Traveling Hitchhiker Hostel?
Board: Event News and Planning

Thread Board (disabled)
Hi,

I posted this on the Yahoo Event Stamp board too.

I've created a hitchhiker hostel for our upcoming gathering. (The hostel is called Camp Granada Hitchhiker Hostel, the event is the No Foolin' Letterboxing Gathering on April 1st in San Jose, CA.)

Now, I've spent sufficient time in designing this little guy, and I know he'd never survive the wild. So, I was going to have it active only for the gathering.

Then I thought, why not let this hostel travel much like an event stamp? As long as the hitchhikers were replanted reasonably quickly, this would be a very efficient means to move hitchhikers en masse.

Has anyone tried this? Is this a profoundly BAD idea?

If this is not the dumbest idea on the planet, would anyone be interested in this traveling hostel? If so, how would I go about advertising.

So many questions this morning!

Thanks,
Renee

If it's not too bulky to send I think it's a great idea!!Especially if there is more than 1 hostel at an event;could mass swap the hotels...would be more exposure for the HHs. If you decide to try this we would like it for our 10/6 event in Ohio.Let us know......

I'll sign the box up for that date. Contact me offline with a mailing address so I can ship. Also, please remind me as the date approaches. I should ship about mid-Sept.

Thanks,
Renee

THANK YOU for the comments from everyone (both on this message board and directly via AQ mail).

This traveling hitchhiker hostel is now registered under Event Stamps and can be recruited for your next gathering. Just email me offline and I'll add it to the calendar.

Again, the name is Camp Granada Traveling Hitchhiker Hostel.

I think the box for the hostel will turn out pretty funny--I'm using the original game from the 1960's as the template. Again, I'll make sure it has at least one hitchhiker before it ships out.

This was a bit of a spur of the moment decision today to turn this traditional hostel into a traveling beast. I think it's going to work out to be alot of fun for folks, and as Mama Pheonix points out, it should be a good way to get our HH moving cross-country!

Cheers,
Renee

I can add you to the list for "Alphabet Soup." Its basically for kids... and they can be used as Cooties... as long as the whole pot of letters gets gathered up to go to the next event. And the only requirement is a copy of your event stamp for its log book.
Let me know if you're interested or not.

Okay... the pot is filling up with places to visit. These are the locations I have signed up so far. If you're interested in adding your event to the list, let me know. This is a 'cootie' travelling event stamp... there are two conditions, the pot needs to be stamped with your event stamp and all the letters need to return to the pot for the next gathering. So if the kids do 'cootie' folks... just make sure people return the letters back to the pot! Thanks!

I suspect there will be some recarving. :) I just had 10 little day only boxes for an event here and 4 of them ended up going home with someone!

Do you want my Rebels with Clues stamp? It's supposed to look like James Dean. ;) Really, though, it looks more like Eddie Munster. It's for anyone who's ever done anything "bad" while letterboxing. You just have to write your story in the log. You know, trespassing, being questioned by the cops, that kind of thing. ;)

Its not really a cootie box... more like a travelling event box. But since some will be attached to clothespins, I'm sure cooties will happen... so I'm in hopes that the event planner will let me know ASAP if a letter ends up missing so I can recarve it and send it to the next event... But this way kids can have 'event stamps' specifically designed for them. I'm anticipating that some will end up missing... so I will be recarving missing letters after each event.

Hmmm... I'm not going to worry about missing letters... they are easily replaced.

yup... recarving is anticipated... so I'm carving multiples of each letter as I go : )

Besides... its always easier to double a batch of soup to begin with : )

Quote I make these boxes especially for kids.

I just want to say kudos to Lock Wench for all her hard work. She always creates a kid friendly atmosphere at her gatherings, and puts a lot of thought and energy into making them welcome. Three cheers to her "kids only" boxes.

Because I read that the Salmon Falls event spot holds "up to 100" people...and there are already 100 people signed up.....

I would like to generously donate my lap as a seat for anyone who needs a place to rest. Because I'm generous like that. Any takers? *grin*

I have a feeling, though, that your lap will be playing musical chairs with so many folks wanting to sit in it!

gweny dittos that, last fall we found I think the *first* kids only box in Fabius and Gweny had broken her right wrist and couldn't write so I helped her log in, she thought LW would pull the page and made me explain why I had seen the box...this year at DSS she refused to bring me to the kids only boxes and instead insisted on the log so she could stamp in LOL THANKS LW for everything you have done for my 2 little ones (not so little, but little enough) and everyone elses too!

This will be the first time I will meet BOTH Lock Wench and Mainekokopellian!

And since your event falls on the same day as my son's confirmation, I am DELIGHTED that you are going to this event so that I get to meet YOU too!

Counting the days ....

There's room for more than 100...it's a huge open space on the first floor of the mill. And as long as everyone brings a chair, there will be seats for everyone! LOL

Alright already you people! I'm so stressed out now I could just puke. I never thought this gathering would be this big! Just some locals meeting. I look forward to meeting everyone. I'll be easily recognizable. I'll be the stressed out looking crazy chick hiding in a corner twitching! LOL Probably muttering something about needing more carving material!

Seriously...you experienced hosts...how DO you do it so seemingly calmly?!

D5 Mama asks:

It's easy.

Find a place.
Announce a time and date.
Put the event stamp and logbook on the table.
Open the door.

We all take over from here. Sit back and watch a party unfold before your very eyes.

Really.
