yes I think this is a good idea to explore and one that has been tossed around intermittently. I'm going to be frank.

the letterboxing GLG group consists of: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

The states that are geographers consider part of the midwest are: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska along with Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Minnesota.

Removing the GLG group that leaves the following midwestern states, (not to imply a state could not be both GLG and Midwest):
Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska

All this said, what constitutes a "midwest" event? Will the thinking be to develop a group something like the GLG or a group with more flexibility in that if the state is one of the original midwestern states then it can host a "midwest" event, title it "midwest" regardless of other groupings or geographical associations?

To be quite honest, it hasn't been discussed in depth yet. Maybe my use of "Midwest" was too premature. I would like to host an annual event for people to attend from other areas in addition to GLG. We loved this event and would love to bring more people to this hobby and basically introduce everyone to all the people you swap daily AQ mail with. I will have more info when I discuss with my cohorts.

Thank you very much for bringing these items to the table. I will keep you updated as soon as we have a more detailed plan!!

It looked like Harold Parker was in the process of installing electricity to some of their sites. I am curious if anyone happens to know if there will be electricity at some sites in 2019.

I believe you are correct but the campground office is currently closed so we can neither confirm nor deny your statement! I'll have to swing by someday soonish and have a look at their progress, otherwise we won't really know before reservations start in January. I'll post all signups if/when I can make a more exact determination.

Just because set of people puts together an event doesn’t mean there can’t be another event where the geography overlaps. SW and PNW are good examples where multiple events get scheduled by different people/ groups.

I love this idea and an annual Spring event seems like a great idea since, as far as I know, there isn't an annual event in the Spring in the Midwest.

I also think an event using the term Midwest is a great choice. Midwest is a familiar term throughout the country and it's where the event is being held.

I just want to encourage you to go ahead with this. Not everyone has the gift of "event-hosting," and you and your cohorts do. I would much rather find or plant letterboxes, so I have a great appreciation for those willing to tackle all that goes with hosting events.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

We are planning an event next month, and had a question...

So we have only been to 4 events. Our recent was last weekend and all have been quite different in there own way to kinda the same. One of the things we have noticed is when the event time is ended... that's it

So we were wondering are you a get the boxes and go home or do you like to hang and social?

One on my favorite things to do at an event is to hang out before and after doing the trails/boxes. It is a great time for exchanges, PTs, table top boxes, to catch up with old friends and make new friends.

LOL The last 2 events I attended, I never even boxed! Hanging around and getting to know others is just as fun for me. And since there was always other people staying around event headquarters I know I'm not the only one.

It's always a nice option to meet up for dinner the night before or the night of the event. You pick a place that you know will accept large parties and are ok with separate checks. Then set up an additional event that people have to sign up for so you know how many will be there.

Some of each - box - stop and rest at the shelter - box again - stop and rest. I leave about dark unless we have to leave earlier, but not if there are night boxes. If everyone else is leaving by 5:00, I'll go find boxes in the area.

Night boxing, restaurant meet up. I usually stay over, so even a small worship service on Sunday morning at the shelter if in a park. Then finish boxing before starting home. Sometimes it is fun to help the planner pick up boxes that are not permanent.

My preference is to hang out at the shelter because I love meeting new people and catching up with old friends, but I play it by ear - if nobody is hanging around the shelter, then it’s time to hit the trails! I’ve been to some events where I’ve never left the shelter and others where the entire day was on the trail. It depends on the event format too, and if there is intended to be a shared meal at the end, etc. Also if I am staying overnight or if I have to drive back home would affect my decision to come back or not after boxing. Hoping to get to your Nov. event, at least for one day!

Oh yay, another event, hopefully we can make it up because I was so sad that we weren't able to meet up the other night!!

Personally, I LOVE to be there as much as possible. I know it is not feasible for everyone but I love to make the events overnighters (at least for me). I think *almost* every single event I have stayed overnight multiple nights. The pups and I had a blast last weekend camping, Yankee Springs is a GEM for camping, so when events are at locations like that, it is great! We have attended many events where we've camped out/hung out late into the night at restaurants or the shelters near a fire/etc and it has truly made the experience that much greater. So many memories from really awesome events and we cant wait to attend even more! So excited for yall, it'll be great :)

I'm excited that this will be my 1st event! When you are meeting and hanging out and you know someone has a PT and you mention pertinent info.... do you just stamp right there? Is there a time when everyone is chatting and stamping PT or is this kind of throughout the whole event? Just wondering "etiquette"!!? PS- I need to carve myself a PT!!!! and if you donated a stamp does it show up on your profile counts- who puts it there?

Oh nice! I don't know if I will be able to make this one this time as I have an interview for a new job in Nebraska (YIKES!) but if not, I am going to try and make it over. It's about 5 hours from Chicago so not bad, fingers crossed!

Unique Event Announcement: Murder Mystery

About a month ago I posted trying to gauge interest in a unique letterboxing event. Well, here it is.

It's 1920 and you have all received invitations to a River Boat cruise on the Ohio River from Doctor Thomas Briefkasten and his wife, Laura. You all know them one way or another. Maybe you are close friends, family, coworkers. Maybe you have attended one of their parties before. These two love birds are well known for their parties. Maybe you have only heard them in passing and wonder why you received an invitation to such an event. On a cold January evening everyone shall join the company of the Breifkasten's, but be aware, their drama can be hard to avoid.

It is a murder mystery event on the River Queen boat in Cincinnati, OH/Newport, KY. It has a limited registration and ticket cost. You can read more about the event below. Let me know what you think and if anyone has questions!

what are some tips? Dos and Don'ts?

Is there such thing as over planning? (lol I've been told I may be doing this)

Any Help would be amazing

There are usually more no-shows than last minute additions.
There is always way more food than people can possibly consume.
Some people prefer visiting with friends than finding boxes.
Some people will find every planted box, event box, exchange, PT, etc.
Sit back an enjoy--nobody's judging--and if they are, shame on them.
