A Boxdn Welcome
Board: State: Louisiana

Thread Board
Just wanted to welcome everyone to LbLA. My trail name is Boxdn (Boxed In) after my families dairy farm brand and Ranch name. I learned about Lbing by accident while searching the web for trails in NC; back in Dec. 2000. I came along just in time to help the cause at the time of have at least one box in every state before the end of 2000. The original stamp for LA, Rails to Trails, is still alive and the first MS box has been replaced in the original area. As the ambassador to the Big Easy please drop me a note if you'll be in Nawlin's and we'll pass a good time, yeah.

I think there is an overall lack of quality hitchhikers.

I agree, although a recent exception is SpringChick's Haunted HH series. They are top shelf!

Other than than, most that I've found have been less than outstanding. It seem that HHs are mostly discarded stamp carving attempts or early efforts.

I did like Big Hair, just for the cheesy memories, so sometimes the theme is what makes it worthwhile too.

It seems you southeasterners have formed quite a tight-knit group and would like to preserve the 'southeast' flavor of the Yahoo Groups talk list. So, due to popular demand, you folks are getting the first 'regional' message group on Atlas Quest! =)

Alas, these message boards don't have all of the functionality you'll find on Yahoo Groups—most notably missing are polls and photos, though they are on my to-do list! For those of you who prefer receiving new messages as e-mail, that is one feature I do not intend to implement for a variety of reasons. The reasons, in case you're wondering, include e-mail limits with the hosting service, lack of reliability (running on a shared server, AQ's IP address is frequently tagged as a spammer and lots of messages end up bouncing—however, rest assured, I will never send you spam!), and the lack of control in taking back inappropriate messages once they're mailed.

It is my hope, however, that using well-designed message boards under one roof will eliminate the need for getting e-mail messages in the first place. It might take a bit of time to get used to the changes, but you'll become a pro at navigating these boards quickly and efficiently. That's my hope, at least. =)

Anyway, I've babbled on enough now.

Happy trails!

I have always called HH's the Lazy Man's Letterbox. No Clues,No Box, No Hiding, Just a Stamp and a Book.

And it's even worse when the stamp is store-bought!

Plus, there is the tendency of HH's to go missing. When I send out a HH, I want to hear about it's travels and there is a whole group of people out there that want to keep HH's a secret.

And even if you write all over the HH to notify you of its travels....people do not follow instructions! I have just found this out with the Great HH Race from Seattle to PA. Two of our HH contestants were picked up from Seattle and moved to Oregon and the people who picked them up did not follow the directions on the HH and notify the creator by email and neither did they notify the Yahool Groups Board! Even though it was written on the Log Book and on a seperate instructional sheet with the HH!

Looking forward to many great days of chattin' over here on AQ.

Thanks for setting this board up Ryan. I am from Birmingham and seem to be the only LB'er in my area. I have embarked on a quest to get a large number of boxes placed here in the near future to spur some LB activity in the area. I would love to hear from anyone else in the area that has an interest in letterboxing.

Actually, I didn't put the link in until late last night. =) I uploaded these message boards Halloween night, but to give the system a good kick on the wheels, I only told a small handful of people about it to give it a try. Everyone else didn't see any links or news about the message boards until I was pretty confident everything was working more-or-less as expected (which was last night).

So you weren't going blind--I was just hiding it from you. =)

Aloha, everybody! =)

Okay, I've had a couple of people e-mail me asking, "What the heck is a cootie?!"

So I've added it the letterbox glossary. To save you the trouble, it's basicly a small letterbox that you try to plant on other people without them knowing it. Slip it into a coat pocket or an open backpack. That sort of thing.

I may have also exaggerated a bit when I said it was the "growing rage", though at events in the Pacific Northwest, they are very popular--especially among the kids! Can't turn your back on them for a second without some cootie showing up somewhere. ;o)

So anyhow, I figured I'd put this board up for those who want to discuss all things cooties. Not really expecting too much at the moment, but if the concept really does become a 'growing rage', it'll be nice to have a board especially for cootie talk.

Wow! I had no idea you were such an old-timer in the hobby! =) There aren't too many people left who pre-date my entry into letterboxing, and I'm always surprised when I learn of someone only recently even though they've been doing it longer than I have.

Gosh, it must have been lonely in Louisiana all this time with so few other letterboxers. Looks like it's been picking up quite a bit in the last year or so, but still a long way off compared to other parts of the country. Hope things start picking up for you soon!

Yeah, change can be tough. It's very annoying having to relearn how everything works, but you won't be alone! Everyone else has to figure these boards out as well, and I'll be around to answer any questions or problems you have even if nobody else can. =)

Give yourself a week or two, though, and you'll be holding the hands of everyone else who starts to join up!

Wow Ryan thanks for the regional board. Anytime you want to come on over and sit on our porch and whittle some wood please feel welcome. We'll make you a tall glass of sweet tea and fix you up a good seat. Finally one stop shopping for all my letterboxing needs. Guess it's time to change those buisness cards I made to read AQ and not LbNA. I will always be true to my roots but really like the new pot I'm growing in now. Don't worry everyone I don't like change either but once we all get settled you'll find it's a really nice place.

Hello, it's me, Corazon, from near San Antonio, Texas.

I think I am the only active boxer in Wilson or Guadalupe county. However, I would be glad for someone to prove me wrong!

I have boxes ready to plant in Panna Maria (that one will be the first box in Karnes County), Seguin and somewhere in Bexar county, maybe it will happen this weekend.

Interests links?

ok Ryan - riddle me this, why does AQ automatically hyperlink the fields for interests and direct them to amazon.com? Do you have some affiliation with amazon? Can't I hyperlink my own interests if I want to something else that might oh say - be educational?

For example:

Favorite music: and I'd like to hyperlink to oh, say a webpage about Thelonious Monk or something....
or
Favorite place: Maine, and then I'd put a link to something about hiking in Baxter State Park.

I put that in in a moment of madness. In theory, if anyone ever followed one of those links and bought something from Amazon.com, I'd get a commission. It's only a theory, though, because nobody has ever bought anything following those links!

Never really expected much to come of it, and alas, I have been proven correct. So I'm thinking of just removing those links completely. In fact, the only reason I hadn't done it already was because it would take me about five minutes and I didn't want to waste the time. =) I figured it wasn't hurting anything!

Hmmm.... New idea! How about if I make links so it'll perform a Google search for the topic in question? So if, for instance, you include 'Thelonious Monk' as your favorite music, clicking on it would generate a Google search with those terms? I'm pretty sure I can make Google perform a search of those terms.

Can't be any worse than being stranded in, oh, Kansas, perhaps? ;o)

Wes: we tease because we love.... =) Not that I really think a Kansas boy will waste his time reading the Louisiana board!

But back to the subject at hand....I know there's a lot of people who like to keep letterboxing hush-hush, but have you considered trying to talk a local paper or two into writing an article about letterboxing? For those places not graced with hundreds of letterboxes, it's one way to take matters into your own hands! And if you've planted a good dozen or so in the area that the newspaper covers, hopefully it'll hook at least a handful of people and get some more action going.

If you hover your mouse cursor over the images for a second or so, popup text will tell you what that particular image means. For more details than you, click on the image.

Doah! I just tried clicking on the image myself and it didn't work. (Though the popup did!) Must have forgotten to turn the images into links.... I'll fix that tonight. If the links DID work, however, they'd take you to http://www.atlasquest.com/help/userattributes.html

Well, I can see if there was incentive to originally putting the amazon configuration in there. However, if it's not working - move on. I'd rather just list the things as interests with no hyperlink, or have control of the url that I hyperlink too.

A web-based search engine is only as good as what you type into it - ie: the user and I wouldn't trust anyone else but myself to deliver the information about my personal interests other than me, myself and I.
