Board: Yakking It Up

I'm getting to the point that it is time to start deciding which smartphone platform I want to lock myself into for the next two years. :) I have used a Blackberry for the past 4 years, and have loved the email capabilities of it (which BBs are known for). Browsing, not so much. And I can't run Box Radar. :)

I have considered iPhones and Androids, but have yet to find an email app that will duplicate the ability of the BB to dump all my email addresses and text messages into one universal email box.

Anyone know if I can get the email capability I'm looking for on an iPhone or Android?

I have an HTC Sensation by tmobile. It is an android, and I love it! It came with an app that accesses my Google and Yahoo accounts in one inbox, and I can add other accounts as well. Plus this particular phone has an AWESOME camera! I took a pic of my son, his girlfriend and my grandson on the baby's first birthday, and was able to enlarge the pic to 16 X 20!! Plus, I have an app that makes it compatible with my tablet (an android Toshiba Thrive) and my laptop and my printer. It is also a WiFi hotspot, faster than the cable that is in this area.

I'm totally sold on this phone! Hope this helps!!

I like my HTC Incredible (an Android phone). I have all my email accounts forwarded to my gmail account. Because the phone is Goggle driven I can see all my emails and contacts on my Google account. So, when I don't have the phone handy (ie, out of battery), I still have access to all my info on my netbook - online! This includes: calendar, to do list, email, google docs, pdf's, pictures, and so on....

But the question I have is when you reply to those emails, does it reply from each individual email account (like a BB does)?

Do not get a Droid 4. If you love your BB, you will absolutely HATE Droid 4. I'm locked in for 2 years. I'm not saying all Droids are bad, but this phone is just stupid.

If I change the volume of one thing it inevitably changes the volume of another. For instance, I want to hear text messages louder but don't want to hear emails as loud. Either both are loud or both are soft. I have a freebie game that has ads in between. They blast me out of my chair if I set the volume so I can hear videos and music at other times.

On my BB I could choose whose emails gave me sound notifications and the rest were silent. I can't do that on this Droid. It's either all have sound notifications or none do. You also can't choose on the fly which email you send from. You have to go into each individual email to send mail from different accounts.

On my BB I could set different tones for different alarms. Not so with Droid. I can set different songs but not different tones. I want different tones. I don't like songs for alarms but I only have one tone choice and I don't like it. There are other tones for texts, etc. but not for the alarm.

On my BB I could turn my phone off every night and it had a setting where it automatically came on the next day at the time I chose. Can't do that with Droid and I haven't found an app that will do this. There probably is one, I just haven't found it.

Here's a BIG one: Droid 4 does not have a removable battery. There's a battery, obviously, but it is welded into the phone so if my battery dies I have to send the whole thing back to Motorola rather than find a cheap battery online.

I hate the Bluetooth interface. ONE time I accidentally said "Yes" when it asked if I wanted to "Contact" my mom instead of "Call" her and now it absolutely will NOT accept "Call" for my mom. "Contact" will email or text. So I cannot call her by using my Bluetooth only... I have to use the phone to dial her and then I can talk to her on the headset. Also, I can't seem to fine-tune the words. If I say, "Call Jim Cell" it sometimes says, "Did you say Call Jenn cell?" and I can't always tell the difference between Jim and Jenn on the Bluetooth voice. So I have to use the phone to dial my husband rather than hands-free also.

And my biggest pet peeve is that I never seem to hear this stupid thing. If I put the volume one notch higher, it is so loud I jump and if I keep it where it is, I rarely hear it.

If you love your BB

Sounds like you loved your BB for all the same reasons I have loved mine! I just love how BBs handle email, and am loathe to give that up with my 10 email addresses that dump into one convenient location...

Aiphid, any chance you can make Box Radar work on a BB? :)

BB has an Android app repackaging program, but I think it only works on the tablet BBs.

You can always go on E-bay and buy a different phone. It won't mess up your contract and mayeb you can find one you like :)

I just got a new one for 50 bucks and I like it :)

My Droid automatically downloaded the new OS without asking me and I had no choice. It just popped up and said that it had downloaded it so it could install now or later but didn't give an option not to install. Oh sure, I could just keep clicking "later" but I hate that. That's just plain annoying because anytime I've tried doing that, it pops up about every 10 minutes.

On my BB I could set different tones for different alarms. Not so with Droid. I can set different songs but not different tones. I want different tones. I don't like songs for alarms but I only have one tone choice and I don't like it. There are other tones for texts, etc. but not for the alarm.

The good news is that now I can set different tones. It's cumbersome but it can be done.

Another good thing is that now all of my sounds are in one place. I can change my ringtone sound in the same place as my alarm sound. That was really a pain trying to remember where to set each different sound (volume and tone). Ringtone was one place, alarm was another, notifications was another, etc. Unfortunately, the phone and I still disagree on what is a "notification" and what is not and I can't change the tone for my email without changing the tone for my calendar. Personally, I'd like to have a different tone for my calendar than my email and would prefer to have a different tone for one email than another. I'd also like to be able to tell it to only give a tone from particular senders. I guess I'll dig deeper into this OS to see if it's possible.

The bad news is that installing the new OS reset all of my defaults. Actually, not all of them, only some. Which is actually more annoying because I don't know what was reset until I run into a problem. It didn't reset the tones when I type but it did reset the vibrations when I type. Had a heck of a time remembering where to turn that off. It didn't reset my ringtone but did reset the ring volume. It didn't reset my email accounts but did reset which ones got notifications. It also doesn't "remember" which trusted senders I said to "always show" pictures from so I'm having to redo all of that.

Here's another bad thing... the widgets are different. Used to be that if I had a "folder" on my home screen, it showed a folder. Now it shows a mish-mash of all of the icons in the folder and I'm supposed to recognize that this mish-mash is a folder.

My bookmark widget is different. Used to be I could choose which bookmarks showed on my widget and the rest were just in the bookmarks when I went into the browser. My new bookmark widget shows all of my bookmarks. I used to have AQ, Hobby Lobby, and a couple local stores on my widget and the rest I'd just access from the bookmark menu because I didn't access them very often. But now the widget has them ALL so I have to filter through all of them to get to the 5 I use the most.

My dock can't be changed entirely. I haven't figured out why yet. I used to have my dock be (left to right) phone, contacts, text, email, apps. Now it's whatever, whatever, APPS, whatever, whatever. I can move every icon except the APPS icon. It has to be center. I don't know why. And I keep clicking it when I want to text. I can remove any icon from my dock except APPS also.

I'm still not sold on this stupid Droid. I am still thinking of creative ways to "kill" it when my contract runs out.

Let me know when and I'll come for a visit. You can 'accidentally' drop it behind my car and I can 'accidentally back over it.

you can also save other sounds and it will add them to the ringtone list.
somewhere a couple phones ago, I got the facebook pop and have transferred it from phone to phone. it is much less intrusive as a notification sound. however my ring is very obnoxious so I can hear it in my bag.
