Quote (find hiding spot) . . . moved up on the list for local plants, since you have the luxury of scoping things out. . . As a new planter I very often found that I'd come up with all of the other stuff on that list, only to be confounded by the fact that I had a box too large to plant in a really good hiding spot.

As a matter of record, I knew both the park and the exact spot where I wanted to plant that first box. I concur with preboxed, move #4 up to #2.

I live in the northern part of Louisiana, but recently letterboxed in MS, with my daughter, who is from Texas. Does anyone know if there is a Mississippi letterboxing patch available or not. We would be interested in them, if they are available.

Letterboxing newbie and I was pleasantly surprised to find so many boxes placed around my old hometown of H'burg. I'm going to be visiting family there in a couple of months. Anything special, off the regular list, I should look for in the area?

We always love the great places letterboxing takes us, so naturally while stopping in Hattiesburg on the way to the beach last year, we took off to find a few boxes. We were unable to locate "Longleaf Trace: English Oak" however, we found a couple on the SMU campus. Beautiful campus. This is actually where I introduced my neighbor to letterboxing & she has been hooked ever since. Now I have a great letterboxing cohort that enjoys the hobby as much as I do...we have some tales we could tell!! Welcome to the world of letterboxing & have fun in Hattiesburg.

Rats! As far as work is concerned, I can take off for the event. However, I would want to fly rather than drive and I just don't think I can get the dollars and cents to cooperate. Can I carve something for the event and take part in it vicariously?

I've noticed that the only people finding the Hattiesburg area boxws are people passing through the area. Except for me I think it has been over a year since a local has found a local box.

I have thought the same thing many times! I'm in MS frequently for visits with family, but I've found everything in the Vicksburg area. My last trip I started a series so I would have something to check on when I go back. ;]

I think it needs to be "born" before it can "die." Mississippi is just one of those places where letterboxing hasn't taken off (yet!) =)

I've been doing what I can to foster letterboxing in the Vicksburg area. Most of the finds on my boxes are people passing through on Interstate 20. Sooner or later the right combination of locals will become involved though. Remember, if you plant them, they will come!

It's too bad there aren't very many boxers in MS. I have a box there, (and several by another Texas boxer,) but no one from Vicksburg has ever found it. My grandkids who have boxed with me from the beginning now live there, so I do wish there were more boxes planted so i could box with them when I visit. Hopefully, one day it will be "born". If you pass through there please think about placing one, who knows suddenly one day, there will be a boxing frenzy!

I just think there are too many awesome old places to hide boxes in Mississippi to let it go to waste! I love all the ones in downtown Vicksburg, and really loved tromping around the Winsor Ruins even though we didn't find the box. As soon as people realize how cool the hiding spots can be I think LBing will really catch on there!! :]] In the mean time, I will definitely continue my "One Mississippi..." series!

Windsor was my first plant, so I am fond of it. It was very difficult to keep the box from going missing, so after a couple of failed attempts I retired it. Maybe you want to place one of your own boxes there?? (Be warned that there is a geocache at the site.)

Ever been to Rodney? Now that would be a place for a letterbox!

Jbanana and I went to Vicksburg just to letterbox. The boxes were great! So, if you haven't been there, Go!

I know what you mean about no locals. Only Mezzosoprana and I live here, but thanks to several boxers who live elsewhere, there are some great boxes in this areas. I just wish someone would come find them!

Might as well jump right in here, since everybody always seems to figure out my plans anyway. Just today SWMBO and I have tentatively decided on the Biloxi-to-Hattiesburg area for our Turkey Day trip. SWMBO, being a schoolteacher, gets Wed-Fri off that week, and she takes Mon-Tue as personal leave so we have a 9-day vacation. And all that explains why I have just signed up for this board.

Anyhow, wanted to know what's up with the above comment? Is this because the locals aren't hunting, or because they aren't planting so there's nothing left to hunt for them?

I am in need of a carver from Mississippi. I know, I know... I'm asking a lot. :) But I'm willing to be patient until one pops up! I am doing a series here in Utah this spring during Rocky Mountain Plant-A-Box month. It will be named, "Hello From the United States!", and I am getting carvers from all over the US to participate. The theme for the stamp would be, "Hello From Mississippi!", and would be of your own design of what you'd like Utah to know of your state.

In exchange, I will carve you a stamp of your choosing, any theme. :)

I've got a date of April 1, 2010 set, so it's not an immediate need. I just wanted to give people a heads up so they have time to prepare.

Tracker is at: http://www.atlasquest.com/showinfo.html?gTrackerId=3809

Thanks,

My dear wife, Cheshire Cat, is working in Northern Mississippi (Cleveland area) for the next 4-6 months, and we've only been able to find one (missing) letterbox nearby. Since she's "smack dab" in the middle of the home of the Delta Blues, we're considering a joint effort (I'll carve, she'll plant) to drop a few boxes in the area - hopefully bringing folks to some of the historic spots nearby. (Come on folks, we're talking the crossroads here!)

I'm thinking Charlie Patton, Muddy Waters, Willie Brown, Robert Johnson, Rev. Son House, etc...

Does anyone nearby know if there are boxes I didn't find (searched AQ & LbNA), so we don't step on anyone's parade?

Thanx!

I was checking out the boxes in Mississippi. You mentioned that you haven't had anyone find them recently. I tend to go to boxes where I can see the attempts; that way I know if it has not been found many times, just a few, or if it has always been found. If you would change the ability to see the boxes on your Mississippi stamps they might be looked for more often. If we are on a long trip we usually do not have extra time to go looking for a box that MIGHT not have been found many times. Depending on the time we have, we might check out more of your boxes if you allow us to see if the attempts. :)

It was alive and well when we visited in Feb. A great box. We rec'd an AQ mail a month or so later @ it from another boxer & gave her encouragement but no spoilers. She recorded a find on it at the end of Mar. My guess is that it's alive and well-- and a very nice carve and story!

Happy trails!

So far we have 49 out of 50 states represented with raffle bags - Mississippi is the ONLY state that so far has no representation... do you think you could donate something to represent Mississippi???

We are trying to fill a small/medium gift bag with things that represent your state. Food, patches, state trail maps, mugs, tshirts, etc. You don't have to break the bank... but we'd love to have your state represented!

If interested - contact mudflinginfools or Nittany ASAP... the deadline is drawing close for our August event.

Thanks folks!
