Random Thanksgiving Restaurant Question (Wilmington area)
Board: State: Delaware

Hi Northern Delawarians -

We're driving from Boston to our home in Northern Virginia on Thanksgiving Day - we'd like to stop somewhere to have a restaurant Thanksgiving dinner. It's a long car ride, so we'll be casual - and don't want to spend the big bucks anyway. Please might you share some recommendations?

Thanks -

We are going to be in Cambridge, MD from the 22 nd through the 27th. Hoping to get somewhere near the ocean. Ocean City is having their big art festival that weekend so we might go further north. Will keep in touch- would love to meet letterboxers from another area!!

Alas, no - we were there in mid-July. Sought some of the old 'It's Just a Game' boxes, but mostly carved & planned for my Christmas gather...

There's a couple of new boxes out there, too - have fun!

Greetings everyone! My family and I have just recently been introduced to letterboxing. Needless to say we are hooked! We have found about 20 boxes in the Wilmington Delaware area. We are running out! Where should we venture to next?

Also a sort of random question...... when you are searching for clues, what clues do you consider "old". Is it realistic to get discouraged when you see that a box hasn't been found in over two years. I have only been sticking to boxes that have been found in '11 and '12. What do the expert letterboxers have to say? :o)

Well, I'm no expert, but here's my two cents:
First, check to be sure the status is still listed as "active". That is one indicator that the box may still be there. If the status is "unknown", you can still go after the box--just plan to look very creatively and don't be disappointed if it isn't there. If the status is "retired" or "unavailable", the box isn't there (in almost every case. There are rare exceptions to this.)

Second, check the reported finds. If there are a couple of attempts listed and no finds or maintenance recorded since the attempts were made, you can decide whether it's worth the hunt. Attempts by multiple boxers on different days can be a good indicator that the box is missing.

That being said, time since the last find is not necessarily an indicator of a box's presence or absence. I recently found a perfectly preserved box that hadn't been found in 3 years, and last April, I went after a box that had been planted the week before--and it was already gone!

Anyway, when in doubt, go look--but take into consideration all of the above info so you know more about what to expect.

Happy hunting!

I usually advise newer boxers to look for recently found boxes, because they will average out to be easier. However, it's more fun to find a box that hasn't been found in a long time...IF you find it. I find a lot of older boxes that haven't been found in a few years simply because I go for longer hikes and very few boxers apparently like to actually go hiking more than a mile or two. Unfortunately, you often can't tell by the logs if anyone has looked for it recently and not found it because most people don't log attempts, lest the planter be offended.

Lots of boxes just to the north in PA. Ridley Creek, French Creek and Tyler could keep you busy for a few years. Don't forget to check clues on LBNA. I for one love old boxes, just because there is no recorded logs doesn't mean they are not there. Even if they are missing there are some great clues and hikes to be had. Getting to right spot after solving a particularly hard clue can be it's own reward. As for old boxes found one awhile ago that was over 10 years old. I have been searching for one particular box for over 8 years now, still haven't given up on it.

Hm, I believe I owe you some email, must rectify that...

If you're branching out of Wilmington, of course you want to think about Newark... don't forget to check both AQ & LbNA, sometimes there are planters who only list on the latter. Chester & Delaware counties in PA are very close by, lotta good stuff there. Don't forget to look at mystery boxes--you may not understand them right away, but at some point you'll look at a clue for a second (or third, etc) time & it'll make sense.

As for how long ago the last finds were--well, let's face it, it's Delaware. Not, for some reason, a tourist destination :) At least not this area. So once the "usual suspects" all find a box, it may not get any traffic for years. Doesn't necessarily mean it's not there, though.

I used to live in a letterbox rich area where most recent finds were a good indication of wether or not the box was still there. Now I live in an area where not a lot of boxes have been planted in the last few years, however most of them are still alive and well! I guess it really depends on the area you are looking in. At any rate going hunting for a box is lots of fun, even if sometimes all you have to show for it are some scratches on your arms and a familiarity of the vegetation in any given area! :)

Enjoy and welcome to the letterboxing world!
Practically Perfect :)

Hello all,
My son and I are planning a week vacation next year. I try to do a different state each year with him, and next year we are planning a Delware/New Jersey trip. Can anyone offer some suggestions on where and/or what we should do? We will be camping.

Thank you,
Cedar
