Quote Yes, I don't see Redford and Newman cast all that well in it. Too old, perhaps?

I don't know.... Amanda made me watch The Sting and they didn't seem THAT old. Not really sure what they look like now, though. Hmmm...... How old are we talking about?

Old people on the trail would definitely be a different story that a couple of overweight middle-aged people, but I'm okay with that too. There's a lot of retired people who hit the trail so it doesn't seem very abnormal for a couple of old geezers to hit the trail. It wouldn't be the same story, though.

Quote Must have been the infamous Baltimore Jack.

Oh, don't even get me started.... I do not like that man, and even banned him from being in my adventures. I did cross paths with him a couple of times along the trail, but deliberately never mentioned him since the stories weren't even funny. At least you could laugh at the poor missionary tripping over his duffle bag (bless his annoying little soul) or the West Viginians selling their stove for a bag of tobacco (bless their annoying little souls too!), but oooh..... Don't even get me started on Baltimore Jack!

I suspect he might have tried to beat me up had I worn a T-shirt saying "I love Bill Bryson, and you should too!" *grin* That would been classic!

Hi! I'm new to the site and to Letterboxing - am looking forward to going out on my first "hunt" - but I am an avid scrapbooker, and I am already in my head planning a page to "talk" about this new hobby, and was thinking about creating a SB (versus a traditional logbook) of the finds! I'm glad to hear that others do this too. I'm surprised there isn't a Scrapbooking discussion going on under Hobbies, or more talk about other scrapping/stamping activities on the boards!

Scrapbooking seems like a good addition to the Hobby Box, so I've created one. =)

I'm not really sure how many scrapbookers are letterboxing. Back when I first started, I'm not sure there were any, but they've definitely started a "letterboxing invasion," but like any good invasion, they're keeping their battle plans hidden. ;o)

But seriously, I figure most of the scrapbooking talk is probably going on on scrapbooking websites rather than a letterboxing one. But hey, there might be some letterboxers that are looking into doing their own "scrapbooking invasion" and need a place to discuss their battle plans. =)

For lack of a better name, I called the new board "Scrapbooking." Kind of boring, I know, but I couldn't think of a snazzier name off the top of my head. I'm willing to take suggestions and modify the name of the board, though!

Happy trails!

I would have to agree with this. These two don't seem to fit my mind's image of what Bryson and Katz should be, in part because of their age, but also personality fit, especially Newman as Katz. Now if we were talking "Newman" from Seinfeld (Wayne Knight), that would be hilarious!

I'm thinking John Goodman for Katz and any number of people would have made a better Bryson -- somebody like Tom Hanks maybe would've been my pick.

I am looking forward to it though -- if nothing else, I am sure there will be some gorgeous scenery.

Thanks, Ryan, I am happy to see this one since I do scrapbook all of my boxes. I have fallen way behind in my real life scrapbooking but I am now in the habit of coming home from a hunt and printing the clues out on a page of the coordinated paper that I bought specifically for my scrapbook and then attaching the stamp to the page. I journal any stories that I had that day along with a listing of who I boxed with. Thank goodness I have a digital camera because I then just quickly add any pictures that are really good to the page (or pages). I found early on that even though the woods are absolutely beautiful, page after page of pictures of trees tends to get monotonous so I now only add pictures that feature something special.
Because I follow a basic template for all my pages, they are easy to do and I manage to keep up with everything. My true delights are the pages that deal with gatherings that I attend, there are a lot more pictures and stamps to apply and I do use my scrapbooking creativity just a tad bit more on those pages.

Hope to hear from others who pursue this hobby also,

Glad to hear there are other "scrappers" out there! I have been letterboxing since 2003 and have always scrapbooked my finds. I too have a policy of getting my finds into my scraplogbook the same day as I find them. The first year I did not have that policy and ended up spending a winter doing "catch-up". Scrapbooking is extra work but so worth it when I hear the wonderful comments made about my scraplogbooks :) I love making 3-D images with LB finds and embellishments.

I have never been a scrapbooker until I started letterboxing. I also journal, add photo's, stickers, cut outs etc.. to my stamp pages. Keeping them in a 3 ring binder. I have to keep my scrapbooking down to a minimum because I can easily see where it could get out of hand.

Right now I am gathering photo's to make our son a scrapbook of his life so far. He's graduating with his AA this Saturday and then heading on to another school for his BA. He's getting engaged this summer and I want to be able to give it to him and his fiancé prior to their wedding. Since it will be two years away I have plenty of time. That is unless letterboxing get's in the way! :~)

I have to laugh at that! My new grandson is only 11 weeks old today and I swore that I would start his life and keep current with it. Well, guess what.....I am way back on week 2 in scrapbooking. It doesn't help that I take tons of pictures every time I see him and that puts more pressure on me to get more scrapbooking done. It is one of those hobbies that you can never get caught up on. That is why I am so happy that doing my letterboxing pages is so routine and easy.

I just heard on the radio that some plastic pink flamingos where kidnapped from people's lawns and are being held for ransom by a bunch of hooligans for Snickers bars. And they're threatening that "pink heads will roll" if their demands aren't met!

I didn't catch where this happened, so DeeBee, please tell us that your flamingos are safe!

I hadn't heard about those particular flamingos, but I did have one stolen at Christmas. It was a cool, light-up one, and its head bobbed up and down. I had it set up so it looked like it was hanging a Christmas ornament on a light-up tree. It was so cute. Then some cretin took my bird! It's simply scandalous. These fiends will stop at nothing! Maybe we should organize a posse.

What a great gift!
I have a friend at work that made the most lovely scrapbook of her grandchildren. She started the day that her daughter announced she was pregnant. She took photos of them hugging her and wrote down her feelings. The photos of the birth and the growth of the children are beautifully documented. I'm sure that her daughter appreciates it since as a new mother there is just never enough time to put things in the baby books. I was very good about trying to keep up with the baby books but by the 3rd child I have noticed that his is noticeably thinner than the first. My children love these baby books. They can't get enough of reading about themselves. To document a life that is precious to you and show how much you value those memories is just the greatest gift! I'm sure it is a wedding present they will really cherish!

Back from our trip!

Well, we're back from our trip, and we had a wonderful time! We went to Jekyll Island, Savannah and Tybee Island. Of course, we had a few minor detours along the way for our letterboxing adventures! We attempted 9 letterboxes, and found 7. Amongst our finds (I can't tell all the ones we found) were:
- Peach Water Tower
- Ondbay Ampsway (2 boxes)
- Beware the Fish, Hawks and Fish Hawks!
- Beware the End! ,
all of which are in pretty good repair.

We attempted and were unable to find:
- Flutterby 475 (we couldn't get it because the place was packed, and I mean PACKED with people)
- Abandoned WW II Airstrip
- Georgia Peanut
Those last two I am pretty sure the boxes must be missing. We were particularly bummed to miss out on the "Abandoned" box, but I must say that that clue, and the "Peanut" clue both led us to fantastic places that we will definitely revisit. We wouldn't have found these spots if we hadn't been trying for the letterboxes, so even if we couldn't log the finds we were glad to have been there.

I suspect that we were first finders of "Beware the End!", but since it was a hybrid geocache/letterbox I am unsure. I'll ask the placer. It's a 6 mile hike roundtrip, so it's possible we were the first to do it! It was a nice walk, but if you are considering it, I'd recommend taking bikes instead. It would be easy to do. Oh, and go before it gets too hot in the day, wear lots of sunscreen and bring bug repellent! If you like to birdwatch (or boat or plane watch), bring binoculars too. We enjoyed it.

As a matter of fact, letterboxing on this trip has left us all with a very attractive sprinkling of bug bites all over ourselves! It seems no matter where we went, the mosquitoes and ticks found us. I am so glad it was windy when we went to Ondbay Ampsway, because otherwise the mosquitoes would have kept us from enjoying a very nice park! Bug spray was a vital ingredient on this trip, so if you try any of these boxes, definitely bring some! :)

Finally, I'd like to add that I'd never been to Jekyll Island before, and it was FANTASTIC. We LOVED it. We relaxed, rented bikes and rode around, walked the historic section, and generally enjoyed ourselves. If you get a chance to go, I highly recommend it. If you'd like a lovely place to stay, try the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. Normally we wouldn't be able to afford it, but I checked their website and they were offering rooms at 1/2 price on certain days. Apparently, they run specials regularly on their website, so it's worth a look. We also recommend the campground on Jekyll- less luxurious, but very pleasant and MUCH cheaper! :)

Hope everyone is doing well and has been able to enjoy some of this cooler, sunny weather!
Later,
KitCat

I can just imagine a posse of letterboxers hunting down a pat of flamingo filchers... when the filchers are apprehend by the 'boxers, their hands are sleeved in heavy-duty ziplock baggies, their feet are encased in super-size Rubbermaid containers, they're tied to trees with waterproof (or duck) tape, and are stamped superfluously with stamps carved specially for the occasion...

I was so excited with that old couple finally got kicked off. =) I was so tired of hearing them whining about every little task they had to do. And why, pray tell, why did they choose the physically demanding task instead of the "smart" one? This, after being quoted at the beginning of the show, saying something like "Now we have to start thinking smarter." *rolling eyes*

I'm tired of feeling sorry for those two.....

And speaking of the Amazing Race, the week before, Rob was so incredibily stupid asking the other teams "So did you get on the early flight?" It was FUNNY, but so incredibly stupid. He had absolutely nothing to gain with such a stunt and so much to lose.... They really got lucky they didn't come in last for that little stunt. I'll admit, I laughed at it, but it was so stupid!

I'm also kind of surprised at their decision to yield who they did. I wouldn't have wanted to waste it on the older couple--they'd be much easier to beat than any of the other teams so that's the kind of team you'd want to keep around until the very end.

But Ron and Kelly (was that their names?) were so much further ahead than the other two teams, it seemed like a waste. Yielding them just helped insure that Rob and Amber came in first THAT particular leg of the race, but it cut off the older couple who were less of a threat than the black couple who's names I'll never be able to spell. It seems to me that it would have been wiser to push the black couple into last place and get them kicked off so the rest of the race it would have been between Rob and Amber, the old couple, and Ron and Kelly--a much better alternative than a race between Rob and Amber, the black couple, and Ron and Kelly.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you--I'd rather see the older couple get kicked off just because they annoyed me. =) But from a competition point of view, it seemed like another bad decision on their part. Ron and Kelly are still in the race either way, but now they're pissed off at having been yielded and still in the race to cause problems later.

It is kind of interesting to see why people make some of the decisions that they do. When the black couple comes out and wins next week, I bet Rob and Amber will be regretting their decision to yield Ron and Kelly.

Fascinating....

But what about this?

That seems like a surprisingly large number of people with an irrational fear of flamingos. I hope that didn't turn anyone off from the gathering in Florida earlier this year!

I do hae to agree with you on the choice of teams to yield this week, however you also have to remember that they won a trip of something for coming in first. Granted they didn't need the extra hour to beat them to the finish line but how would they have known that ahead of time?

I have to admit that I never routed for Rob or Amber in Survivor but I am in this show. They may be sly and mean to the competition at times...heck it's a race for $1,000,000. However this couple has been so positive with each other throughout the entire race and it didn't matter if one person was screwing up, the other person was still supportive. I believe that their marriage WILL last after seeing them interact in this show!

Last fall, our neighbor "flamingoed" our lawn. One morning, I go out and find like 20 plastic flamingoes out on the lawn and busted out laughing! I did not tell Mrs. Lightnin Bug, but got a call at work about 1 hour later from the Mrs. asking if I saw the flamingoes. Our neighbor did it to celebrate the beginning of school and being liberated from her little gremlins for most of the day.
