In CT, we lived at the end of a power line, where we could lose power if someone even blew at the wires. After losing power for a week or more at a time during Hurricane Sandy and the ice storm later that fall, we ended up putting in a standby whole house generator, which ran on a 1000 gallon propane tank. Best investment we ever made!

Now here in FL, we already have a 220 50V (?) plug on the outside of our house which we can plug our portable generator into if we lose power. Our new house will have the same once completed.

It just so happens that my house has a main panel about 20 yards from the house, so I was able to put the 220V plug out there. That gets the generator a bit farther away -- a good thing, since they are noisy.

You can monitor the progress of the power company restoring power by going outside at night and listening for the drone of portable generators in the distance.

The generator I bought has a metal fuel tank. I saw a couple others in the back of somebody's pickup truck, and they had plastic fuel tanks. I wish mine had a plastic fuel tank! This thing is probably going to sit for years before I need it again, and it'd be good to have a fuel tank that doesn't rust.

I want to think that this post was funny, as I have monitored the power company's progress many times by just listening for generators.

Many hugs!

My grandma in Buffalo was without power for several days one winter. They bought a full automatic generator after that, which cost several thousand dollars. But worth it for a 90+ year old lady's peace of mind, I guess.

Sorry for the delay on the box of the month. The person who sends it to me finally picked it up this morning and is getting it out to me tomorrow which means it probably won’t be here until Tuesday. Again, sorry for the delay. I will try to keep it as long as possible before sending it on to Connecticut.

Just a reminder that December's Box of the Month is out and since it got a late start this month, we will be keeping it until January 2nd, so you will have all through the holiday break to get it.

Also, Santa Mickey will be out until January 2nd, and the NEW 2019 BOTM will be available starting January 1st!

So that means, if you want all three at once, you can stop by on New Year's ;-)

Hope to see you soon!

Is there still a letterboxer who works in the Christmas shop at Disney Magic Kingdom? I met her there once, but I can't remember her name. I'll be at Disney next month and thought I'd look her up if she still works there.

In my opinion, as a part time Florida hiker and an almost full time Pennsylvania hiker, all hikes in Florida are much easier than other areas because they are mostly level walks with no rocks in the trails (big time issue here in PA) although there are often roots in the trails. We just completed a hike which led to two boxes in Moss Park which is in Orlando. The walk was lovely and the boxes were terrific.

If you can get to any of Antisocial Veggie's boxes, you will be in for a very unique treat. She is probably the most creative boxer out of the almost 8000 boxes I have found. She is not in Orlando but can be rather easily reached with a drive up I95.

And, as a plug for my own boxes, I just planted 23 new boxes in Central Florida, mostly drivebys and short walks, including several on Merritt Island, home of the Ambassadors.

I agree with Janila. Most of the hikes here are short, and the trails are not hard at all. A few roots here and there, and a boardwalk or two, but they are not bad at all! You would get into some hills in the Clermont area, but there aren't any boxes in that town other than at the local state park. I haven't even gotten the two boxes there yet!

The Box of the Month is out each month for approximately three weeks, about six to eight miles from World Drive. And it's a driveby..... AND you can exchange with me if you let me know when you're coming to the box!

It's a new stamp each month too! New stamp, new find!

Hint, hint ;-)

Are you thinking of the Ambassador Owl series in Merritt Island?

If so and you are headed to Brevard County there is Sams House Pine Island in Merritt Island and also the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville.

Both offer either short or long hikes, depending on what you want to make of them as their are many trail heads/loops/spurs options so you are not stuck with hike in/hike out only trail.

Enchanted Forest is a combination of paved/dirt/sandy trails and frankly is one of my favorite park/trails. You could easily do a short hike here and stay on a paved trail that is much kinder to the knees than a sandy trail.
