Welcome to the Tarheel state. It is relatively safe for yankees to enter these days. Depending on how you arrive, I suggest you try to take in the outdoor drama of "The Lost Colony" on Manteo (MAN-tee-o) Island. It depicts the story of the first colony to settle in the new world only to disappear with onty the word "Croatan" found carved into a tree. They do a great job! Bring insect replent as the island is a bit marshy etc.
Also the Wright Brothers Memororial in Kill Devil Hills. It is almost mandatory to bring a small kite and pop it up on top of the hill at the memorial as a tribute. But see the exhibits and grounds first, just in case Ranger Rick frowns on that activity. Finally, Hatteres light house and how it was moved inland 1/2 mile - plus there are three other lights close by. Take your time as you drive down route 12 through Duck, Corolla etc. and stop at the various places with plaques that tell about the various pirate exploits and ship wrecks along the coast. If you are planning to take the inter island ferries, you will need reservations in advance. Enjoy yourself. The water is colder than you might expect. It is much warmer down the cast in Cherry Grove, SC and Myrtle Beach, SC. OH, yeah,,,, alswyas accent the first syllable as in HO-tel and MO-tel and YOU-all (plural is ALL-u-alls) that way it will take longer to catch on to the yankee accent!

Even though I was way off track on "Which way is North", it could certainly serve as a "sign -counter sign" authentication for fellow LBers. I have asked folks on the trail and none have responded "correctly" as of yet. However, it would seem that anyone that has read this board and related threads would respond with "Nort is UP!" So I will continue to try that and see what happens.
Just in case, anyone know where I can get a deal on bail money?

Hi there Lotus,

There are many places to explore in the outer banks. What particular area are you looking at visiting? I have lived on the east coast all my life.

One of the most fun things to do here is deep sea fishing. You can hop on a charter from most any island on the banks and the prices are pretty reasonable if you do your research.

Be wary of swimming in the ocean to far off the shore of many areas of the banks. We have very nasty rip tides.

The lighthouses are interesting. Be prepared to walk, none have elevators, in the heat and humidity up the stairs though if you want to go in one. Some are part of the national park service.

Nags head/kitty hawk are ok. Alot of walking again just to see a large monument, but hey, maybe you're into that. Same sentiments with Jockey's Ridge. Don't be afraid of hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They are usually way better than chain restaurants and much cheaper.

This aquarium is nice and a good break from the sun. Not very expensive either.

After flying to NY and actually acquiring a literary agent with a very reputable agency I had the unexpected happen. My agent wrote me an e-mail saying that he was no longer with the agency!!!
Now I expected to be rejected by agencies and I expected to get rejections from editors and publishers. I did not expect an agent to suddenly leave! He also did not join a new agency. He did leave a phone number and new e-mail address since I'm supposed to decide if I want to stay with him. The whole point was to be part of this literary agency (I really didn't care about who the agent was so much). *Sigh* I need to call him, but I really don't know what to do in this situation!

I'm leaving town on 7/4 for a week. Maybe I'll just pretend it didn't happen for one week more...

Amanda is correct, however, we here in the south tend to use it to mean both. Goodness I can create quite a little stir can't I.

Well, this is definitely OT as concerns letterboxing but I beg to differ on the spelling of y'all. As a contraction of "you all," the apostrophe replaces the "ou". The pronunciation is definitely "yawl"--the more drawn out the better. However, there is no plural of y'all because it is already plural.

If it is used in conversation with a single individual, that is merely because it is understood to refer to that person and others not necessarily present (e.g. "I hear you and your family are taking a vacation in Florida. How are y'all getting there? Drivin' or flyin'?") Can y'all tell that this point really gets to me??? ;-)

In Michigan, we used to say "you guys". Didn't matter what gender the folks in the group were, either. It was always, "Do you guys want your stuffing on top of or next to your turkey?" or "If you mess up the frosting on that cake you guys won't get to eat any."

Ha! I don't normally visit this board, but saw the subject and totally agree that the apostrophe should be between the y and a. However, most people I know write it ya'll, which drives me nuts.

In Miami and Cleveland (my childhood residences) the plural of you was "you guys" or "you people".

Since working with midwesterners for 16 years, I've tried to remove the y'all from my vocabulary and resort back to you guys since non-southern people always comment about the y'all. (I never did like "you people".) But, the y'all sneaks in occasionally anyway.
