Totally bummed. I was right in downtown Philly for the ComedySportz/World Comedy League Tournament and could've gotten a TON of these. Instead, I took my friends to hunt for the closest LB I could find, which turned out to not be there. :-( It was the only free moment we had, so I ended up with nothing...no boxes OR park stamps.

Read this message at work today and thought I'd share it. Pass the word!
What do Shenandoah National Park, the Vanderbilt Mansion, and Harpers Ferry have in common? They are all part of the U.S. National Park system and you can visit them all for free on Veterans Day! In recognition of current and former service members, the National Park Service is waiving all entrance fees to national parks on Nov. 11, 2010. Almost 400 of America's national parks will be open, including Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, Cabrillo National Monument in California, and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. "I invite everyone to take advantage of this opportunity and savor places that our veterans have kept safe for us," said NPS Director Jon Jarvis. The national parks hold something for everyone -- hardcore hikers and campers and people who like to explore history, take a leisurely nature walk, or simply pack a picnic lunch and get away from it all. In the parks, visitors of all abilities and interests can enjoy a holiday, often without making more than a short trip from home. For more information, visit www.nps.gov.

Other programs?

I have now officially filled up the pages in my Northeast and Mid-Atlantic sections. :) Once I fill up the "additional cancellations" pages I will have to buy a second passport. :) I am such a dork about this, but I love it.
Does anyone know of any other programs similar to this one? Massachusetts has a state park passport you can download and print, or just the individual pages. I printed the pages for myself (there are 6, I think) and the booklet to assemble for my nephew. He's only four months old but it's never too early. It's for kids, but... I am 33 going on 11 sometimes. ;) Ohio has a whole activity/coloring book you can download and print and one page has a checklist of all their state parks. I pritned that page even though I can only check off one park there. ;)

i filled up my book too! working on book two~
there is a new civil war passport book by the park service to get stamps at national parks that are relavent to the civil war. Also, PA has a passport book for the state parks and forrests, but you need to order the passport book online. Have fun!

There's a lighthouse passport book you can order. (Or purchase at some lighthouses.) When you fill it, you can earn patches. :-)

I have found that now since I letterbox its simpler just to stamp it right into my AQ logbook. Then I have the pages around the stamps I found nearby!
But then I am old. : ) and don't want to carry a bunch of things.

I just got my national park passport in October while in the Smokey Mountains.
I had lots of fun getting some stamps and letterboxes.
I wish I knew of the passports books years ago, I want to go back to all the national parks we visited so I can get the stamps.

I've started keeping my National Park passport in my Letterboxing backpack. They are addictive - and besides stamps, they have those cool stickers ;-)

Almost bought them several times when the kids were younger just so we could prove to them they had been to those places.
I simply stamp into my logbook.

YES. West Virginia has the VIPP (Very Important Park Person) program. Each state park and forest has a stamp of the park name located usually located at the visitor center. They often are in little brown birdhouse shaped boxes attached to the visitor center so people can stamp even when the building is closed. Resort parks are located in hotel desk area.
If you collect specific set plus so many random ones you get a really comfortable jacket and membership as a VIPP.
Also has a hiking club for miles in state parks/forests which earn a hiking stick and stick shields.

Arizona has a Route 66 passport book program, which you can find at many sites along the "Mother Road". Also, Arizona has a state parks passport book program (if you can still find a passport book, they are scarce), but the stamps are still available at the state parks. Arkansas has a Civil War sites passport book program. California has an historic sites passport book program (and again, if you can still find a book to acquire), but most of the stamps for it are still available at the sites. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a very nice passport stamp program for their national wildlife refuges. They have published their own passport book; however I use my national parks passport book to stamp them in.
I have a website listing and illustrating the national parks passport stamps that I have collected:
http://nostalgia.esmartkid.com/passportstamps.html
Luckily, I started collecting the stamps in 1986 when the national parks passport stamp program was started by Eastern National Parks Association.
If you are serious about collecting many national parks passport stamps, I strongly urge you to purchase the larger "Explorer Edition" passport book. You can keep adding new pages to the book as you fill up regions (sections) of the book. I like taking a page out of the book and placing it on a flat surface when I am at a stamping station -- you can get a much better stamp impression.

I bought mine at gettysburg but I am sure you can get it at any civil war site.

Thanks. My mistake was looking for a Civil War passport book not a handbook with spaces for the cancellations. I'll have to get one and see how many Civil War sites I can visit next year.

My Pennsylvania passport arrived in today's mail! I am so excited, because even though I live in CT, I visit PA a couple of times each year to see my dad. I may have to start taking more creative routes in order to stop at some of these spots. ;)
Now I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my lighthouse passport!

Thank you for posting your blog! I was lucky enough to go on two leisure cross country road trips last year and was only able to find a stamping station at yellowstone.

Somehow I stumbled upon this web page for a cancelation collection in Spain.

Thought I'd share. Wasn't sure where to post, so I thought this was the best place.
Enjoy your trip to Spain! ;)

Found this: http://www.sameerhalai.com/blog/the-27-stamps-of-seattle-public-library-passport/
Looks like it has been discontinued, but the libraries might still have the stamp. Doesn't hurt to ask if you visit. :)
