Quote I wonder how many parks I've been to recently that I never would have gone if it wasn't for a letterbox in the area.

Ditto here. There are a lot of great parks I've been to that I wouldn't even have HEARD about if it hadn't been a letterbox planted there.

They must have REALLY had to pull out all the stops to find a regulation to prohibit boxes there. You have to really be looking for a regulation to warp that one into fitting the bill.

I bet it would be pretty interesting to find out what was edited out of the regulation that was stated. It would also be interesting to find out if anything like orienteering or something similar has ever been done in the park that pulled the boxes.

I use punctuation too! I have a mac and the keystrokes are pretty easy. When I had a pc, I could do it too, but I had to use more keystrokes, using the International Character set. Google it. For example í, might be, ALT+CNTL+0233, or some other number. On a mac, it's OPTION/alt+e, i; give it a try.

Ryan,
They are both boxes in this series:
Scooter Visits New Manchester

Scooter's Mom is the placer. I bet she will be sad to hear the news and we are as well since we haven't found these yet.

I wonder how many GA State park annual passes have been purchased by letterboxers who had never purchased them before.

If I must tell the truth...

I do speak Spanish, but my grammar is not the best. So I double check most of what I write on freetranslation.com

So for what I wrote on the AQ board, the translation site put the upside down exclamation points and question marks, tildes and accents on for me. I just copied and pasted.

When I type things "free hand", I do just what speedsquare said. Or I go into the "Insert" drop down menu, choose symbol, the scroll down until I find the one I want.

At least the official policy implies is that it is ultimately up to the park manager to decide if they will allow the "non traditional" activities and to what extent. So there is always hope in Scooter's Mom asking when she picks them up to see if there is a better location still in the park for them to be planted. I know I tried that approach with the confiscated Skidaway Island box in Savannah.

I did not get to meet with the park manager since she was out of town while I was there but we did trade some emails and she said she thought boxing or caching is a 'great hobby for people to get out and enjoy' but wanted to make sure placing them were 'in line with the goals and vision of the park'. Since I have not been down that way since September I have not followed up any further on this. *makes note to self to do just that, soon*

Hi!

I use a variety of websites for travel hotels, airfare & car rentals:

www.qixo.com
www.travelhero.com
www.mobissimo.com
www.kayak.com

For hotels, we like travelhero since it has reviews and great pictures, nearby attractions, etc.

We booked our June OR trip airfare on qixo since they were the cheapest in September.

To get a gauge of good airfare prices, you may want to try www.bestfares.com. While this is a member site - it offers a Quick Fare Finder on the left that lets you enter your home airport and the destination. You are then brought to a page with the top section being non-member pricing and the next section for members. Don't forget to click on the individual fares to get exclusion dates and how long before leaving you must order.

Hope this helps,

Mark

PS. If you want to get real aggressive with car rental - take the lowest price you find on the net and call to see if they can better their price or are running any specials.

I have several boxes in state parks here in Georgia. I do know they frown on it, but I don't think my boxes are bothering anyone. They are very close to trailside and finders don't have to trapse through the woods to get to them. I just wrote my clues in code so that they cannot be found if the parks service does a search. If they want to work hard enough to figure out the clue, then at least I didn't just tell them right where to go take it from.

We recently needed a 2 month rental and it would have cost us $2000+ if we had picked up the car at the airport. Saved almost 1000 by going just outside the airport, same car, same agency - Enterprise. Seems some airports charge a premium on rentals picked up on site. Look around for a rental pickup in the burbs or away from the city center. Take a cab to get your rental or in some cases they will come and pick you up. Nor

Yes, being a Cape Codder, the largest snakes I have run into are garter snakes. So I fearlessly pick up the rock and see several reptilian coils. I quickly dropped the rock and immediately thought, "oh, I hope I didn't hurt him."

Sadly, we kept poking around for the box for quite some time trying to not further disturb the snake.

This reminds me of this great commercial spoof that was on Saturday Night Live a number of years ago. It was when the cola companies were making "clear" versions of their products--in other words, they didn't add any coloring, so the soda looked like 7-Up or Sprite in the plastic bottles. The spoof they did was for "clear" gravy. They used corn syrup, of course, to show on the food. So they show people pouring corn syrup on beef and mashed potatoes and gravy--you get the idea.

The one part that made me cringe when I saw it (laughing, too, of course) was when Julia Sweeney dips a chicken drumstick in the corn syrup and then takes a big bite of it, with this look on her face that says it is the best thing she's ever eaten.

It was hilarious.

Ah, well, that explains why I couldn't find the boxes on AQ. =) The park ranger only told me the names of the individual boxes of the series rather than the series name, and when I did a search with the name of the park in the clue it also didn't help because the park's name wasn't in the clue at all.

For awhile, I was thinking maybe the boxes were listed on LbNA, but I couldn't find them there either and I got scratching my head--where the heck ARE these clues listed?!

Okay, Warrior Woman here, first generation Cuban American, born in Miami, FL just before the Batista/Castro revolution.

I can give you a BAZILLION easy, medium, hard, and impossible authentic ethnic recipes, but here's one that contains two ingredients that I make that fakes out even authentic hispanics:

Arroz con frijoles negro (black beans and rice)

Go to the grocery store. Buy two cans of GOYA brand BLACK BEAN SOUP. Not the black beans. The BLACK BEAN SOUP. Buy some white rice. Get serving accessories (plastic spoons and some dixie cups). Go home.

Make about two cups of cooked white rice, but add a teaspoon of canola oil and a teaspoon of salt to the cooking water. Set aside, covered, so it doesn't dry out.

Open the two cans of Goya brand black bean SOUP. Plunk the contents into a small sauce pan. Heat until hot.

Dump the rice into an appropriate sized pot-luck GLASS dish. Dump the hot black bean SOUP on top. Mix. Yes, it should be wet.

You are done.

Serve in dixie cups with a spoon.

Want to get so fancy that you can't even stand it? Put a few sprigs of fresh cilantro on it for garnish (in place of the ubiquitous parsley).

Now you are done and you look like Martha Stewart.

Arriba!

I love it! I make my famous Indian Curried Meatballs much the same way.

Buy one bag frozen meatballs. Put in crockpot. Add one 16 oz. jar of Chef Shaiek ( or other) medium hot curry sauce. Refill empty jar with water. Add to crockpot. Heat through and accept compliments.

I brought this to the Finger Lakes gathering last year and it was a big hit!

Quote 1) Favorite stock to buy right now and why?

I've been considering either Wal-Mart or Microsoft at the moment. Both are solid, very profitable companies which have been beaten down quite a bit from their heydays. Microsoft I think might get a boost later this year when they release the Vista operating system. Or was that postponed until next year? Whenever. *shrug* The point being it could be a catalyst for better times. =) Sure, Microsoft might not be growing as fast as it did in the old days, but they do have a monopoly and will be very profitable for a long, long time. *nodding*

Wal-Mart I think is also beaten down, but I don't really see any catalyst that might bring it back up in the near future. But in the long run, I think it'll likely do very well.

Quote 2) Best source of current financial information?

Annual and quarterly reports. =)

I just learned that I didn't have Letterboxing Georgia checked as a favorite board. I thought I did, but wasn't getting the posts about the New Manchester boxes. :( I did get several emails about it today and want to thank everyone for letting me know. I called the park but the ranger wasn't in and the person who answered the phone didn't know anything about it. I left a message for him to call me and will be going out as soon as possible to either talk them into letting me replant them somewhere else in the park or at least get them back. I'll let you know what happens.

I don't buy stocks myself, at least not right now. Here's some ideas however.

1. Boeing and/or Lockheed. Boeing is now pulling ahead of Airbus b/c of Airbus' late deliveries and problems. Boeing is developing or has finished their 787 Dreamliner and they have orders booked for all planes from 717 up. Lockheed is finalizing the JSF project, which will supply jets for years to come, replacing all of our militaries current lines of jets. Another would be Goodrich Aerospace (not completely sure of the name, sorry) as well as Pratt & Whitney, as they are both supplying major parts for these.

Another good one is Honeywell Aerospace, they are posting record profits, altho I have not heard whether or not they are involved with either Boeing or Lockheed, chances are extremely good.

2. For these companies, myself. I work in the industry and keep an eye out (more money I make my company, more goes in my pocket). I know that I have personally sold a few parts specifically for these projects. Most recently last week when I got a huge fee plus extra for doing it sooner for one of them, and I was told "money is no object, how much do you want so I can get them in a few weeks instead of a few months." It is fairly rare in this business to be told "money is no object" and I have had it happen two times in the last two years.... meanwhile, some people will tell me that they're not paying 60 cents for some wire and terminals.

I called the 'GA DNR Division of State Parks & Historic Sites' back in Nov.

John Thompson
GA State Parks
(404) 656-6564

After explaining letterboxing, I was given permission to plant in any state park. The only restriction is that you must let the park manager know that you are planting in his park.

And for the record, check this out:
http://www.legis.state.ga.us/cgi-bin/gl_codes_detail.pl?code=12-3-10

GA Code 12-3-10(n) states that 'NO ELECTRONIC DEVICE' can be used to search for hidden treasure.

It doesn't say anything about a compass!

GA Code 12-3-10(c) states that no person may 'mark on, deface, injure, displace, dig, excavate, remove, or construct on any real or personal property on any park, historic site, or recreational area, except when done with special written permission granted by the commissioner of natural resources or his authorized representative.

It says nothing about hiding! Okay, so maybe we are displacing some leaves and sticks, so what.

When you do speak with the park manager, you might also suggest he browse through the logbook to see where people have come from to visit this park because of the letterbox. I came from Griffin, more than an hour away.

I'm getting off my high horse now,
