I just saw it tonight. I liked it, but the book was much funnier (especially the audio version read by Adams himself). They did a pretty good job though.

Has anybody else been having problems with AQ today?

I went to my mail box, tried to answer a letter, clicked send, and got a page of gibberish.
The same thing happened when I sent a post to the "Postal letterboxing" message board.
I wouldn't be suprised if the same thing happens when I send this post

Ryan,
I think that the restriction may hamper the project. Very probably most folks that haven't become Premium Members yet may not know that their membership has certain benefits. BTW we will be sending you cash since we haven't seen our cancelled check come through.

Went to McGalliard Falls in Valdese today and I have got to tell you this was by far the hardest I've ever had to WORK to get a box in my VERY short Lbing life. ok, well it probably is no biggie for a fit 20 year old gal or guy but for a fat 38 year old it was WORK! LOL
But I will tell you, this was a REAL TREAT! Got some great photos.. Was awestruck at the beauty of this place.. not just the falls but the creeks, the woods, the whole nine yards!!

Managed to "obliterate" any foot prints leading up the slope by my rear end on they way down.... hahahah.

While Connecticut is the 48th largest state, according to land, (3rd smallest) in the country, Florida (where I live) is the 26th largest. In the number of letterboxes, CT ranks #1 and FL is #18. Now that may be a little amazing, possibly just interesting.

What's spectacular is the amount of boxes CT really has. According to Atlas Quest and Google, in CT there is 1 box for every 6.38 sq. mi. and 1 box for every 435.45 sq. mi. in FL! Seems those folks up there can't go outside without tripping over a box. I wish we were so lucky. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that there's a CT Resident Party at my house. Bring a covered dish and a letterbox.

As a sidenote, did you know if you Google a state name and "area," it gives you various areas? I love Google.

Yes, that is one way to look at it... I remember thinking the same thing when I first found out about letterboxing -- all those boxes in that little bitty state and the nearest box to me here in MI at the time was 90 miles away!

But it didn't take me long to change my perspective and realize that truly I was the lucky one having only 3 boxes within 200 miles of me. Oh, the planting opportunities that awaited me!

The stamp went out in the mail this morning, to your Orlando address. (Don't forget to feed him something when he gets there, he's an awfully skinny guy!) Happy boxing!

While trying to figure out (unsuccessfully I might add) how to make one link on a web page a different color from all the rest, I discovered that my website's home page displays weirdly on Safari. The webring navbar and counter are at the top of the page and not the bottom as they should be. It's driving me bonkers. Does anyone know WHY the thing would do it?...I mean other than it being a massive computer conspiracy to drive me insane? More importantly, can I insert some code that will make the navbar and counter stay put?

Thanks,

HOWEVER, as promised, we left a few items on Capr Breton Island. I will shortly be posting the clues for the boxes.

I can't help you on the navbar and counter, but I can help with the link colors as best I can. By default, unvisited links are blue and visited are purple. To change the links for a whole page, use this method:
<body link="green">

To change individual links, use this one:
< a href="URL_here"><font color="red">click here</font></ a>
(remove those spaces before the As)

I tested this using Firefox and Internet Explorer. If this doesn't do anything, Safari may have been set to override link colors (I think it might be possible). Exploring the options may guide you to such a setting, or perhaps someone else has some insight.

To make a specific link a certain color, use the style attribute. For instance:

< a href="http://www.atlasquest.com " style="color:red">Atlas Quest</a >

(I added some extra spaces to that so it would format properly on these message boards, so just ignore those.)

I'm not sure about the page displaying weirdly on Safari. It's hard for me to test possible fixes since I don't have access to a Safari browser. The HTML code looks awfully complicated (and therefore, more prone to error).

What I find fixes a lot of problems is if I can make my webpages validate correctly. You can do this at http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/

At least if it validates properly, you can point to the browser and say, "HA! It's all your stupid fault! Stupid programmers!" =) Your page isn't validating properly, so "technically" there are HTML errors in it.

If making it validate correctly isn't in the cards (I'm not sure how much control you have over your webpage), my next suggestion would be to take the problematic parts out of that large table and put it at the end of the HTML. I suspect that might have something to do with it, but it's pretty hard to be sure....

Good luck! =)

-- Ryan

PS. If it's any consolation, less than 5% of the hits on AQ are from a Safari browser, so the problem won't affect the VAST majority of people. =)

Thank you ShadowSpirit and Ryan for telling me how to do the specific link color. :-)

Quote The HTML code looks awfully complicated (and therefore, more prone to error).

Yeah, that's because computer D'oh people like me need programs that do all the work and let me play with the page by moving things around until I like it, just like it's real paper, photo's & stuff. :-)

I ran the page thru the validator (thanks :-) and it ran out of space before it got to the navbar & counter, I think because it doesn't recognize the commands (?) used by GoLive.

Quote If making it validate correctly isn't in the cards (I'm not sure how much control you have over your webpage), my next suggestion would be to take the problematic parts out of that large table and put it at the end of the HTML.

I probably would have more control if I understood code, but it's pretty much a lost cause. Picked up little bits & pieces, know how to insert code, know what some terms are.... The navbar & counter code are already at the very bottom of the page.

Entering clue URLs
Board: Atlas Quest Announcements
May 3, 2005 1:03pm
Thread Board
Just as an FYI, please, if you host clues elsewhere such as LbNA, do not type www.letterboxing.org as the URL for the clue. That's the website of the clue, not the page with the clue, and it can frustrate people to click on what the think is the clue then have to search the site to actually find the clue. Please link directly to the clue, which will be an uglier-looking URL such as www.letterboxing.org/BoxView.php?boxnum=60011&boxname=Thou_Shall_Laugh

(The part with &boxname=whatever actually seems to be optional in case you type it in by hand, so it doesn't really need to be included, but it doesn't hurt to include it either if you prefer to cut and paste instead.)

I found about 60 boxes listed on Atlas Quest this way (which is less than 1% of the boxes listed--which is good! Thanks!) and have fixed them, but it's a lot of effort on my part so I'd really appreciate it if you actually open the clue itself and copy that URL to Atlas Quest when including your box. It makes it much easier for people who want to find your boxes! =)

Thanks!

Rumor has it that Paul Newman and Robert Redford are planning to turn Bryson's A Walk In the Woods into a movie! Redford would play Bryson and Newman would play his good buddy, Katz.

Wow! That is truly amazing. And Julia Roberts, too!

I loved Bryson's book and thought that many of the observations were spot-on. I never quite understood why it generated so much controversy in the hiking community. I remember seeing and anti-Bill Bryson t-shirt at an ALDHA Gathering once.

If this movie really happens, it's bound to create a new level of popularity for the Appalachian Trail. The consequences could be dramatic, and not necessarily desirable.

I never saw the harm in Bryson's book either, though I know it's a sore subject for many thru-hikers. I saw a T-shirt that read "Bryson is a candy ass". Which is true, I suppose, but what's that have to do with anything? The book is still hilarious! =)

Quote If this movie really happens, it's bound to create a new level of popularity for the Appalachian Trail. The consequences could be dramatic, and not necessarily desirable.

Yep, I agree whole-heartedly with you on that count. The new level of popularity isn't a bad thing, necessarily, as all the trail magic I got would attest to. ;o) But a blockbuster movie could bring in far more people than the trail can handle. Possibily even something that might require permits--at least for the first part of the trail until all those out-of-shape-wanna-be-thru-hikers drop off and the trail can handle the new traffic. If I were the folks in charge of the trail near Springer Mountain, though, I'd definitely start considering ideas on how to handle the extra publicity.

But you know something? I have a secret desire to see Redford and Newman playing Bryson and Katz. Oh, that could be such a funny movie! =) Even though I know such a movie would likely change the personality of the trail forever.

Yes, I don't see Redford and Newman cast all that well in it. Too old, perhaps? I just can't see Newman with a bunch of 'extra baggage' on him.

Could prove to be an interesting film, though. Wonder if it would appeal to the masses, though?

I thought since were discussing books made into movies, that I'd share my thoughts on this one. Bear with me.

If anyone has read the HH series, you know how brilliantly mad Douglas Adams was. I don't feel that it came through in the movie. The problem, I think, is that the plot is so out there that they had to spend the whole movie getting the point across. That left little room for the funny bits. You got reminders of the funniest parts of the book, but it was like hearing all the punch lines to a comedy act without hearing the whole joke. You knew in the theater who had read the book because they were the only ones laughing.

Anyone who has read the book will want to see the movie, but I do highly recomend reading the book before seeing it. I also wanted to say that the audio version (unabridged and read by the author) is awsome.
