Canton Winterfest is February 8th - 17th. Fun and activities for the whole family.

This year there will also be a limited time Traditional Letterbox planted just for the time of Winterfest.

Come see our beautiful small town nestled between the St. Lawrence River and the Adirondack Mountains!

Clue will be posted on Feb 7th

Where did they serve beer by the yard? The Hoot Owl?

Pizza Rolls....I think that was a Sergi's product correct. Sergi's is my all time fav. Pizza.

Shameless plug....if you go to Winterfest...make sure you swing by Potsdam and get some chocolate at St. Lawrence Chocolates...maybe you will see Wyvern making chocolate, or maybe LOSTGirl working the register, or maybe the elusive CocoaCooCoo.

Ah, the days of doing lime rickey funnels at the Hoot Owl.

The North country run, is going first there, then to the Tick Tock, then to the next bar, etc etc, and having a drink at each.

I have never had Pizza rolls any other place, and I loved them!

Definately the Hoot Owl!! And then on the way back to Clarkson/Potsdam we would stop and "visit the Tuba Man"...

We always went to Cornwall for great Chinese food....

Now there is a Chinese buffet in Canton and two in Potsdam.

The Winterfest calendar of events is out...check www.coantonnychamber.org or www.northcountryguide.com calendars.

A last place to look next week would be www.northcountrynow.com.

Weren't there two pizza roll joints? Josie's and Sergi's? One was deep-fried (gasp!), and one was not. And I don't know about beer by the yard, but I do remember dollar pitchers at the Tick Tock.
I date myself...
But best memories? X-country skiiing on the golf course under the Northern Lights... Blue, blue, skies and White, white snow, outings to Lampson Falls and Catamount, a million shades of brown in the fall, (after leaf-fall, and before snow). Willow Island bread and vegetarian entrees. Canoeing on the Grasse River. The yarn/knitting shop. Meadowsweet yogurt. The Farmers Market and Potsdam Coop.
Ahh...

Yes, Chinese in Cornwall. Do I remember that it was called the New York restaurant? My first sweet and sour sauce ever. How about drinks with umbrellas and dancing at the Tiki Hut?

OMG! The Tiki Hut??

This is such a weird coincidence...LOSTGIRL and I were just thinking about that old place. How it burned then got rebuilt as the Hut, then burned, then got sold and rebuilt as Points South or something or other...

Maybe we oughta have a gather up here...didn't know so many had such connections to the North! Sergi's has a banquet hall...

You could tempt me back to Canton given the right date (and weather). I'm sure I'd hardly recognize the place! Here's another blast from the past - could the Raquette River Rounders provide music?

Yes, you might not recognize the place...

Josie's & Sergi's still running strong, but Willow Island Restaurant is gone...they turned that whole spot into the park (had to do some major clean up) There is a newer restaurant: 1844 House (replacing the older one by same name) on Rt 11 Between Potsdam and Canton that serves lots of vegetarian entrees. The yarn/knitting shop is gone in Canton as well, by Misty Hollow in Potsdam carries lots of knitting supplies as well as a new place in Canton called Linsley Woolies, I think.

Can you tell I would for the chamber of commerce???

The Farmer's Market is bigger than ever and the Coop in Potsdam is still doing great.

Thanks for the Canton update! The Willow Isle spot must make a good park- I remember going behind the restaurant to watch the water on more than one occasion. If I make it up, I'll have to try to plant a drive-by there...
The Horseflies (an Ithaca-area alt. band) sing a song about Ithaca called "I Live Where it's Grey". In the midst of grey-sky season, I always think of the crisp, clear North Country with nostalgia, choosing to forget the "c" besides crisp and clear (COLD). Turtlenecks are no longer part of my wardrobe. I only spent 6 years in Canton, but they marked me, for sure.
