Does anyone else think Ryan would be a shoo-in for the GOOBERnatorial race? He just needs to watch out for that rogue bull-moose party candidate.

Ryan,

Scorpions, ick, ick, ick. They give me the wim-wams. Love snakes, spiders are creepy, tarantulas are ok, scorpions are the worst. Personal opinion.

Your friend has some pretty terrible luck if they can give a first-hand account of being bitten by a scorpion and struck by lightning!

One time boxing on the Rock I scooped up a tiny salamander to move it so I could look for the box. Only it wasnt a salamander at all. It was a large (for GA) scorpion. It didnt bite me, so there's that.

Waxing pedantic: Scorpions, like bees, don't defend themselves by biting; they sting.

Still, a scorpion sting is not going to be pleasant.

In case anyone wanted to know....

6th most deadly scorpion in the world:

Striped Bark Scorpions
Scientific Name: Centruroides vittatus

Habitat: C. vittatus is distributed throughout the South-Central U.S. states and throughout northern Mexico. Beginning in the northern Mexico Border States, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas, C. vittatus’ range extends upward longitudinally through Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, to reach as far north as Thayer County, Nebraska.

Descriptive Info: The striped bark scorpion is an extremely common scorpion found throughout the midsection of the U.S. and northern Mexico. It is the most frequently encountered scorpion in the U.S.

It's a medium-sized scorpion that is rarely longer than 2 3/4 in. The striped bark scorpion is a pale-yellow scorpion that can be identified by two dark stripes on its carapace, with a dark triangle above the ocular tubercle. Their color suits their environment well. It provides them with a natural camouflage from predators, as well as prey.

So Ryan and I are camping outside of Las Vegas and it is the first time ever I have been desert camping, but he is an expect, did it several times in College, etc. So I am sitting on a rock at the campsite and I ask him if I should be worried about scorpions.....NO he says and at that very moment, A SCORPION JUMPS ON ME...it totally landed on my leg and I jumped up like a crazy person and I never trust anything Ryan says to this day.....(I did not get stung)

Sounds pretty wussy to me! If it was the 1st or 2nd most deadly scorpion in the world, I might be more concerned, but the 6th? Bah!

A SCORPION JUMPS ON ME...

And I remind her how lucky she was to actually see one--how unusual it is to see them in the wild like that! But no, she's still mad. You'd think I threw it on her the way she reacted! *shaking head*

It probably wasn't even in the top 5 of most deadly scorpions in the world!

Nah, take one of these with you next time you’re desert camping, you'll see plenty.

In my whole life I had never seen a scorpion in the wild until last summer at Uvas Canyon County Park in Morgan Hill, CA (it was inside a letterbox I found while hiking). I had no idea we even had scorpions in the Bay Area. Fast forward one year later and I’m camping at Uvas again. This time I found a scorpion about 2 feet away from my tent. We scooped it up with a shovel and tossed it away from the campsite. Needless to say, our shoes came inside the tent for the rest of the trip. 😬🦂

Did you ink it up and stamp it in your book? After all, it was in the letterbox.

Well, technically, as an AQ webmaster, I might just have been instrumental in keeping the site running, and I have access to Ryan's account for message posting. So, you don't REALLY know that... Just saying.

There's no candle next to my name, so I'll confirm that I am still alive.

I'll also point out for anyone who is interested... you can lose a lot of weight very quickly if you hike 15-20 miles per day and don't eat anything. =) Not that I recommend it, but it's definitely possible. *nodding*

Despite what wassa suggested, I was sure you were (are) alive. My real concern is that giardiasis can have lasting effects if not treated promptly and thoroughly.

As you know, I'm a student of history. Dysentery is caused by giardia and epidemics occurred anytime there were lots of people and sanitation was poor. People were known to have relapses or just a weakened constitution... and I googled it to make sure it wasn't historical hearsay.
