Skyline Drive

Hello there Virginians :) I rarely post on message boards and it's also been awhile since we've been out boxing. My husband and I are taking a day trip tomorrow to drive the bottom half of Skyline Drive for our anniversary. We will be headed South from West Virginia on I-81/route 11 to Staunton (? the South end of the drive) to come back North on the road to about Harrisonburg/New Market/Luray (depending on our timing.) We did the top half two years ago. I've searched for some easy boxes along 81 for our trip down, but I was wondering if any of you might know of some boxes along Skyline drive or some that are not so close to the interstate. It will be cold, and I'm sure we aren't going to be up for long hikes, but I would love to get to some boxes that I won't have a chance to get to again! I can do some searches on here, but really didn't know what to put in to get the best results :) Just wondering if anyone has an ideas off the tops of their heads. Thanks so much!! While I'm at it, any cool sites to stop and see or places to eat would be great, too!

My soon-to-be eight year old son has decided on a boxing themed birthday this year! Most of the party is all set but we're stumped on cake ideas? Any thoughts?
WW2 Veterans - Honor Flight

Inexplicably, there was no national memorial for WW2 vets until 2004, almost 60 years after the war ended. By that time, most of the veterans were in their 80's or more. Dr. Earl Morse, from Springfield, Ohio realized that these veterans were unable to make the trip to Washington D.C. to visit the memorial honoring them. From this man's vision, the Honor Flight Network was created.

Honor Flight takes WW2 vets on a 1-day trip to Washington D.C. to visit their memorial. It is all FREE for the veterans - airfare, meals, snacks, T-shirt, etc. Each veteran has a trained guardian to accompany him/her, so they are never alone. Wheelchairs are provided for the trip as well. There are regional 'hubs' all over the United States from which these flights depart, typically March through November.

Last October, I served as my dad's guardian on his Honor Flight trip. I took a couple hundred pictures & put them in a book for him. A year later, he still looks at the book almost every day. And he still cries every time he talks about the trip, it just meant so much to him. The memorials we visited were great to see, but what really overwhelms him to this day is the response they received wherever they went. At the airport concourses, bus station, memorials, a restaurant - people lined up & applauded as the vets went by. People thanked them & hugged them. These humble vets who saved the world felt appreciated.

Out of 16 million WW2 vets, only 1 million are still alive, with an estimated 500-600 dying each day. As Honor Flight says, we are running out of time to honor these veterans. Many people do not know about this program. If you know a WW2 veteran, please tell their loved ones about the Honor Flight program before it is too late. It wil mean the world to them.

And if you see a vet, take a moment to thank them.

You could make a cake look like his logbook...I have even seen pans that are in the shape of an opened book. If you chose that option, you could decorate it like a logbook entry.

I want to thank those who pointed out my clues were confusing. The landmark bench in my clues is moveable. I never expected that! The clues are now revised.

Since boxing is all about finding what's hidden, I love doing those king cakes where something is dropped into the batter and whoever finds it gets a prize. But in this case, maybe whoever finds it get a special stamp that no one else does? That could be fun :)

Yes and I've seen some images online in which it appears that Leia is not pleased about that. :-)

Natural Chimneys in Mt. Solon, VA is pretty cool. It's not far from Harrisonburg. I planted a box there a couple of years ago but the only report I've had is that it's missing. The park is worth a side trip even if the box isn't there.

Unfortunately, I don't think so. It's really narrow and there are stairs - only one or two in a few spots, but still stairs.
