Wish me luck...
Board: Yakking It Up

Our Company Halloween Costume Contest is going to begin in a few minutes. I'm really nervous... I had the foresight to send an email to the HR Director, making sure that my Employee Agreement doesn't have any sort of "Morality Clause" in it. But even so, I'd only give it a 50/50 chance that tomorrow I'm still employed...

Hmmm, I remember some of your previous escapades re: HR at your work. You're going to need all the good luck you can get!

I'd laugh because from most people, I'd think you were joking. But knowing you.... I'm just worried! I'll keep my fingers crossed--but then if all goes well, I expect a full report! =)

Ok, so... first off, the HR Director was conspicuously absent this afternoon for the party. I considered that a very fortuitous turn of events, and chalk it up to divine providence (well, that and the fact that she REALLY shouldn't have left her lunch unattended in the breakroom... innocent whistle).

A little background. About a year and a half ago, Fluffy Cow posted a link to cool idea for a Halloween costume. A week ago, it happened to pop up on the Wassa Widget, and I of course shamelessly glommed on to the idea: I was going to be the DeathStar! As is usually the case, I decided to take things a step (pace?) or two farther. Ok, a LOT of steps farther. So much so that I should have logged them into Walking4Fun.

So I got a gray T-shirt, and a dark blue polo short, and some black pants from Goodwill. I cut a hole for m'belly in the polo shirt, and painted the DeathStar stuff on the gray T-shirt. The pants... well, we'll get to that later. I got some sheets of star stickers from the Dollar Store (along with a bunch of Christmas stickers), and stuck gold and silver stars all over what was left of the dark blue polo shirt. Ta-da! A perfect 3-D DeathStar!

I got a Darth Vader helmet, and a small electric USB motor along with a USB battery. And velcro. Lots of velcro. I attached the motor to the top of the helmet, and (using hte aforementioned velcro), attached a long dowel (painted black) to the motor, so that it looked kinda like the blades of a helicopter. I used some fishing string and dangled some X-Wing and TIE Fighters down from the dowel, down to about belly-length. Yep... we had animatronics! When I flipped on the battery, the X-WIngs and TIE fighters zoomed around me in an unending battle.

So that was the DeathStar battle scene. However, I had one more tableau up my sleeve. errr... up something, anyway. Remember the pants I talked about? Remember how I cut a hole in a shirt to make a DeathStar? Remember I bought Christmas stickers? And remember how I had to check on the "Morality Clause"?

I got some bright (REALLY bright) green underwear, and put a bunch of Christmas Tree stickers all over the bottom. I took some little brown Gingerbread Man stickers, and drew little Ewok faces on them. Those were scattered among the little trees. I cut a big hole in the seat of the pants (leaving it attached at the bottom) (the bottom of the hole, I mean) (the hole in the pants, to be clear). I put a bit of velcro at the top to keep it all covered until the proper time ("proper" being a complete misnomer). And in the flap, using big gold letter stickers, I labeled it.

So yeah, when the time came for the costume contest, after showing off the DeathStar and the Battle, I turned around, bent over, and dropped the flap, revealing what the friendly gold letters called "The Moon of Endor".

I am pleased to say, I am somehow still employed. And, I won First Place. And did I mention I wasn't fired?

And here are the promised pictures:
DeathStar (normal size, for when AQ discards the big one)
Moon of Endor (normal size)
