Well, after Monday, I want to be an umbraphile. My husband and I drove over 800 miles to get to South Carolina to see the eclipse. I woke at 4:30am on the 21st to check the latest weather, found out that our site was increasing it's chances of rain, and we got up and drove to places that had better outlooks for the weather at 2:40. At noon some clouds rolled in, we saw the first half of the eclipse with wispy clouds moving across the sun for two hours. It was lovely. At 2:20 the clouds stopped moving and we had clear skies for the next hour. Couldn't have been better. We are hooked and will probably go to Texas in 2024 even though totality will be within three hours of our CT home. The weather in April is not good, so I want better odds for clear skies and open expanse for my next viewing.
oh, and eclipse people are the most excited, welcoming, and friendly people I've ever met. Even a little nicer then deadheads in the 70's.
thanks for the glasses Ryan. I'm not blind, so they must have been up to code!

2/3 of that trail is hiking alongside highways. I think my brother would opt out, too.

We were staying in Salt Lake for a family reunion, and went up to Rexburg, ID to see the eclipse. It took the usual 3 1/2 hours on Sunday afternoon to get to Rexburg. Just like Ryan's blog post warned, people started leaving as soon as totality finished. We waited until it was all finished, then had a leisurely lunch, packed up, and spent nearly an hour on the BYU-Idaho campus and in the bookstore (because I started their pre-program, Pathway this week, and will be enrolling there next year as an online student, and wanted to at least have been on campus once before graduating), and then we went and joined the traffic line. It took 10 1/2 hours to get back to our motel in Salt Lake, including a half-hour food stop in Blackfoot.
But our Prius spent most of that time in electric mode, so it took almost no gas on that trip. :)
And the traffic was totality worth it!

Now looking for friends in Texas who will be in the path of totality in 2024...who won't mind three people willing to sleep on couches and floors for two nights...

You can camp out in my backyard. ;)
I think though, that i'm going to try to find some place closer to the center of totality, because it looks like it will be closer to four minutes there, as opposed to one minute at my house. Still have plenty of time to plan. :)

I just checked the path and I don't even need to leave town ... 100%! There's a school track just around the block where I suspect many will camp out.

Yes, I've done it again! I created another website! Because... well, I'm not sure exactly how many I have now, but I definitely know I needed another one. *nodding* =)
So, this evening.... I launched the latest and great website: Backcountry-Water.com!
I think it looks great! =)

Let us not go overboard with such effusively positive comments. They are likely to go to his head, and then we will end up with nightly "Next Big Updates". Besides, rumor has it that the REAL brains behind this site has an AQ number significantly higher than #1. I can't recall the exact delta... either 1991, or (more likely) 5.

Ryan, Have a great one!

Ryan,
Scorpions, ick, ick, ick. They give me the wim-wams. Love snakes, spiders are creepy, tarantulas are ok, scorpions are the worst. Personal opinion.

Your friend has some pretty terrible luck if they can give a first-hand account of being bitten by a scorpion and struck by lightning!

One time boxing on the Rock I scooped up a tiny salamander to move it so I could look for the box. Only it wasnt a salamander at all. It was a large (for GA) scorpion. It didnt bite me, so there's that.

Waxing pedantic: Scorpions, like bees, don't defend themselves by biting; they sting.
Still, a scorpion sting is not going to be pleasant.
