I definitely want to attend an event... and meet some of the wonderful people I've seen stamped in logbooks and talked to through atlasquest (plus many more!)... I'm hoping that my schedule will allow me to come to some!

and in this heat

It was hot for sure! But we had plenty of water and stamped most of our finds in the car with the air on (I know we cheated hehe). It was a great day to to go though... there was hardly anyone around.

Check out "Anniversary Series" in my plants in my logbook. We plant a new one every year, in the location we visit for our wedding anniversary. So far there are 3 in Maine and 1 in NH.

Our trail name--Waltzing Pigs--refers to guinea pigs, not regular pigs. When I googled our name, I was very surprised to find out that "waltzing guinea pigs" have been the object of scientific research. Apparently, waltzing guinea pigs have a genetic disorder which causes them to be deaf and to run in circles!

Nope. There is no name on the card at all, which really frustrates me. I always write my first name and my username on the cards (although now I have to remember to write Trekkie_Gal instead of kjnohr). I had someone send me a message yesterday saying that I had not written the ID number on the card (personally I think he just didn't see it above his address). He was able to contact me directly for the number instead of waiting for Postcrossing to find it because he could look up my username.

Unfortunately, even though I sent the ID number not 5 minutes he sent his message, he still hasn't registered the card....

Ok, I read the 'About Theme' section, but didn't see anything that tells me what in the heck the image is in the menu bars. At first glance I thought it was some sort of insect, but now I think it is a hunched person blowing a horn. I'd still love to know what it has to do with Arizona though. Ryan?

Looks like an Indian to me with some sort of instrument to shake in time with the drums as they dance around a circle. Have you never seen a stomp dance? Ahhh, as Wendy pointed out, the below was a clearer version, it seems, and true enough the character looks to be holding it to the mouth, so you are right, TG.....playing it, not shaking something....sorry...

Kokopelli is a fertility deity among the Hopi. He is also a trickster god and represents the spirit of music. He is a common figure in the Southwest and appears on the city's trash cans in Moab UT. I've seen many, many stamps carved in his image in southern UT and elsewhere. I don't recall seeing him in Star Trek though.

When I tell muggles (in this case, people who've never read Harry Potter) what my trail name is, I get a lot of long, awkward pauses.....

Now I love Harry Potter, but I didn't associate your trail name with HP (until now). Context is everything. :)

I picked my name because I love alliteration, and I collect Russ troll dolls. It sounded cute to me, but then I realized that most people do not have such fondness for trolls.
The definitions I intended:
- toy popular in the 1960’s, a ‘troll’ is a cute little androgynous doll with fluffy, colored hair.
- anyone who lives "below the bridge" in Michigan. Contrast with yooper - people who live in the Upper Peninsula, or U.P.

The definitions most people are familiar with:
- one who posts a deliberately provocative message to a message board with the intention of causing disruption and argument.
- a creature of Scandinavian folklore, lives under bridges. They are stupid, large, brutish, hairy, long-nosed, and bug-eyed, and may also have multiple heads or horns. Trolls love to eat people, especially small children. The females of the species are generally kinder and more intelligent, but still fairly hideous.

I considered changing my trailname, but I had already built a little bit of an identity as TrailTroll. So I kept my name, and try to make it my mission to spread the positive image of trolls! That being said, if you want to change your name, we'll all catch on eventually. AQ does a nice job of reminding people who you used to be by listing your old name with your new one.

Today we launched the 'Search for the Key.' In order to find the key, you need to find the other 18 boxes in the series. As you find each box, RECORD THE CODE WRITTEN ON THE 2nd PAGE OF EACH BOX'S LOGBOOK. THESE CODES ARE CASE SENSITIVE, SO MAKE SURE YOU COPY THEM EXACTLY. EACH CODE HAS A NUMBER (1-18) AND THEN A 4 CHARACTER CODE. By DECIPHERING THE CODES, you should be able to find this box.

Clues for all of the boxes should be posted today, and they will be linked to the clue for the final box.

See http://www.atlasquest.com/boxes/clue/?gBoxId=172609

The Story:

At a recent event, the following was overheard spoken by Mayor Daley to Rahm Emanuel, ‘I wish you the best of luck, and I had hoped to give you the KEY I inherited from Eugene.’

While a small side note, it piqued the interest of several of the press corps. Could this be the fabled Key to the city? It was rumored to have been presented to Mayor Ogden by a local ‘civic’ group back in 1838. Although the actual key had never been seen, it is said to unlock all the mysteries of the city of Chicago and Lake Michigan. Its existence had been, long ago, dismissed as an urban legend, and even among the true believers, it was thought to have vanished decades ago. Did Mayor Daley actually once possess the key? Maybe, he was hazing the new guy and just perpetuating a known Chicago myth.

If you are as curious as I, you will need to search the region to find clues to help you find the whereabouts of the lost Key. Lucky for you, I’ve done a bit of homework, and I’ve uncovered some information that you will find helpful. In doing so, you might decipher the code that has kept the Key to the city hidden for nearly 200 years. You will have to visit some old haunts, past notable figures, and find a few relics of Chicago history. Now, a few of my leads are purely speculative, but a few of them are much more likely. So to complete this journey, you’ll have to visit each lead.

GOOD LUCK!
