Trouble logging an unlisted attempt
Board: Letterboxing Help Desk

I've tried several times to log an unlisted traditional attempt today and each time, it records it as a find. At first, I thought I didn't check the box for attempt, but I removed the find and tried two more times to log it...no luck. The unlisted box is called Surfing in USA. It is currently showing up as a traditional find.

This is unrelated and persnickety, but I'm also curious why AQ sometimes changes the capitalization of an unlisted box. I try to be very precise and list boxes exactly as they are presented to me. I noticed twice today when logging unlisted stuff that AQ changed the capitalization. This Surfing in USA box is one example. It is listed on LBNA just as I typed it and this is how I tried to list it. AQ changed it to Surfing In USA (with a capital I). I know that's not a huge deal, but sometimes caps are used or not used for emphasis and I'd like to be able to preserve that in the box title.

Sorry about that. Bug in the code, but it should be fixed now!

That would be because someone already recorded an unlisted find with that name and your find is attached to it. The database isn't very good at recognizing when the capitalization is different.

The easiest way around that that is to make sure you are the first person who record a certain box name. Maybe using the name of the location of where the box was located or who planted it.

If it's in the list box matching unlisted boxes--that's how it's going to show no matter how you change the capitalization. It has to be a completely new entry in the database for your capitalization to stick.

Thanks for fixing the bug! I appreciate it.

As for the capitalization, that makes sense, but I really did think I was the first to log this particular box. I'll keep your suggestions in mind going forward! Thanks!

Hmm.... I took a look at the code, and you might be right. It looks like I mis-remembered how the code works where AQ automatically capitalizes the first letter of each word.

The rest of what I wrote is true--however it's stored in the database is how everyone else will see it show up in their logbook. That might actually be why I decided to have it automatically capitalize the first letter of each word. A lot of people don't type with capital letters which drives some people crazy, and if I didn't auto-capitalize them, it would likely cause a lot of annoyance for people who would prefer titles use capitalization. (You're actually the first person to ever complain about one of the words not being capitalized!)

Maybe I can make the code detect if the person used some capitalization and only capitalize the first letter of each word if they didn't use any at all? If they used it on some words but not others, that would assume that they deliberately chose not to capitalize certain words and it should be left alone. Hmm.....

Okay.... I take back some of what I said in my last post. I was digging into the code more and this is what happens.... =)

When you click the "Create New Entry" to add new unlisted box, it'll automatically capitalize everything on the next page where you fill in and/or confirm the existing details.

At that point, you can change the capitalization to exactly how you want it and it'll stick. (But again, only if someone else hasn't already recorded the find on the unlisted box--otherwise, it uses what the first person recorded.)

So you can change how the capitalization is saved.... but only on that final confirmation page will it stick--and only if you were the first person to record the find.

I should also point out.... The spoiler tag is something that's embedded into the wiki/html markups, so it actually works anywhere you can type in wiki/html markup. Including AQ mail and clues....

Looks like someone has already used your suggestion. ;-)

I was trying to explain to a friend how this works and I notice it’s not on the markup page yet. Just sayin’. 😄

Actually.... it is on the markup comparisons page. I was a little lazy trying to work it into the Wiki and HTML markup pages, though, neither of which is as complete as the markup comparisons page. (You also won't find the wassa tag except on the comparisons page.)

I'll get around to fixing the other pages... eventually. =)

Actually.... it is on the markup comparisons page.

I was going to post that there is no way to get to that page, but I found it at the bottom (last sentence) of the Wiki Markup Help and HTML Help pages. I'm posting that information here so that others will know as well.

Is this something that is still available? I have an Android phone and can't find it. When I look for it in Play Store many sites come up but they are mostly for 'feminine issues' and one for the game of Clue. Any help or advice. Is there anything else comparable to it?

Clue Tracker is only for iphones. The android version was called Box Radar but it is no longer available. Rumor is that a new android app may be in the works.

Hi. TrailMark and I are the authors of the letterboxing app Clue Tracker. It's currently only in Apple's App Store but we *ARE* developing a version for use on Android. You can read about it more here:

Public vs Private messages on finds

I was wondering if there is a way to have the private messages on a find somehow listed in a seperate section under the Box Comments that only the owner of the box can see. Presently the only way to keep private messages is the keep them in you mailbox.

You can also copy those private messages and save them in the box notes section.

I agree with that but hoping that a new section could be put onto the Box Comments page that will list private messages below public messages.

I frequently get private messages that are not relevant to the box status, but just chit chat from the finder. I think having all those messages automatically saved to the listing would 'junk up' the listing, rather than be useful. Maybe there could be an "option" to save a private message that is meaningful for a specific box, instead of automatically saving them all? But it's not that difficult to copy and save to 'notes', as already exists.

Yeah, we save any that we deem save-worthy to notes. I don’t find to be all that troublesome.
Turning separately reserved boxes into a series...

Let's say I reserved 3 boxs seperately then decided they where a series... boxes are planted but I cant figure out how to combine the 3 boxes into a series. If I add a reserved box to and reserved box it thinks it's a novel box with a number for a name I think.

I'd just delete two of the listings and edit the third one to be a series of 3. That would be the quickest, easiest way of doing it.

Then when the boxes are ready to go live, convert the third one into a traditional series and you're done!

LBNA and AQ have different policies about adoptions--on AQ I believe the original owner's permission is required for someone else to adopt a box unless the original owner is known to be deceased. Even if the original owner hasn't checked in in a long while they still might and they'd probably be miffed that the box was taken over by someone else.

Ah, but that policy is about an abandoned listing on AQ.

The third paragraph of the Wiki I posted I thought applied:

The policy of not allowing adoptions extends to creating new listings on AQ of adopted boxes. In other words, if you adopt a box on LBNA, do not list it on AQ without the explicit permission of the original owner.
