Hello, all you NaNoWriMos! I have created the 2006 NaNoWriMo Ring. This ring is for ANY 2006 NaNoWriMo participants (not just those who "won") - as long as you participated, and wrote SOMETHING in November, you're welcome! The PLBs will be something that relates to YOUR book. Also eligible are those who have written approximately 20,000 words or so during the month of November regarding thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail.

The one ADDITIONAL requirement for this ring is that you must share your work with us! Whether it be printed and included in your PLB, or a file on a CD in your PLB, or posted on the web somewhere we can access it... we want to read what you wrote!

This ring will start Jan 15, 2007... this gives us time to wrap up our works, and won't be right on the heels of the holidays.

Congratulations to all NaNoWriMos!!!!

We've got one more box to re-hunt, and then I think we will have checked for all of the BR area boxes at least once. To the best of our knowledge, there are only four of the original boxes left in BR.

Before you head this way, let us know, and we'll let you know the ones we think are missing.

Happy hunting --

A good point is made here. I was totally oblivious to this thread about having a teen board until someone brought it to my attention, and now there is one. *nodding*

I loved the ladybug story too. =)

Cooties were "invented" to keep the kids busy and happy at events. After all, children are too bright to sit around and burn daylight debating blue diamonds or PZ Cut versus the pink stuff. They are smart enough to shrug and just say "whatever."

It is because of this wisdom that I admire them so. And why I make so many kid friendly boxes and bring so many cooties to gatherings. I pass them off to CHILDREN and NEW PEOPLE who haven't experienced them yet, and people that I know are COOTIE MANIACS and people who have COOTIED ME TO DEATH IN THE PAST. I've carved almost 50 cooties, and using this formula, I have only had ONE person tell me that they don't want to bother with them, and I offered to take it back off his hands by sending him a self-addressed paid envelope to be rid of them. That's a pretty darn good ratio, in my book.

Of course, if one does not stay in the cootie-less zone, or wear something that does not say NO COOTIES PLEASE, or make their preference known, should not complain about children who are having fun nailing them with cooties. Frankly, once I told a certain sneaky cootie planter that I was done for the day, as I wanted to concentrate on getting some exchanges, he smiled and cheerfully said, "Ok!" It wasn't this huge deal or anything.

Therefore, I have decided that I will have stick-on badges at Desperately Seeking Sun. This way, anyone who nails someone wearing one of these will have to sit in the corner and miss some of the fun. I will set up a cootie-less zone so people can enjoy themselves away from the fervor of cootie-planting, and I will make a large bin available for anyone who gets inadvertently hit with a cootie they do not want, or think they can't replant at the end of the day. Drop it in the bin.....no questions asked. People who actually WANT to have a cootie can help themselves from this bin..no questions asked, as well. If you find some when you get home, contact me and I'll give you an address you can mail them to.

But the BEST thing to do is for parents to explain gently to children that there are cootie lovers...and cootie haters..and it's best to try to identify which a person is. I think it's easiest to be forward and upfront and just ask. "Do you play the cootie game?" If they say yes..just bide your time to slip one on them. If they say no, then control yourself and leave them alone.

And by the way, I will provide the NO COOTIES badges, but if you decide halfway through that you'd like to switch sides...no harm done. Just peel if off. If you decide you'd rather wear it as you're tired of being nailed, then you can put it back on, too.

That's as much as I can do, and I think that's more then most planners would agree to do. No complaints about cooties at SUN...as there are a lot of new people who want to play. And I will advertise this new policy all over the place. I think the "problem" at the CNY Mini Thanksgiving gathering was.....there was a wealth of new people at their first gathering, there was a high ratio of clever kids there, there were tons of cootie lovers, and there into our midst walked a non-cootie lover, but experienced boxer who had no idea what he was walking into when he showed up late. :)

PS "'I guess it depends on if you're in it for the "hunt" or the "kill. ' That is probably the best quote I have ever read describing the two main camps among letterboxers. Bravo."

So does that mean that letterboxers with a lot of finds are in for the kill? Being that I'm the person on atlasquest with the most logged finds, I don't feel as though I'm in for the kill. Maybe that's how people see me, but I've been boxing for over four years. I'm single, have lots of letterboxing friends, and live in a target rich environment. Does that make me a "killer" letterboxer? However, I'm sure that everyone here could name the only letterboxer in for the kill......

yes yes please. we like long hikes.
the very first lbing i did was a slight hike with two non-lbers who love hiking, tehy throughly enjoyed it and would love to do it again. fl and myself also just went out to get cq's ctrl-alt-dlt boxes, quite a hike, we got lost on our way out (which made it more so- but we saw deer!)
in the end we loved it and were only complaining about how one of the boxes we had to take home because it was so wet (now in cq's possession)

so yes-please plant

I don't do much geocaching, but I can offer my opinion on using the GPS for driving...

We have a Garmin GPS V that I absolutely love in the car. You can also search for stuff like the nearest wal-mart, etc. which has been a real time-saver for us on road trips to new places. It has served us well and saved us from being completely lost a time or two. (Of course, just because you have a blip on the GPS doesn't mean the road is also visible on the GPS... )

We upgraded recently to a new model from garmin, a gps 60 I think? It has lots of bells and whistles, and it may be great for geocaching, but I don't know since I don't do much caching. But I really find myself pretty annoyed with it in the car most of the time. When you plug in an address it doesn't necessarily show you the shortest or most sensible driving route as the V did. And usually by the time it plays the little audible signal to turn, you are already supposed to be across three lanes of traffic to turn RIGHT NOW.

My mostly OT $.02...

Quote Oh, and as for the 24 box series, I like the idea...I'm more likely to do a long series if I know there'll be gratification in parts. I can't do long hikes for only one box. My mind and body go on strike. The Highlander was a postal worker for a while, so he can walk a much farther distance, but he has to have frequent sanity breaks, or he starts threatening wildlife with AK-47s and such...kind of embarrassing!

No no no.. You are reading too much into it. Or maybe you have a sensitive spot because someone has misunderstood your motivation in the past. Or maybe they're just jealous. *shrug*

Think about the boxers you have met. Can't you see some of them who are really competitive about it and in a rush rush rush to get as many as possible..and don't really care about the history or other research the planter did, or could care less about the view? Or do you know some boxers who are really about the whole experience and enjoy the hunt? Of course you do. And I suspect you are in the second camp, judging by your reaction, but I wouldn' t know for sure because I have never boxed with you.

Quote However, I'm sure that everyone here could name the only letterboxer in for the kill......

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and not suspect you were actually TRYING to make a snarky personal attack about someone here.

Quote "Neither trash, nor geocache!"
I need another line or two to make this an official poem...

depends on how you pronounce it I guess...I have heard it as cash and as cash-shay.
so if it's cash-shay

"Neither trash, nor geocache.
Please rehide well, I say"

or

"Neither trash, nor geocache.
Please rehide well, this fine day"

or

"Neither trash, nor geocache.
can keep letterboxers away"

if it pronounced as cash...

"Neither trash, nor geocache.
Rehide well or we get brash"

or

"Neither garbage, nor geocache.
Do not toss in the trash"
