I think mounting foam under the material while you carve, would allow too much "give" as you use pressure with your tools.

That's the way I have always carved! In fact, recently I had to resort to carving before mounting for the first time because the Seed material is translucent and having it mounted on black foam makes it too difficult to see the image.

I'm amazed in my life how when I meet new people, not boxers, the subject of 'boxing comes into the conversation.

I don't have any brand preference and I don't have a machine but I prefer hand made journals. There are folks in this hobby and on Etsy that make them and are proud to make them. Sometimes you can get lucky and even get them personalized. My last source has stopped making journals so I need to find another source. This thread may well reveal a couple of those individuals.

If you want a nice one, I would go with handmade. Many boxers have bind it all machines and they spiral bound books are nice. Check out etsy!

I agree Kirbert. I find some issues with carving, especially on pink, are solved when you mount the material. The reduced flex of the material lets you adjust tinier details better than when it is unmounted.

The difference of opinions on this may be the result of tabletop carving vs. hand held carving. I am a handheld carver so when I mount it, it has less give. When a tabletop carver mounts on foam and puts it on a table it has more give that the table alone would have.

I make my own:
1. Get an old hardcover book (thrift store or library sale). Look for one with a cover that appeals to you.
2. Using an XActo knife, I cut off the spine
3. I use ink jet paper to make "signatures"
4. I bind the book using a coptic stitch

My top reasons for loving my logbooks:
The book opens flat (coptic stitch is perfect)
old book covers are quirky.
ink jet paper accepts ink really well
these books are inexpensive
Mini versions of coptic-stitched books are perfect for letterbox logbooks, too!

That reminds me of a box Eidolon once brought to my attention in Vietnam or something and, when searching from Georgia, the box was allegedly located "due north" about 7000 miles or something. He didn't think that seemed correct and thought I should look into it.

I was finishing some LTCs that I'm mailing today. I goofed up on what I was writing on the back, but only on 4 of the cards. I decided to glue a piece of paper (of the same color) over the mistake and correct it. On smaller mistakes I've just written over it.

What do you do when the front of the LTC is okay, but you goof up on the back?

Same here on both comments. Most people aren't looking at the back, unless the rare occasion you are decorating the back also. But by the time I'm onto the back I've already spent so much time on the front that there's no way I am tossing it and starting over, or can't because I don't have anymore material/stamp might even be gone by then. Nobody is going to mind, and if they do that's their problem!

My sig stamp is in rough shape, so the backs of my cards are always a mess. I don't really care, though.

That's one of my realized fears. I was taught to put the back information on a piece of paper ~ often it is color coordinated to the front. I computer print a sheet or two of the back panel with title, etc., then sig. stamp them and set aside the ones I haven't messed up yet. Then, having got my steady hand going, I finish the fronts, and that usually involves some boo-boos, too. The last step is to stick the good back panels on the best cards, and then use as many of the messed up ones as I can stand to share, and pitch the rest. Finally, I number them based on the number of survivors, and usually keep the worst one as my copy. So how many do I make? I start with two sheets of 12 x 12 card stock, and it goes down from there.

I like to use sticky lables. I have goofy handwriting that is had to read and I know I would mess them up.

Idea for carving workshops: a webcam pointed at the carving area and projecting it onto a wall/screen - so we could see the technique without crowding around the carver...

I have a very high percentage of failures on the front, so I like your idea of papering over a mistake on the back.

As you can see, the back is not too important to anyone. I am happy if I can read an AQ number.

I like Strathmore's Mixed Media 300 Series 5.5 in by 8.5 inches.

I've tried a number of logbooks. I like this one because it is a good size to fit in my back pack, the paper is smooth and is a heavy enough weight I can stamp on both sides. 40 sheets seem to be a good number for me. It is spiral bound so it opens flat and also I can spin the front pages all the way around to stay open to the page I am working on. I like that it doesn't have easy tear perferations like some art books have.

I buy it at Michael's with a coupon, but even full price, $10 is not unreasonable. I see it is available at Dick Blick for $6.28.
