I'm pretty sure that if I tried that, I wouldn't even plan on it coming out looking like the original image. Rather, I'd just dive in with a miniaturized 1V and nip little slivers out wherever there's a light area among the hairdo without trying to fully clear out each one. Hence, I'd expect the hairdo to come out considerably darker than the original image, more black involved with tinier slivers of white accentuating the curls. I think it'd look great, it just wouldn't look like the original image.

While I've not seen it a lot I've found this happens in areas where there is something is famous and there are several carves of it.

After having just met Maude at the Homerdoodle event, I so wish I could have come to her event in Iowa. But a family wedding takes precedence. I'm so glad to hear the great reports celebrating the event.

That's pretty detailed. I haven't done that much detail but almost. When I'm attempting something like that I follow the advise above - magnifier, lamp, small tool. For me it helps to not think about the image as a whole, just slowly and patiently removing anything that's not the transfer.

I tend to be a bit more impressionistic in my carvings, and would do enough to give the IDEA of the very curly hair, as opposed to attempting major detail work on it. (but then, my carving is more like painting, to me, and each person's carving is very unique)

Other than that, settle in with some wine, youtube for entertainment, your magnifying lamp and get to work!

Hello Michigan!!

I am planning a trip to Whitefish Point. I was hoping for some ideas, input, etc on the area.
I'm interested in rock collecting on the beach and the bird observatory. Looking to spend a night or two in the area.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks in advance.

I have AT&T and had no cell phone coverage at Whitefish Point (unless you count ROGERS from Canada). If you have Clue Tracker, save all of the area letterboxes (LbNA & AQ) in advance so you'll have the clues. The museum there in Whitefish Point is expensive ($14/person?) but I've been told that it is worth it. We stayed in Newberry but there are places in Paradise.

Yeah I think I will have to go with that approach. I think this will be too hard to figure out.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Hi GypsyLadybug,

We drove around Lake Superior and spent some time in that area last summer. And we included rock collecting on our agenda. Here is a good website to give you a few hints:

http://www.superiortrails.com/agate-beaches-upper-peninsula.html

As far as accommodations, we were spontaneous for most nights of our trip and ended up at Curley's Paradise Motel. It had a beautiful view of the lake and worked well for us.

And don't count on cell phone service/wifi/internet. It's very spotty.

It's a wonderful area to explore. I'm glad you are heading there.

We stayed at Tahquamenon State Park...It was a few years back though.
we have verizon and had coverage, except for a few dirt roads. we found many letterboxes and a few mystery boxes as well. check out spring chicks plants! I can talk to Mike for specific ones.

We went to Whitefish point, vermillion, Shelldrake, Brimley,Grand Marais, and Munising.
It was very scenic. One of my most favorite letterboxes was in a beech forest, near 12 Mile Beach campground.

Norsegnome lives very close to there, we had a mini meet before! contact them if they don't see this post, they are wonderful! they have tons of letterboxes in the area and we kept busy going after many of them.

We went to the museum but didn't go in as we had little boys with hands that would touch everthing. the beach by the museum is great for rock collecting and beautiful views of the freighters on lake superior. I seem to remember a letterbox here as well.

We may or may not have a mystery box in the area...hope it is still there. hasn't been found in a while.

you can get good whitefish dip in the area and it's something I will look forward to when we go to the UP next week.

Have fun! it is so beautiful.

After you run your search, select the backpack icon.
you can add that list to an existing list or create a new one.
then you don't have to have wi-fi to look up.

My Edward scissorhands carve is similar. Not quite as curly, but close. It took me 9 hours to carve. Just go really slow, and i highly recommend using OZ cut instead of pink stuff to hold all those lines. If yiundo, you'll need a Staedtler miniaturized and regular Staedlter 1v, to be able to carve it. Carve extremely shallowly. Also I'm assuming you have a good image transfer technique, and not pencil.

Otherwise, pink stuff and the smallest gouge you can get. And I second the lighted magnifier. I use an OTT light with magnifiet. See if Knotty knitter dirtmonkey can make you a modified tip for a Speedball gouge.

If you need something to do, Tahquamanon Falls both the upper and lower are worth seeing as is the Pictured Rocks. They can only be experienced by boat. We took the boat ride and it was well worth the price. There are many quickly accessible boxes all around.

Ok. I'll go take a look, grab the troop number and see if I can locate the leader. Chances are, they probably hid it, gave a WOM clues and didn't know about listing it.

A little challenging, but not too bad, especially if you refuel at the restaurant before the return hike. Great scenery!

Another thing anyone visiting Paradise should do is eat a cheeseburger while you're there. :)

and be sure to take breaks and don't carve when you're tired. Nothing worse than blowing a critical line due to loss of focus.

Last summer I launched two HH'ers in New Milford CT. That fall, I was informed there was a brush fire at the park & my heart sunk! Turns out, both have been found this spring & the boxes I left them at survived the fire as well!

Now two HH'ers I have left in Knoxville may still be where I left them!

We have had the same situation here in RI. The Girl Scout box clues are generally distributed only within the Girl Scout community and most often aren't published. Contacting the Troop is a great idea, it could lead to the box's possible adoption and thereby lead to listing on AQ and lbna for more seekers to enjoy.
