Impeccable planning and flawless execution. Thanks, Super Hedge Hoggie!! Even when Mother Nature decided to muck up the one aspect of the event beyond your control, you carried on with a smile and encouragement and plan B. Incredible event!!

Y'all will be happy to know that we're putting our heads together for a November 2019 event at Mistletoe. The working title is Fall Get Away. Stamps will show the various ways to GET from place to place by air or land or sea. Information will come out in early 2019 so you can make your plans. In the meantime, put on your thinking caps and get those creative juices flowing. There are plenty of stamps just waiting to be carved!

For those who may not have stayed in a cabin, it was well worth the $! We had a cabin with two bedrooms, one bath, and a loft. Each bedroom had one double bed, and the loft had two double beds. It also had an open plan kitchen/dining/living area with cable TV, and had a large back deck, and a fire pit area.

I didn't realize that I wouldn't have to pack sleeping bags and pillows etc. so I brought all of those things. However, the beds were nicely made with good quality linens, and even towels and small bars of soap were included.

I can't wait to experience the cabins again! They were a great way to enjoy the weekend!

This was definitely a first class event in every way. Praise certainly goes out to everyone involved in making this a big success. Even with the rain pouring down, the letterboxers seemed to be in good spirits. The weather was tame compared to the snowstorm that met me during the last few hours of my drive back to St Louis today.

It's the attention to details and personal touches that really made this a fabulous event. (Loved the hand painted signs at the start of each trail.) BIG THANKS to SHH for being such a wonderful hostess.

It was great to see so many old friends again and put new names and faces together. The rainy weather definitely didn't stop this group from having a blast. Hope to see you all on the trails again soon!
Planting supplies for sale

Hi,

My husband isn't planting like he used to so I have supplies for sale:

I have a large block of pink stuff, a medium-ish block of off-white stuff, and a small thin rectangle of orange stuff ($5). I think the orange was obtained at the St. Louis event about 10 years ago; if not that, then the off-white.

I also have 9 new, in MINT condition, still in their packaging Lock & Locks ($40 for the box).

https://www.atlasquest.com/gallery/viewphoto.php?photoId=145822

I'm not really planning to ship unless we can work out electronic payment (I'm still in the dark ages). I live in Snellville (close to the mountain) and work in Midtown.

Please PM me.
Karen

I thought I'd read that these are no longer being made. While I'm not trying to gouge people, I am wanting to sell for close to what I paid. Someone can make me an offer.

Lock & Lock are not being made any longer but I find some replacements are just as good. $40 is way too much to ask.

We get LnL type containers at Target or online that are every bit as good but at a fraction of the cost. QVC (for example) sells 20 boxes for about 30 bucks.

We've discovered through bitter experience that some of the cheaper LnL knockoffs are not as good because the colored rubber seal in the groove is made of something that dries out and crumbles in a couple of years in the wild. It's probable that the seal in a genuine LnL is made of silicone while the ones in the cheaper products are some version of soft plastic. I have no doubt that some of the better latch-top containers use good quality materials in the seal, but I dunno how we'd know without subjecting them to a couple of years of outdoor conditions.

I’ve got some that have been in the field for a quite a while. I just got a report on a box I hid on July 10, 2009, they said it was in great shape.

Where did you hear this? I see them being offered on Amazon still - not the smallest ones, but still some that are letterboxing sizes for $$. Should I be buying every one I see at the Korean grocery stores?

From my earlier post in this thread...
We get LnL type containers at Target...

Here's a link to the brand we get at Target. 14 boxes for 22.99 works out to about $1.64 a box.

This set of 6 Lock and Lock containers will be available through Amazon on Jan 7 for $15.36. That works out to $2.56 a box.

Those are just examples with a quick search. You can probably find better deals or something more to your liking with a little research. Obviously you want to stay away from Rubbermaid and Glad snap on lid types. The key (for me) to selecting a brand is the seal. I always avoid rubber gaskets. Rubber does not hold up to the elements well and will always fail eventually. At the time I bought them, the Target brand had silicone gaskets. The Lock and Locks above not only have silicone gaskets but a double hollow gasket. Better seal with more flex for extreme conditions.

As for whether LnLs have been discontinued, I went straight to the horse's mouth. I wrote LOCK&LOCK Co., Ltd. and asked. When they get back to me I'll post their response here.

...the brand we get at Target.

Sistema brand, made in New Zealand. Those certainly look nice. The only thing they say about the gasket is that it's "flexible", so I dunno how to tell if it's silicone or not. The latches are hinged rather than flexible which I consider a big plus over the LnL design which have been known to snap off. The latches are only on the long sides rather than all four sides, though.

I'm pretty sure all these gaskets are hollow. They were hollow on the cheap junk Dollar Tree containers. I did buy *one* latch-top container a few years back on which the gasket was not hollow, and it was a bear trying to get the lid on and latched down. And it didn't seal reliably.

While we're talking about options and quality, if like to ask about the type offered at fred Meyer https://www.fredmeyer.com/p/snapware-airtight-food-storage-clear-blue/0088440802472
Which is my most readily available store in my part of Alaska. And obviously living here I will need my boxes to hold up (i have not yet even planted) Snapware- anyone tried it?

I have found quite a few of these boxed in GA where the climate is mild but often wet. Many where missing one of the snap closers, others appeared undamaged but had a good bit of moisture inside them...this could be used error and not a structural problem with the box. My gusse is they would not hold up well in colder climates, unless you found a very consistantly dry spot to hide or planned to check the box often.

I have no idea how they hold up, but I'm preparing one now to plant tomorrow. I'll let you know in a couple years. ;)
IMO not knowing is part of the fun. There are many factors that can make a box go missing. It's a quest to find a box and there are no guarantees you will. It's the quest that keeps me going. :)

According to information online, they use rubber O rings. I’m not sure that would be my first choice for Alaska. But letterboxing is adventure, right!? 😄

Rubber is not the best for this; it dries out and cracks. Alaska might be its best application, though, since I suspect heat makes it dry out and crack faster.

There's also the possibility that it's not really rubber, just described as rubber meaning it's a soft rubbery material. Some people just don't see a need for precise language.

I’ve never Letterboxed in Atlanta and will be heading there for a weekend full of Letterboxing. Other than Stone Mountain, any recommendations on any other areas or area boxes that are unique/wonderful? There are lots of boxes to choose from which is amazing (and can be overwhelming)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Happy Boxing!
