I planted in a hole at the bottom of a small tree at the edge of a cemetery. I had a strong wire attached to the box so it held the box up inside of the tree. The wire, even though it was black, must have been too visible because it kept disappearing. I had re-carved and re-planted once, but didn't want to carve it for a third time so I gave up. I had permission to plant in this City owned cemetary, but I don't think the grounds crew was ever told. I suspect they are the ones who kept removing it.
I've had a bonus box disappear too. When I replanted, I made sure to include instructions to leave it there! It was weird, because they left the clue in the initial box, but kept the bonus box (or it was muggled, you never know!)

The trick is to make the clue so mind-numbingly impossible that no one will ever notice it went missing. Saves you on the blizzard of hate mails that say you did this wrong and you did that wrong even tho you did all the work for the community at large's amusement.
More practically, the cardinal rule is "zero chance of accidental discovery". What that means, at least to me, is under a rock about 10-20 feet off trail. Find a moderate sized rock, pull it up, dig out a boxed sized cavity below it, disperse the dirt, put down the box, put the rock back exactly as it was.
DO NOT EAT before planting or finding letterboxes. Animals are smarter than you, and off goes the box when they think it smells like trail mix or a PBJ sandwich.
OK, some locations don't have rocks, and even for those that do, this suggestion represents an ideal scenario as opposed to where the clue says the box should be (you do write the clue beforehand, I hope :)). You get the gist. Don't hide it under a pile of sticks or a rotted log. We've all done it, and we all know it doesn't work. If not practical, take the principle of my suggestion. Good luck.

Neither did I! :D But I was able to get the box out by removing the lid - one-handed - and then squeezing the lid, the box, the contents out one by one. Definitely a lesson learned!
I need some carvers!!

I just had to tell someone...

I started letterboxing in late 2016, but I REALLY started letterboxing several months ago. Since that time, I've gotten my first tick (ever) and poison ivy (for the very first time). These are things I expected, but yesterday, something happened that I couldn't believe, and I just had to tell someone.
My letterboxing friend (Flutter Fairy) and I were "on the hunt" in a park that has informative signs along the path about Red-Tailed Hawks, Owls, Coyotes, Bobcats, etc. We had already passed several of these signs when the next letterbox clue read, "What do you have left to fear? Continue down the road until you encounter the Bobcat on your right." This clue was referring to a Bobcat SIGN, but as we looked up the path instantly after reading the clue, a Bobcat walked out onto the path (from the right, of course!). I took pictures of the Bobcat walking down the path towards us, with the clue in the foreground of the picture (because I didn't think anyone would believe us), and then another picture when the Bobcat was about 5 feet from us, but I don't know how to post them here. We did report back to the owner of the box that her clues were VERY LIFELIKE AND SPOT ON! Be careful out there!

I want to see those pics.
Go to Toolbox at the top of the AQ page and select photo gallery.
Click create photo album. Fill in the info. Select upload photos and there you are. Please make it a public album so I can see that bobcat.
If it'd been snake, you could have uploaded it here: https://www.atlasquest.com/gallery/viewalbum.html?gAlbumId=3467

And the rest of the story??? Clearly, it didn't attack and eat you and your friend . . . did it just walk on by? Did you make yourself large and make noise to scare it off? Anxious to hear the outcome of your encounter đł

Hey, I planted a box on a beach, and it was found on an island in the Gulf of Mexico. I had tied it down with string, but string doesn't hold up well.

I have cut at least two out of such trees. No, I didn't cut the tree down, I just widened the hole until the box could be retrieved.

I've come up with an idea for a stamp that I want to plant based on this idea. The names I came up with for it were the ones I gave, but I figured that this group of creative people could do better. Y'all did!
I haven't carved the stamp yet so the name is still up for improvement, if you can come up with something better than has already been given.
You'll have to see the stamp (when it is planted) to see the idea I came up with.

I had some clues telling me to look in the "serpent's den", but in front of the little cave was a real live copperhead, who then proceeded to go into the cave.

This is too much of a story and I just had to add on to it. After reading what happened to you, Huntress, I also had an similar occurrence. I know exactly how you felt because I am also sure that I found the exact same box in TX, lol. Here are the pics that I took while boxing I encounter this bobcat. I managed to return the box and grabbed my things. This happened almost 5 years ago. Cute kitty!

That Bobcat just kept walking toward me...and passed by about 4 ft from me! One of the joggers in the area said, âoh yeah, they are around...if you donât bother them, they wonât bother you!â But the bad part was that the box was missing!

Ok - I made the photo album, The Huntressâs Bobcatâ But I donât know how to put a link in this message. Note: the close up picture is not on Zoom, and it was taken with my iPhone. The other picture is just as the Bobcat walked out when we read the clue (added the highlighting later), but this wasnât a great picture...I was in a hurry and a little nervous!
