Need help with writing a clue

Hi friends!
I am planning an event at the library next month complete with boxes inside the library. One of them is Sherlock Holmes. I am not good at coming up with coded clues, so I need your help! I thought a coded message or mystery to solve for Sherlock stamp would be perfect. I would need it to be relatively simple, as we will have eight year olds trying to solve.

The clues should take you to the mystery section of the library behind the books with the:
Crombie
MYS

Clues can lead them to the computer to search for the call number, or take them directly there. Do understand our library is very small, so leading around library is not practical.

Thank you for all your help!
And if anyone is near Fort worth on June 19, feel free to join us! :)

One of the best coded clues for any Sherlock themed box would be the Dancing Man code that Sherlock himself has to solve in The Adventure of the Dancing Men . This one would be pretty simple for young kids to match up the dancing man image with the letter he represents and they will be working out a code just like Holmes himself.

Off the top of my head…

Sherlock was trying to solve this *MYS*tery at the zoo. First, he passed by the

1) lions, that are big _ _ _ _
2) not stopping to look at the big 'mice', the _ _ _ _ (rhymes with #1)
3) he passed the _ _ _ _ _ _ _, an eight armed creature that lives in the sea
4) and then the _ _ _ _ _ _ _, swinging from the trees
5) flew by the _ _ _ _ _, chirping away
6) shuddered when he saw the 'buggy", or _ _ _ _ _ _ display.
7) stopped the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _, whose trunk was packed up to leave
and exclaimed, "if I take the first letter of each clue, the answer I will receive!"

Cats
Rats
Octopus
Monkeys
Birds
Insect
Elephant

An 8 year old should be able to come up with the answers and they will have fun (I think) with it.

Best success at your event and with the youngsters!
