fernbank science center closing

So it seems that there is a last minute effort to rally and keep the Fernbank Science Center open. It starts at 10 AM today at the center.

http://northdruidhills.patch.com/articles/fernbank-science-center-supporters-plan-rally-for-this-morning

If this fails, I've heard they will close down the facility on the 20th. For those of you with boxes at this location (in the exhibits/on the trails), if you need me to pull your boxes for safekeeping (I live really close to Fernbank) let me know.

Honestly, if they do announce official plans to close it, make the executive decision and pull them all even if you have not heard from the planters. That is better than leaving them there.

Me too. I still have the scars from those stupid holly bushes. I dislike holly bushes.

they must have seen all the injuries reported from strangers digging in the bushes and took them up! Ha! We were the last ones to find the little box. It was a long and exhaustive battle, but with a pair of jeans wrapped around arms, it was there, just a very small box that was difficult to grab. Ah, the memories of letterboxing...

Just spoke with a woman at the science center. The board is meeting today at 1 to discuss the fate of the center. She wasn't able to give me any more information.

In case the board decides to shut it down - the trails behind the science center are open until 5. I don't get off work until 5:15. If someone else can get to the center to grab black gold and lost world, please do and post here. If not, I'll be doing a jail break after work.

Scooters Mom has volunteered to do the box saving if the verdict is bad.

I found the following on http://www.examiner.com/article/deadline-to-save-fernbank-science-center-today

The forest has already been slated to be closed to the public as of June 30 - It seems it will only be accessible to those affluuent enough to be able to afford a member of at least $95 a year.

It appears the forest will be taken over by Fernbank Museum of Atlanta on July 1. I'm going there tomorrow morning to look for the boxes. I can't count the number of times I've driven by without taking the time to stop.

Let me know if you want me to pull them or if they should be left for a few more days for others who kept putting them off.

If you could wait a few days, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to go by and get them before they're pulled, but I won't be able to until Friday. The one time I went by, the center was closed and I haven't had a chance to go back.

We enjoyed touring the science center, the garden, and the forest for the first time in 20+ years. They were building a fence around the vegetable garden today. When did the garden get chickens?

The woman at the front desk said the 40 year lease on the forest expires on June 30 and won't be renewed. She thought an entrance might be made to the forest from the Fernbank History Center but nothing has been done yet.

Lost World and Black Gold are still there and in great shape. It was fun looking through 7 years of signature stamps and notes on Lost Wold. It will need to be pulled by June 30. Black Gold's future depends on what the school board decides tonight.

We also checked on the retired Venus. The prickly bushes are still there and have grown so big you can't get your hand under to check near the base in the corner. I was even wearing gloves, just not long enough ones.

Okay so I fudged on getting the stamps out while it was still open to the public. I had a terrible sinus infection that knocked me flat for almost a week.

But yesterday I was able to jailbreak Black Gold. The trail gate was padlocked and I didn't want to attempt a climb over by myself so Lost World is still out there.

The Fernbank Science Center and the garden will continue to be open to the public. The forest is now being run by the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and is temporarily closed. This was the only information I could find about the forest.

Well, it’s been 6 years since the start of this thread and we have finally gotten back to check out Fernbank Forest now that it’s open from the Fernbank Science Museum side (it’s actually been open for a few years I thibk) Definitely a cool place and it was nice to walk through the forest again. And guess what was still there?? Lost World was still hiding under the bridge and pretty much in good shape. The logbook was a little damp and the binding rusty - but not surprising after being there so long. We’ve pulled the box and retired it. The logbook was fun to look through with so many finder’s original stamps!
