It varies and it doesn't matter, except that we in either state are lucky to have so many boxes to search for.

I recently took a cruise/land trip to Alaska. I planted a box everywhere we went. You can find them with a city search.

If they have any integrity at all and you ask them what they are doing, they should lie! If you ask them point-blank if they are boxing, they will know you know and there's no point fibbing.

this reminds me of a funny little story.
i live in a very hectic house so often take a walk in the woods with a book.....find a good rock to sit on..... and read til i feel i can face the chaos again. being lucky enough to live within a very short distance of a very nice trail this is easy for me to do.
one day i am walking out of the woods with my book in hand and these two ladies are walking towards me. as they get closer they ask if i am letterboxing. i immediately answer no. see, i was not letterboxing i was reading! i continue walking another 6 feet and it dawns on me........ duh! they must be letterboxers and after the series i planted! so i turned around and said..... oh wait... i am a letterboxer! turns out they had noticed that i was wearing a letterboxing southeast tshirt. the ladies happened to be greenmountainhiker and grrly girl and they had indeed just finished with my series.

So, how many hundred letterboxes have you planted in these woods near your house? ;-)

The sheer number of boxes at Sleeping Giant changed to Unavailable and Unknown had quite an impact.

this whole issue vexes me each time I encounter a fancy, colorful stamp in the woods.

It's bad enough when the stamp coloring is detailed, you've got to figure out how to get one color into a tiny little corner among other colors. But sometimes the colors are meaningless! You look at the stamp and there's no reason it couldn't have been stamped all one color -- it might even look better -- but the planter shows it with all these different colors. Sometimes apparently they've just used one of those rainbow stamp pads.

For those that use teardrops, are they water based or pigment?

Gotta go pigment. Simply gotta. There's no comparison in how the stamped images look.

I have now posted all my plants and finds from my recent trip through southern West Virginia. I enjoyed this trip so much and wish I could have lingered a little longer in many of the places. Living in Texas now makes me crave the sight of the Appalachian mountains. West Virginia definitely fulfilled my need to see green high overhead in all directions.

Hopefully I can plan another trip through other parts of WV next summer, but in the meantime I look forward to seeing updates from any of you who venture out to find the boxes I planted. Some of them rank high on my list of favorites, so I hope they make it worth your drive into the wilds of WV (but I have a feeling the mountains alone will make it worth it.)

And those logbooks that get wet--the pigment sigs remain bold--all the others disappear. Just had that happen to one of mine.

It may not be a true count - there are always a lot of site boxes, etc, that people forget to retire after an event is over.

well altogether would say i only have 8 or 9 planted either in those woods or other trails connected to it. another local boxer has about 30 or so in the same woods but much further down and uses a different entrance. if i planted 100's think i could get finders up this way?

my $0.02
if you want your stamp to be multi-colored, do it as an out-line of your image. We can color in later, just like a coloring book image.
There's nothing like being a later (or even second) finder and the stamp is already all black ink.
When it's raining or the temp is hovering around 10*F, or lately 100*F, I want to get it and get going.

I find it's difficult to ink up a stamp with multiple colors while standing alone in the woods. I think everyone should try stamping every stamp they carve, but not at the dining room table ~ out in the yard after a rain ;~) And No, you can't sit down!

For me, the whole issue is the location. Finding a super detailed and colorful stamp on a trail with say, thick woods and no benches or areas to sit can definitely be a bit much.

There are some really talented and creative 'boxers out my way, who have planted multi-color or multi stamp boxes, and I'm super grateful for them. They are placed outdoors, off-trail, in beautiful areas where you can set up camp and have fun with it. Near a bench/ picnic table, a rocky area, or a place where you can throw down a picnic blanket is enjoyable for me. Also, the same goes for indoor boxes where you can sit (and don't really have to be stealthy). You usually know ahead of time what you're getting into, so you can bring your colors and expect to spend a little time there.

Also (and I'm sure most of you know this), if you carry a super light-colored ink pad like yellow, and ink and huff the stamp, you can sometimes get a pretty decent print with faint colors and not muddy up the carve. I know plenty of people do this even without the yellow ink, and just huff.

Just sayin' ;)

I recently found the Salt Kettle Salt Shaker letterbox and I huffed on it to remove excess ink. It was a brilliant move on my part because the image looks so much like a glass shaker. My second stamping (in black) didn't do it justice. I had another letterbox find (a mushroom stamp) that had various inks left behind and the huffed image was very realistic to a mushroom's coloring. Serendipity.
