Oh come on, who doesn't enjoy a 3-4 day drive from the Canadian border to Anchorage to spend a weekend then drive back?!?

I hope we are at least ahead of North Dakota since we actually have more boxes here. And letterboxers too I suspect.

According to "The Letterboxer's Companion" by Randy Hall, letterboxes are against regulations to placed in National Parks. Yet, I have found them there and wonder if actually, I should ignore them if they are not legally supposed to be there. What do others say?

Any way to see how many exchanges you have? The way it's lised now is a little bulky and hard to find someone in there. I wish you could look them up like you do with the find people page and there be a button to click to add them.... just a thought Ü

When Randy wrote that book in 2004 that was true. Now there are policies that can allow for them to be planted.

So we have received all but one stamp for our series we are doing. They are all stamped up and almost ready to plant.

Raffle items are still needed. The raffle scratch ticket basket is done with about $100 worth of scratch tickets.

Please signup for food so we have enough for everyone. There will be plenty of stamps to stamp up inside and outside of the event.

Remember items for toys for tots are new unwrapped items.

Event stamps are welcome as well.

We will also do an ornament swap if you are interested in that, just wrap the ornament.

Alaska, really.

Don't blame the Alaskans for that one. After an Alaskan wrote that L&B wouldn't happen in Alaska, I suggested having an event in Alaska (in August) and see who comes.

Start here.

"Because of the diversity of GPSRA and the variations in the way they are (or can be) managed, the Service does not have a policy explicitly allowing or prohibiting any of these activities."

I stopped reading at that point since that answers the question that people always ask.

You can also go to your logbook then click the little down arrow in the box under Action on the top left. Select Exchanges and you'll get a numbered list of all your exchanges that you can sort alphabetically, by newest, or by oldest. I hope I'm in your list. :)

I’ve always thought the Hocking Hills region would be a beautiful location.

It definitely would be. I don't know how many active letterboxers are in that area, though.

From the NPS link:

Letterboxing involves the placement of a cache containing a stamp and an inkpad that enables participants to document that they found the specific location. Participants find the location by following “clues.” Clues often involve map coordinates or compass bearings, but most letterboxes currently in existence do not require the use of a GPS device. Although letterboxing is intended to be environmentally friendly, if the “box” is buried or concealed by manipulated vegetation or rocks, or will cause participants to create social trails or traverse sensitive or dangerous locations, the impacts will likely be unacceptable. However, it is entirely possible that some parks, particularly those with a vast expanse of backcountry, will have locations where a letterbox could be concealed and sought out without causing unacceptable impacts. In those cases, the superintendent has the option to designate locations where, or establish conditions under which, the cache could be left unattended—for example, in the same location as an NPS- sponsored summit log.

So the answer to the OP seems to be no, don’t automatically assume a letterbox in a National Forest is placed illegally.

Actually this link and your quote only applies to National Parks. Department of the Interior.

National Forests are Department of Agriculture which has never had a ban.

But essentially it is like many other state and local parks, whether the box is allowed is officially up to the park manager, if you choose to ask them.

As a general rule in my travels is I do not plant on NP property, though as some of you who have found my NP themed boxes they may be right over the boundary line (Zion, Bryce, Capitol reef, fossil butte) and some of those you have to drive through he NP to get to non-NP public land. I have found a few boxes on NP property but I doubt they were placed there with permission. Only one in CO, was at the visitor center and you had to ask a ranger. As eidolon said, you would need permission from the park manager otherwise.

I did not find this to be the same in Canada parks though.

Besides all of the other good advice people suggested, I'd like to also answer this part of your question:

I wish you could look them up like you do with the find people page and there be a button to click to add them....

If you do look someone up with the 'find people' page and look at their profile, you'll find the "Add as Exchange" button near the top of the page, just under their name. You can also tell at a glance if you've done an exchange with someone already because if you have, it'll show an icon of a cup of coffee next to their name. (If you already exchanged with someone, you won't see a button to "add" an exchange--you already did the exchange!)

Happy trails!
