I upgraded my own pledge 25%. Amount has already been donated. I really really don't have a stamp to have carved nor do I plan to design one so may I suggest you accept my donation and carve that teeny tiny siggy for S and D? If she still wants you to do it, that is.

Let's go for $700 this week

During this week let's skip a couple of Starbucks or even a restaurant meal or a lunch with the coworkers and donate that money instead to help build this house. It only takes 7 people to donate $15 to get this goal. Or even easier, 20 people to donate $5 (the cost of only one Starbucks).
LB event as a local fundraiser

Hello fellow boxers. I work at the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina. At our shelter we pull 70% of our animals from high-kill facilities to give them a second chance and find them homes! 30% of our animals are owner surrenders for multiple reasons... some legit, some not so much:(

I am looking at doing a local fundraising event and thought I could do a letterboxing event! Our community hasn't caught onto the world of letterboxing so I could get a lot of muggles interested in lb, provide some great stamps for those boxers that live nearby and raise some money for our shelter.

Has anyone run an event like this that could give me any pointers? I was thinking the clues could be given to those that pay a small event fee. Again, this might be more muggle heavy, but we were ALL once a muggle before we discovered the fun of boxing. In fact, I'm still a huge rookie!

Any advice would be GREAT! Thanks!

As someone who donates regularly to our local, no-kill animal shelter, I would be inclined to help. I realize dollars are most desirable, but you might get more cooperation if you just had a box hidden and suggested donations. I donated blankets, recycled carpet squares, garden hoses and watering wands, and tons of empty prescription bottles, to name a few items.

If you have a website, make sure you list your ongoing needs for all types of donations and link that to your clue text. Some will gladly give you cash donations, but please don't restrict access to the letterbox for those who do not. A letterbox could be a great way to find friend-raisers. Maybe you'll see donations later once visitors see the good work you are doing. If visitors feel pressured to pay for clues, you will probably not get the desired result.

Good luck!

I like the suggestions! Of course money is what keeps us open, but I am all about education, volunteers and spreading word of what we do, too! The animals love treats as well:) Maybe I can finish off the event at an open house at the shelter and the last box is hidden within!

Keep the ideas coming. I LOVE IT!

P.S. To see what we do, visit www.HSECarolina.org or https://www.facebook.com/HSECarolina?ref=hl&ref_type=bookmark to follow us on facebook. THANKS!

May I also suggest some carves based on some of the photographed rescues? Maybe put happy stories of them making a good recovery/beating the odds and finding a wonderful home thanks to average folks.

I'd be happy to contribute a portrait stamp for the cause. I don't have money but we've donated blankets, beds, stainless steel bowls, treats, etc. in the past. It's great when you find smaller rescues that treat their animals very well and make sure the homes they go to are a perfect fit.

Due to a contract we have with Hill's Science Diet that gives us our food for free as long as we pay shipping (which gets pricey... ouch!), we cannot use any other food for our animals. It's actually the best for them and their bellies too so they aren't always switching brands. We are very lucky to be a part of that program:) Thanks for the suggestion.

I think a combination SHELTER fundraiser / Letterboxing event is a good idea.

I wouldn't necessarily make people PAY for clues .... or charge a COVER CHARGE per say .....
but there are other ways to make money for the rescue ..... combining it with letterboxing fun.
Perhaps you could ask people to carve FURRY FRIEND stamps ..... or send leftover stamps from Postals, LTC's, whatever ...... .. put letterboxes together and raffle them off, for people to take home to plant. Put them in gift bags labeled "Basset Hound Dog", "German Shepherd Dog", "White Angora cat", "PLUTO" "GARFIEND" , etc .
They could each include a Letterboxing tutorial ...... in case a MUGGLE ends up with it. It would be a nice way to introduce people to letterboxing and raise money at the same time, without being PUSHY about EITHER.

You could have a few table top boxes too, with clever dog or cat containers.

We have 15 concrete piers in the ground. Hubby leaves for work this evening so when he comes back we will start the work on the beams for the house and putting the ground floor insulation in so the wood floor wont be so cold in the morning.

We will continue to keep the fundraiser open. We are expecting the first balance to be deposited next Monday.

Thank you a all for your help!

Jerry worked some overtime today and said he would be working some more the next few days.

Yay!!! Extra for the house but not until the 27th and I said he is worried he wont have any for this time but he shouldn't worry he knows friends are sending some money. She looked at me and said those are some friends, I said they are some of our Letterboxing friends they wanted to help out and can't come in person so they chipped in and are sending us some money. I did not disclose the amount and I wont its none of their business.

I'm sure she will tell the evil one but believe me he is getting a bit of karma biting him in the a** right now. Cant find a buyer for their old house so they're going to live in his mil's backyard in a camping trailer(sound familiar to any of you who have kept up with our story).

Oldest will be 13, middle will be 12 and youngest will be 5 come October.

Much growing has gone on since the last time we were in NC, let alone the first time we came to NC

He has always been bitter toward his two older brothers
Always wished bad things on us and when they happened was happy about it.

Now that hubby's twin bought a nice mobile home a couple of years ago and is doing quite nicely, and we got the lot here from their parents and are building a house, things aren't going so well for them. Hmm wonder why?

Going Orange to cure MS

My family and I started a fund raiser Sept 25th for a month. We are trying to raise $1000.00 dollars for MS and in turn we will all dye our hair "orange". It took me about a year to convince my husband to join in the fun.

Well here we are 10 days till the end and we have only raised half of our goal. :( I really want to see him dye his hair! (secretly I think he wants to dye it too.)

So by chance if anyone would like to contribute I sure would appreciate it.
Thanks!

Good Luck!!!

Find Austin and Perry!

Hey everyone! I'm guessing a lot of you may have heard news reports about the two 14 year old boys from Jupiter, Florida who were lost at sea on Friday. There is a public Facebook group called "Find Austin and Perry" that I would like to ask you all to join, especially if you are on the east coast from Florida to Virginia. The family has been asking people to do everything from walking the beaches to look for signs of the boys or wreckage to asking boaters and general aviation pilots to search the waters. The search area is HUGE! Time is running very short at this point. Anybody could be the one to find these boys if they are still clinging to life. The Yeti cooler they had also had sodas in it AND it could be used to gather rain water which could help keep them alive. The boys are purported to be modern day Macgyver's too! It is possible that that could be catching fish and eating them raw to keep alive. One of the members of the Facebook group posted a story about boys who were rescued after 6 days who ate jellyfish raw to keep alive! This really hits home for me as Jupiter is the community I live near and Sharkboy is just one year younger than these boys. Joint the group and spread the word! Even if you don't have the means to look for the boys, somebody in your Facebook network might.

My good friend and fellow letterboxer since 2005 has had a lot of really bad luck in the past year due to an accident, being unable to work for a long period, and mounting medical bills. She has not been able to afford to keep her dog Tucker, who she misses very much. He is being cared for by a local dog owner and friend but she very much wants him back home with her.

Cyndi has asked me to post this link for the gofundme page set up by another friend of hers.

She is of course grateful for any and all good thoughts coming her way. And Tucker says "ruh, ruh!"

So that part of our lives did not change. As a change of pace, I did do a different sort of "giving back" by volunteering to tutor kids in reading at my local elementary school. And that was fun for me because I love reading.

Back in the Saddle Again: Hike-a-thon 2018
Well, I took last year off from Hike-a-thon and I have to say that I did miss it. Even though I did not raise money for the WTA Hike-a-thon in 2017, Ryan and I still did a lot of hiking and letterboxing. But I really did miss doing my part for Washington Trails. So I am back again this year to remind you that we do still need help in protecting our Parks and Trails in Washington State and making sure that they will still be here for the next generation. From now until the end of August, I will be raising money for the Washington Trails Association and I plan to spend August hiking all over the USA!

Visit my fund-raising page and make a donation. And if you have any suggestions on where I should hike this August, please let me know!!
