Is the Clooney Couch for making out with George when he comes into the shop to profess his undying devotion, or for fainting on when he is spotted?

Just needed to clarify this in my muddled mind...

We had planned on going to Fripp Island for vacation this year, and I was excited cuz I thought it was close to Charleston......it's not!

Sooo...we have decided to look closer to Charleston, just not IN Charleston ( as of yet! ), and I was wondering if anyone has been to Folly Beach, Kiawah Island, etc.

How is it?
Is it good for relaxing, golf, kids?
Which do you prefer?
What are some neat things to do on the Islands?

I'm going to Google them right now, but I thought it would be nice to actually have some input from someone who's BEEN there, not just reading the web pages!

Thanks!

We've been going to Kiawah for 20 years. We'll be there in August again this year, celebrating my 40th birthday and my dad's 65th.

It's good for relaxing, walking & bike riding. I don't golf, so can't comment on that (although they certainly tout their golf courses). The beach is great. There are some decent nature programs and family activities. It doesn't have much in the way of touristy things, but my kids love just being at the beach and playing in the water and sand, so that's really all they want to do. Now that they've built a grocery store on the island, the furthest we roam is generally to the farmer's market just off the island.

We've been to Kiawah Island twice! Loved it! We went once BK (before kids) and once when my daughter was 3.....so that's 8 years ago. I heard that it was affected by one of the hurricanes but I'm sure they've rebuilt by now. We stayed at the Kiawah Island Resort both times. Very nice place. Pools, restaurants, tennis courts--those are my best memories. If I were there more recently, I'd give more specific details but I'm very fuzzy on those. I just wanted to tell you that we did enjoy both our visits there. Oh--I would warn that I remember it being very mosquito-filled in the summertime. It wasn't bad everywhere, but near this one pool in particular that was surrounded by trees we only swam there once and never went back.

We stayed with a friend who lived on James Island last summer. We spent a lot of time at Folly Beach. Lots of big shark's teeth! It was a very nice, family friendly place. Easy access to Charleston. We did some letterboxing while there.
My friend has since moved, but I would pay to rent a beach house on Folly next time we went to Charleston.

My sister-in-law has raved about Kiawah, also. I've never been, but it sounds great.
I think mosquitos are pretty bad everywhere down there. My friend said they couldn't be out for long in the summer/evening because they were so bad.

We are headed for Charleston in April for a couple of days of boxing on our way to St. Augustine. When are you planning to go there? Do we need to be on the lookout for stalkers again?

I've been going to Kiawah for over 25 years and wouldn't trade it for the world. I started going as a kid and now we take our son there. The Kiawah Island Inn closed and was replaced by The Sanctuary (AAA five star) which is gorgeous, but I've only dined not stayed there. In addition to the hotel, there are many condos, villas and homes for rent both through local rental companies and places like vrbo.com. Bring or rent bicycles as there are miles of paved bike paths as well as a very wide beach at low tide. Because of the resort there are tons of things to do, both organized and not; there are also regular things going on at Freshfields Village (free concerts, movies, farmer's market, etc) right off the island (just don't ride your bike there - until they get a bike lane/path bikes are prohibited due to safety on KI Parkway). There's a great LB nearby, too. Feel free to email me if you'd like any other info on Kiawah or the surrounding area at DSGMI at aol dot com.

I woul recommend Edisto Island, but it's about 1.5 hrs. south of Charleston. Tons of shelling, plus a serpentatium. Relaxing and beautiful state park.

We have been to Patriot's Point to see the ships. My kids loved climbing around on them, but mine were a bit older than yours (at least than your boys are). We love Charleston, and there are loads of fun things for the kids there. Haven't been since we started letterboxing (so we are going in April), but we all love the city!

I have heard that the city is a great place to visit...and since neither KoTL04 or I have been there...we might have to stop and visit on our way back from Key West/ Disney this fall...provided I survive the "SURGE"...my daughter would really like this I believe, as she loves the Battleship NC and the WWII sub we toured in MI...decisions, decisions, decisions...Be Safe...BR1

Patriot's Point is definitely worth it! My 7 year old (at the time) had a blast. We found several boxes downtown and one on John's Island, but there are quite a few in the area. The aquarium is great and there are tons of things to do both in and around Charleston. We've been going for over 25 years and still haven't done everything! Oh, and the food is great! More wonderful restaurants than you can count.

Thank you to all! I really appreciate it!

It looks like it's leaning towards Folly Beach, though. My brother-in-law has a cousin that has a house there, so we might get it super cheap!

We will definately keep Kiawah in mind for a later trip, though!

I'm pretty sure it's Folly Beach (the locals can correct me if I'm wrong) that has this great little bar, sorta all wooden with some piers built out onto the atlantic. I really enjoyed that place, caught some great reggae bands there and drank too much red stripe.

If you're into that sort of thing, you should check it out. If I remember correctly it's called Folly's End or something like that. Weekdays it was pretty great, but weekends got sorta brought in the college types. (not downing eduation, just drunken frat feuds.)

We'll have the kids with us, so we might have to steer clear of that one....is it JUST a bar, or is it a reastaruant, too? The kids would love the music, but not if it's adult only!

Edisto Beach, SC is a WONDERFUL place to visit-no hotels, only rental properties, but a gREAt family beach, great for bicycling, good restaurants, and only 45 min from Charleston-
I highly recommend it!!!!
Have fun!

Oh yes, there is a state park there and great sea turtle observation possibilities-this is a "dark" beach so your odds of see turtles hatch or lay are much better!
There are some rental condos there as well.

We will be in the Conway/Myrtle Beach area this weekend for a business conference and Hard Rock event, but are definitely planning to spend <some> time somehow letterboxing! Any recommendations for the 'gotta get that one!' LBs in the MB area? Any locals want to meet for exchanges, PTs, etc Friday or Saturday?

OMGosh ya'll! I know nobody would "get" this like ya'll!
DH just bought a laser printer for work (works out of the home). So I just used it to transfer some images! IM IN HEAVAN!

I'm so much fun just transferring...not sure if I'll get to carving! ROFL!

Loving the rainy day today!
Lisa

PS on the dog saga. I'm thinking she will NOT be at the meeting (greenwood). I swear I"m not going to get this dog until April! :o( I still have a "home visit" and they wanted to come on the 10th... I'll be out of town on the 17th too....so who knows!

I'm suffering some serious printer envy here. All I've got is an inkjet so I get to play pencil transfer all the time.

Okay. I must be missing something here. I have a laser and still do the pencil thingy. Am I doing something wrong?? or is there an easier way to do things? What's the difference besides maybe the quality of the print?

YankeeChiK has an inkjet, and she does the transparency transfer and loves it. You might try it and see if you like it too.

With some laser toner it is possible to do an iron-on transfer to the carving medium. I'm not sure of the specifics but I think I've seen the way to do this discussed on the Stamp Carving board.

Anyhoo, that's what I meant. If it works, it's much quicker than pencil transfer.

It's also possible to transfer the laser image with acetone but that's a bit too risky for my taste and not to be done indoors. :-)
