postage on it.

Throw money at it! Lol.

Well, the mail dude left half of the mail/packages in the box. Guess he wasn't in the mood.
Why are postal people so weird?
Do we have ANY letterboxers that are also postal workers?

My old place didn't have a flag either. But that's bc I gave up many moons ago. The crappy teen thugs always ripped it off.

Don't let any of my female carriers hear you call them mailman. :) And yes indeedy...why make them do it? They have their own job to do. I figure mailing my stuff is my job. :)

What's wrong with this thread?

It has nothing to do with letterboxing.

But, carry on. I suspect you will, no matter what :)

(And, I was trying to be helpful, FWIW; a postal scale is the best solution to your problem, as stated, IMHO, tho I suspect that was never the point).

Uhhh, yeah, I'm pretty sure they do. Basically, every postman provides all the services you can get at the post office. You can ship packages, buy stamps, you name it. Much of it requires an overnight wait for a response, but they'll do anything the post office offers.

Until the post office changes its rates, or their scale differs from yours, or any of a dozen other issues. Complete waste of money and counter space, IMHO.

I've wondered if this board has any guidelines as far as appropriate topics. It seems to be a bit of a catch-all for topics that are only loosely related to letterboxing. For example, this recent thread was really lame! ;^)

Since I frequently mail letterboxing-related items, I'm interested in discussions about postage-related issues. I'm always surprised (and dismayed) by the way that different post offices handle LTC/postal packages.

Never had the first 2 issues with mine (weight is independent of rate; it works out fine if you weigh a package, then apply the appropriate postage for that weight (I imagine the fancy ones can be programmed; fortunately, I'm capable of looking it up, since have a cheap one)), and 3 ounces is still 3 ounces at both locations, which I suppose is a Good Thing.

So, I'm curious what the 12 other issues I have to worry about are? Should I be preparing for the postal scale apocalypse?

Ok, I'm willing to be educated. I looked on the web site and it says....

"Your carrier can pick up your shipment free during regular mail delivery if you're using an expedited service like Priority Mail®, Priority Mail Express®, Global Express Guaranteed®, or Merchandise Return services."

Nothing about regular old shipping. And the carrier never comes at the same time two days in a row. I don't see anything about scheduling a time, just the place. By the time I do all this scheduling and waiting I can just drive to the post office 10 minutes away and since it's small and doesn't get a lot of customers there is never a line. No big deal to go there and just do it. I'll be doing errands anyway and will just do this. No big deal.

Let's just all agree to mail our stuff the way we want to. We will anyway.

That's what I usually do. I've paper clipped a bill to the envelope and the change comes back in an orange envelope. I can then use that envelope to do the same in the future.

Do you think that there would be enough discussion to start a group for discussion of postage issues?

FWIW, I was at the post office today on other business, and asked about this. They don't do this in my zip code. Moreover, the postmaster said she was pretty sure they don't do this anywhere. Whether or not she knew what she was talking about elsewhere, or was just thinking about other zip codes around here, I can't say.

So, MissMoon was right. Bottom line, if this matters to you, check with your local post office. Don't rely on random forum posters :)
