I'm just bumping this thread in case anyone who joined us lately hasn't seen it. Very soon now! :-)

<<We'll be supplying printed nametags for anyone that would like one at the gathering. I'll put anything you like on it as long as I can fit in in the space....just email me through AQ and I'll have it ready for you! I wanted to do something with the logo that is the theme for this gathering so decided to just print them. :-)

Deadline is March 5 so I'll have time to run them all. I don't mind doing one for each member of your family, even the children, if you'll supply the info!

Like the root ridden trails at Latta Plantation? My sis and I swore off that place last time we were there, because it felt like we were in a losing battle. Both times we have been, we had a less than 50% find rate. Then the EXACT DAY after we went last, 2 more boxes were planted.

My creation for the "Snowflake Bentley" ring just came home, and I've opened it up as a single since the logbook isn't full yet. THe tracker is up, so if you'd like some snow to come your way... now's your chance! ;-)

Quote I have found that I love doing stamps that average 3x3 inches. Is this too large for a traditional box and why?

Nooo! Large stamps are so very cool. The first time we found a big one, it was a portrait of a General Beauregard. He barely fit into the kids log books, but if it had been too big, we'd have stamped just part of it and still been thrilled.

It's your box and your stamp. It's all about you baby! We, our team that is, are there to learn a little something about you and your interests. If you love 'em big, then make 'em big!

Size counts huh~

Two of the stamps we found last fall were 3x5 inches... and they were incredible! They were in honor of a lost family member - their 2 yr old son - so the tribute was absolutely touching. We cried the whole time we stamped both images.

So I would say, if you can find a place to plant it, then carve the size that best conveys the image and/or message your box is intended. Because - all the boxes planted have some sort of personal meaning, and finding each one is finding a tiny piece of another LBers soul. Precious and perfect, every time!

Quote Does the size of the stamp in the traditional box really matter?

I love finding big stamps in the wild:) The only thing you might want to think about is stating in the clues the size of the stamp. I usually do okay, because my logbook is actually the clue printed on paper. But my boy's first log books were about 2 x 2 so when we came onto a big stamp it wouldn't fit. They now have blank index cards that I bind together.

Just my .02 cents:)

Do what works for you! People will adapt.

I have a relatively small, spiral logbook (4x6) and I have joked with my friends that they are not allowed to carve stamps any larger that that. However, I don't really expect them to comply with my request. So, I have added gate-fold pages to the back of my logbook, and am now prepared for any larger stamps I encounter on my letterboxing adventures.

A.C. Moore. In my store they were hanging on a hook rack near the regular post scrapbooks. 4 to a pack, but I forget the price. If you can't find them, ask someone for scrapbook extenders. Likely the posts and extenders will be right there together.

Oh, is that a craft store, or scrapbook store? I never heard of it. We have 2 scrapbook stores here, so I'm sure I 'll find them. How many do you use in a round logbook?
Thanks a lot!

Oh, come on, that Prairie Trail (leading to Hedwig) is my favorite trail! In fact, I have some plans for another box possibly on that trail that will be very difficult to resist... MUHAHAHAHA!

When I'm talking about uphill I'm talking about the loose rock vertical climb up the Uwharries -- yep, kids had confirmation that Mom lost her mind that day (wait until I take them back there for another crack at that box-- gotta wait until the days are longer, though...)!

I like carving larger stamps as well. Yes, you have hide them in bigger containers, but that usually means that your box is hitchhiker friendly too!

Oh, South Dakota. We spent a lot of time there as children and visit family once every two years. We too may be there this June.

Their is a small town, Box Elder that is about 15 miles east of Rapid outside Ellsworth AFB. Has some parks, could do a (Letter)Box Elder Bug.

But Rapid itself has the S.D. School of Mines and Tech. which has some trails, The Journy Musuem - Where the Spirit Lives, Rapid City Reptile Gardens, Dinosaur Park, Story book land, Bear Country, and several very interesting cemeteries. Not to mention the areas you will pass on the way to the boxes near Keystone.

I can give you more ideas, it depends on how far out you want to go.

On any hike in S.D. in Summer - no matter how long, bring water.

I didn't try the wet test, let me try it now.

Actually the only thing that happened was the instructor walking in the room while I was closing the marker container on the flip chart stand.

I was missing a purple. :)

I'll get back to you post haste on the water...

Good news and weird news.

The ink dosn't run nearly as much as crayola.

Here's the thing.

When I tested these markers, I did it with a new stamp, one I had neve inked up before. When I just inked up for the water test, I used my sig stamp, whih has been inked up a LOT of times with bright green ink.

The Sharpie flip chart markers seem to act like an emulsifier. It wets the old ink and the old ink will apply to the paper as well. If I use black that's no big deal. But the brown is a sort of hershey's milk chocolate color, and with the green ink from before, it sort of came out looking like baby poop.

Let me say that I carry marvys on the trail and while you do get some bleeding it's nothing like this. If you do decide to use these you'll probably have to make sure you clean the stamp super well.

hmm. This will take some more research.

Quote to turn pictures into stamps

I have Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0. I change whatever it is to grayscale, then adjust contrast and brightness. Under "filter" I use "despeckle" and then "stamp". It takes some messing around with to get it to look good. You don't usually get good results going straight to "stamp" from whatever picture you are using. Even a very simple thing will turn into just a blob.
