So I am going to order some. However, there seems to be lots of options, can someone share their favorite of the bunch and why? Also shipping is the same no matter. Japan, China, Spain.

Order the white, not the colored material. Some of the colored stuff is so dark that it's hard to see a transferred image. Imagine carving an image on a Hershey bar.

I've really been wanting to try some of this stuff, maybe you could order a little extra and I can pay you for it?

I hear raving about this stuff all of the time, and how you need to order in bulk to get good prices on shipping. Maybe webfoot can be the one to buy in bulk and we can order from her, after the move of course.

The grass is always greener....

Sorry, but I'll take whatever Webby has to offer, knowing how much effort she has put in to trying to keep us carvers satisfied, over anything else, any day.

Not knocking anyone. Knock yourselves out with whatever makes you happy. But knowing that Webby is constantly trying to find something that boxers will enjoy, and spending who knows how much time and resources into finding something that every boxer might be able to say, "Yes! That's it!", whether it works or not, is enough for me.

I've been able to carve with FK, MZ, NZ and OZ (My fav being FK, need I say it again), and been able to work it out without a single complaint from any other boxer.

But go for it. No skin off my nose. I'll stick with what Webby has put the effort into, and I'll enjoy every bit of it.

And I'm sure that sweetloveqiner is a decent person trying to do the same. But I'd still pick family over friends, and if I had to choose supporting one over the other, I'd rather struggle helping someone close to me, than trying to look for what makes my life easier.

I know, I'm not getting across what I mean in the best way. I'm just saying that Webby has tried her darndest to satisfy what we're looking for, and her trials mean more to me than anything I could ever come up with.

I think you said it perfectly.

My last order from Webfoot, before the big move, none the less, was here in 3 days. Great selection, great product, great prices and incredibly fair on shipping. I'm intrigued by the other product, but not enough to jump ship...

I've bought all of my carving material from webfoot. I've been satisfied with it. I know that webfoot is also working on another material for the knife carvers. I'm looking forward to see what webfoot has available.

This is good to hear. I was working on some event planning this past weekend with some friends and we came across an old stamp of mine carved on orange. Orange is still the gold standard, as far as I'm concerned. Actually, we should probably just rename the gold standard to the orange standard!

I wonder if anyone else has thought about something that has been on my mind.
Webfoot no longer makes the carving material we all loved, for a reason. That was an environmental issue.
Now we learn that a wonderful carving material is available...manufactured where?? China? Spain? Obviously a country where anything goes, the environment be damned. Have you seen the news pictures of people in China who must wear face masks to breathe?
I, for one, will wait until Webfoot finds a formula that is environmentally friendly.

Okay...someone must explain the hardness/softness of all these materials. I've tried "pink" stuff from Speedball and it was too soft. I much prefer the large flat erasers I use...they are harder, but they don't shred like the pink stuff. FK, MZ, NZ OZ, pink stuff, flat erasers, and other carving material. What is the softest? What is the hardest? Where do the others lie in comparison? I feel like Goldilocks. She first tried the pink soft, but it was too soft. She next tried the "whatever" and it was too hard. Then she tried the "whatever" and it was juuust right.

BTW...went to Big Lots yesterday and found a package of three round fake lnls for $1.80. I would say they are about 4 - 4.5" in diameter and about 3.5" in height. I haven't taken them out of the wrapper yet, but that's about the cheapest for a fake lnl I've seen. If you need smaller containers, you might want to give them a try.

P.S. I forgot to check out flip flops while I was there, darn it!

I understand what you're saying, but there's no such thing as "environmentally friendly" plastic. The best we can hope for is the lesser of two evils, which is OZ in this case, I guess. I'm willing to take a karmic hit for the greater good and so I sling toxic-to-make, toxic-to-burn, non-biodegradeable plastic boxes into the semi-pristine wilderness and suffer the little black smudges on my karmic do-good-ometer, but I don't kid myself about its righteousness, either.

I sometimes buy inks and other goodies from Webfoot, and I also bought one block of OZ. As a knife carver, I just can't work with OZ. I think this is a well-known issue.

The SLQ material cuts great with a knife.

It's not really all about the hardness. Orange PZ Kut was probably the hardest stuff any of us will ever use short of linolem, but a hobby knife cut through it like greased lightning. OZ and Firm Kut are perhaps the closest thing to it in terms of hardness, but both are all but uncarveable with a hobby knife; knife carvers must convert to gouge carvers to use it. Pink stuff -- when it was any good -- was a bit on the soft side, but it didn't pill, it cut smoothly with a hobby knife, and it lasted forever in a letterbox exposed to Arizona heat or Alaska cold. The newer pink stuff is a bit softer yet, pills something awful, and crumbles in your hand if you mistreat it. MasterCarve, which has been gone for years, was arguably the softest stuff ever, carved easily, held up to the elements well, but would suffer damage if physically mistreated. It was also 3/4" thick, which was odd.

Then there is a long list of products that are NFG regardless of hardness: Speedy-Cut, Speedball blue stuff, Moo Carve, etc., etc., etc.

Next time I buy material, it'll be sweetloveqiner -- unless Webfoot comes out with a new product that can be carved with a knife. SLQ is harder than pink stuff, but not much. It's also a bit thicker, 8mm vs. 6mm. We don't have enough experience with it to know much about how it holds up for the long haul, but it does carve beautifully with a hobby knife.

Don't rely on color to distinguish between erasers. There are lots of different pink erasers running the gamut from stuff too tough to carve to stuff that crumbles when carved. There seem to be a LOT of opaque white erasers that are borderline carvable but feel a bit grainy and pill if rubbed. There are also translucent white erasers (vinyl?) that carve pretty much like MasterCarve did -- in fact, it's been suggested that Staedtler introduced MasterCarve when they learned that people were buying their erasers to carve.

The thing about erasers is that they're usually not as cheap as you might think. I've found a couple in Dollar stores that were actually pretty cheap, but compare erasers to the various carving materials on a cost per square inch basis, and you'll be hard pressed to find any good erasers that come cheap enough to be worthwhile. When you add the fact that you're compelled to carve images that will fit on the eraser, rather than being able to cut out whatever size and shape you need, and the wise carver steps away from erasers pretty quickly.

Is this what you are talking about? https://www.etsy.com/listing/158930364/1pcs-20cmx15cmx08cm-white-rubber-stamp?ref=shop_home_active_24. Just checking that I am following correctly.

Sorry, I am still new to all this carving! I remember carving a linoleum block in middle school, but until I found out about letterboxing, I didn't realize how much I enjoy it. I did find a slab of pink stuff from 2009. I hear that is good stuff.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's the stuff. The price isn't bad, actually -- less than regular retail price on pink stuff and actually pretty close to the price for pink stuff with a 40% off coupon. The problem here is the shipping charges. Hopefully buying a pile of the stuff would get the shipping charges down to a reasonable per-piece level.

Remember, you only need to buy this stuff if you're a knife carver. If you're a gouge carver, OZ works well enough.

Okay thanks. There are others on there by different sellers, would these be the same material as well? Saw a girl from Singapore selling some as well.

I am wanting to get better detail in my carves and I am listening to all this in hopes to learn. I watched a YouTube video last night where this girl carved a stamp with what looks like a box cutter and some fine detail too. She did it in next to no time. She was also on the news a couple times (youtube again) but since it wasn't in English I have no idea what she was saying.
