Maine is one of my favorite places... Visited there last Fall and did some letterboxing in the York/York Beach area. We noticed the clues were a bit more "cryptic" than we were used to, but a lot of fun. Had to visit the public library in York to get some background information, and met some nice people while searching and asking for directions as well. There were a few boxes we weren't able to find, but plan to do another trip and will try again. We also noted that some of them are not listed on Atlas Quest, but are on LBNA. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

I'm sure someone else has probably done this before but I was trying to put a new twist on getting some of my new box's clues. This has also took me longer than just posting the clues in a straight forward way but it seems like fun to me. What do you guys think??
Tell me honestly...is this practical? fun?? do-able??
some examples:

Thanks, DixieKin

I asked my sister for suggestions (I told her what parks you would be visiting), and she had this to say:
That's a big trip! I looked up letterboxes by county on letterboxing.org. There are 4
listed in Piscataquis County, 31 in Hancock County and 14 in Penobscot County. That's
where all their parks are located. (I found more this way than searching by town on
Atlasquest.) And at least one mystery one is listed to be in Ellsworth.
Have a wonderful trip!

It's like a virtual letterbox only the answer takes you to the clue instead of a stamp image. I'd probably make it less confusing by telling them to fill in the blank with their answer like the virtual boxes do (less typing for you too!):
http://www.mountainkin.org/letterbox/_____.htm
3M's just posted a virtual letterbox (NC Hickory on a Stick) where you had to answer a bunch of questions to get the answer. Then the virtual stamp image was actually the clue that you needed for a traditional box.

Could I just combine all the boxes into one and use one new, bigger log that encompassed all 7...???
as far as businesses that I have a relationship with in Cherokee...there aren't any.
Not anymore!
I could try to spread them out in businesses etc but that would involve some places being fee areas and the boxes wouldn't really have a geographical link or connection. These were all along one trail or branches of that trail. I do want them in the same AREA at least. Ughh!!!!!

There are quite a few listed on this site within 25 miles of Santa Monica (I think more than 50), not so many within 25 miles of Malibu (13). I guess it depends on how far she wants to travel :)
I know gas prices have been prohibitive in us getting out as much as we would like (yesterday's trip used up an even $20 in gas).

Oh, well, that's quite a distance from my neck of the woods. (It's LA County, I believe). I can't see any boxes in Santa Monica, but there are a couple listed on LbNA for Malibu (and one even states that it's between Santa Monica and Malibu-- sounds perfect!). And if you use the AQ city directory and click on Santa Monica, you can find the boxes that are in cities fairly nearby. Good luck to your aunt-- it would be great to get some more SoCal boxers! There's a SoCal Yahoo group as well if she's interested.

They are at least willing to plant one. That's better than none! I'd ask them for their opinion on which box they would like to have planted and to suggest possible locations for the others. Find out what their reasons are for not wanting them all. Perhaps show them the success of the Biltmore boxes (their are quite a number of them on the grounds, I believe). Perhaps they have some good ideas-- perhaps not (you've got none now anyway so you have nothing to lose by asking for their suggestions).

It depends on how important it is to you to have lots of 'boxers find your box! Personally, as a lover of highly challenging, nearly imposible to decipher clues, these are right up my alley. Even if they're all the way across the country and I'll probably never get the boxes I like to try to solve them. NOTHING is more satisfying!
Then you have those who will take one look at these clues and change screens. . .

The Highlander and I will definitely be there wearing our normal clothes for a change (finally DON'T have to hide the wings!). I know the Quinns are coming and raiding my costume trunk to do so...anyone else? We were thinking of maybe setting up a little space at one of the tables or pavillions down the street at Pinewoods Park for stamping activity if there's more people coming. Let me know!

Some of the newer folks to boxing have asked about the LBNY tshirt some of us have (the one with the hiker logo on the front and the LBNY logo on the back. If there's enough interest, I think we could swing another order, but I need to hear from people first. You CAN buy them individually from the distributor, but they're like $25 or so from them and like half that for us. I have to check on the prices again, but if anyone wants one, now's the time to speak up!

Dixie:
I love it! I'd personally put a big log with all seven stamps in one box. (maybe that 4 quart lock n lock size? Put ask to put it in a place where the seekers will have time wo sit and ooh and aww over the stamps and take their time.. near a bench, or table or naturally occuring "place people can comfortably sit and LEARN" Put more educational stuff in the logbook like, every fifth or sixth page, so that when stamping in, seekers can learn more than what you can put in just the one clue.
I adore boxes like this.. chock full of goooooooooood stuff. And I'm looking forward to it when you figure it all out ;-D

good idea.
i will ask them more for their input.
the other 6 boxes are still there but I told him I would remove them by middle of next week and decide what to do. He was cool with that.
he did tell me he thought one letterbox would draw just as many nature and history lovers to the spot as 7 would. He has a point.

Dixiekin, I'm so glad that the tribal authority are at least glad to have you place a box there! If I ever get back to that area, I definitely plan to hunt these boxes.
As for what to do...I'd definitely encourage you to talk with the man who contacted you (manager? groundskeeper? some other authority figure?) and ask for his suggestions. Since they are open to working with you, they might partner with you for the placement. You could probably each learn something from the other. He might even have a perfect idea for a different place where you could hide a box big enough to contain all seven stamps. You might also find out specifically why they'd prefer one box over seven, and that information could give you a new idea about how to handle your placement.
I also love the idea suggested by 3Ms (I think) that included all the stamps in one box with a single logbook, but with further educational materials incorporated in the book.
My only real new suggestion is to look at the possibility of re-writing your clues so that seekers still have to follow the entire trail where the seven boxes were placed, perhaps picking up pieces of new clues along the way, finally finding a box with all seven stamps.
Hope some of that is helpful. Keep us updated on the results of your conversation.

I noticed this a few days ago but was too busy to post.
I always click on recent messages which takes me to recent messages from boards I have selected as my favorites...right?
after reading the first message I always just click on "next" and MOST of the time things are fine but sometimes I will start getting messages for "Letterboxing Washington", "Letterboxing California" and "letterboxing Romania"...huh?? Romania?? None of these are boards I have elected to view.
I can't be the ONLY one to notice this happening sometimes.
is there a bug that only pokes his head out on occassion to mess with DixieKin's brain??

I like the idea, especially since it relates specifically to the stamp and location.
I figured out the first one in only about 5 minutes. Not too hard. At the same time I learned something I hadn't before...I have never heard of Cherokee Syllabary before. Now I know something about it and even translated a word. Great for those who want to learn interesting new things and homeschoolers. If I lived in your area, I'd use your boxes with these clues to tie into a unit lesson on the Cherokee.
