Actually I meant to ask for further clarification on Postal RINGS. With those, if 10 people sign up does that mean that 10 stamps will be mailed around to everyone?

First study:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16669698
The authors state "This observation supports the assertion that, once deer abundance exceeds a low threshold value, further increases in deer density have little if any effect on nymphal densities." Exactly. In nature, effects are often not linear. There are "threshold effects", beyond which some phenomena kicks in. The Mumford study showed a dramatic effect at 10 deer per square mile, which is also the typical carrying capacity of the land (at populations greater than 10, the vegetation and other animals are negatively impacted). So the threshold would seem to be 10 or higher.

The authors of this study also state, "When deer are eliminated from some habitats by hunting or fencing, the abundance of ticks typically is strongly reduced." I cannot find anything in the study where they state what the deer population was in their study, which is very poor form. They should be reporting that information so it can be understood and duplicated. If the lowest density they studied was 25 deer per square mile, they cannot make any statement about deer population vs ticks at densities lower than that (and indeed have not).

The second study only went for three years, which is far too short, and they reduced the deer gradually each year. They noted increased questing ticks the second year. Yes, that happens predictably the second year because they can't find their host deer. The numbers of questing ticks don't begin to fall until the third year.

Certain invasive species like Barberry increase infected ticks. There is a strong correlation between these invasive species and deer populations. Deer eradicate the native plants, but cannot eat Barberry, so it spreads. I letterbox in regions with very high deer populations and others with moderate deer populations and there is a profound difference, which much more barberry in the overbrowsed areas (and pretty much nothing else growing).

So, are there any studies that show that if you reduce deer down to 10 per square mile (not 20 or 30), the Lyme Rate does NOT go down dramatically over the next several years?

I'm doing my first Postal Ring now. Basically, if 10 people are involved, each person makes a carve and log and mails thiers to the person they are assigned or below them, whoever the creator of the ring choses. So basically, in theory, you should get a new "box" every week, until yours is returned to you with the log full :) It's been about 1 1/2 weeks since my last box but I assume that that is due to boxes being held up by schedules and such. It's been interesting and I've already signed up for more. I'm enjoying it!

Awesome. I was guessing that's how it would have to work but wanted to double check. I only did my first (and second and third) carve last night so I didn't want to jump into something I can't handle just yet. Thanks!

a lot of times you can find postal singles too. That is how I started out. With those, it is only the person creating the tracker that is sending something out. Everyone else waits for it to get to them and then sends it to the next person.

If have not already signed up for the Newbie Ring with Littlemonkey, I highly recommend it.

went yesterday to check on my box so kindly cared for by the local parks employee.
His directions to the new location were perfect. The new spot is great. The box itself, which did have a good-sized hole, had been patched with a full lining of duct-tape on the inside, more on the outside, and then camo-painted in green and brown. The lid (where I put my insert note) was fully intact so I just swapped out the box itself. Oh- and he wrote in the logbook- and for his "sig stamp" added a nice city of San Jose sticker.

This is so cool! This has got to be one of the best "feel good" letterboxing stories of all time!
Thanks for sharing.

John and I were thinking of doing this one since we figured the ring would have us carve a stamp. Thanks!!

Short and sweet . . .

I downloaded BoxFinder before our family vacation this summer. Next to saved searches (woohoo!), this is my favorite thing about going paperless while letterboxing:

When we are reading clues on the iTouch, we don't look suspicious or lost. We just look like we're texting or reading email. Of course, that doesn't explain the ink on our fingers . . .

Actually for Littlemonkey's Newbie rings, all the stamps/log books are provided. So you don't have to carve anything at all. This is unusual to these newbie rings. The purpose is to practice the logging and mailing part of it.

It is true that with regular rings, each participant is required to provide their own stamp/log book.

Very sad...I had a goose that was taken with her eggs by a female coon nursing babies. That was in late spring though...I am betting fox on your ducks. They have no problem coming out in the daylight when they have kits. Good luck! My .22 is loaded by the back door! Terrio

Just looking at the pic and the oak leaves around it I would guess a skull-shaped puffball. I guess you would have to open it to be sure of what it was. It looks overmature to me.

I also have a ? about one I found today...actually I wanted to tell about it so please forgive me hijacking your thread! I found some in a "fairy ring" and did a spore print...didnt help as it was white...but I pretty much determined that they were smooth Lepiota (Lepiota naucina) but the look alikes were deadly...did not feel like poisoning myself tonight so I dumped them...guess I will have to settle with the sulfur shelf I found this week...Terrio

I sure hope that all the boxes that are currently there are still there after the flooding!

The meteorologists are predicting that the river will rise 4 more feet. . I think the first two boxes will be safe. I did not see the last three so I am not sure about those.

I had a lot of problems in the Brecon Beacons, with most of the boxes I looked for being missing so that's reassuring about the lakes.

My sister went in for a routine hysterectomy on Tuesday and was supposed to go home Wednesday.

They nicked a blood vessel, she had internal bleeding, her pressure dropped way too low to be safe, and she ended up with a million tubes and 15 staples from a second surgery to save her life.

I went to the hospital and spent the evening with her tonight. She's doing much better, but it's not looking like she'll be good enough to go home even tomorrow (Friday).

Please pray that she heals quickly and that her cobra insurance will recognize why she was in the hospital for more than the original night and pays for this.

Also, that she gets to eat real food soon -- she wanted mashed potatoes tonight but was only allowed clear liquids.
