I'm new!!!

Seeing as how I'm up late (and really shouldn't be) I'll make a post! ^.^

I'm super new to Letterboxing. An old boss of mine told me about it several years ago and I didn't rediscover it until recently. I'm SUPER excited to be apart of this community and very eager to get started hunting down some boxes but I have a lot to learn and nobody to ask questions of.

I look forward to crossing paths...and stamps!

Hello!

Welcome! You just might have 'boxers right in your neighborhood! You may want to try posting on your state's board with your general area and see if anyone is nearby.

hello and welcome! you and I seem to be the only people up this late tonight...I still get excited about heading out to hunt new boxes in my area...

I had to write an essay for English class, and I picked how I got into boxing as my subject. It's on my blog here. if you like my writing style, feel free to click on the doohickey on the right hand side to subscribe to my blog...then the headlines will show up on your "mypage" whenever I post.

That blog's for letterboxing and other hobby and life in general stuff. my other blog, found here is for my writing. Right now there's a novel going up one chapter at a time. There's a complete novel in the older posts, plus a bunch of short stories and other "stuff" about writing. You can subscribe to that one too, using the clicky doohickey button on the right.

And you won't offend me if you don't like my writing, and if you don't read it. pay no attention to the writer behind the keyboard, she runs off at the fingers when the hour is late...

I'm almost always the last to get to sleep. I do my best work late at night. =) (Okay, to be perfectly honest, I'm less likely to disturb most people's surfing pleasure when I'm mucking around with the website late at night!)

Thank you! And I'll definitely look into that. Is it really okay to actively seek other Boxers in your neck of the woods?

Perhaps we have a different definition of "late" haha :) I say late because I have to be off to work in a few hours. I'm usually up much later but I'll be a good little worker-bee so off to bed for me.

Sure! I wouldn't give out your address or anything, but it's perfectly fine to get on your state board and see if anyone is in your general area. Use all the usual internet precautions.
Also, did you know that the default position for your logbook is "private"? If you want to, you can make it public so that once you start finding boxes others can see what area you 'box in. Whether that is something you want or not is up to you... but you have that option.

Thanks. I've been playing around with preferences and not 100% sure what's best for now so I left a lot of them as the default. But I'll check the boards for my area. It looks like there are quite a few meet-ups. How exciting! XD

It's not that late in the Rockies

I'm on mountain standard time

before college, I routinely stayed up until 2 am, then slept until 9 or 10...8 hours
now I have 7 am class 2 days a week. to get my lunch made and catch my bus, I have to get up at 5. I still need that 8 hours. so 10 has become late. midnight is "waaaay past my bedtime".

Absolutely it is. I'd go on to your states board and post that you are new to the hobby and would like to find someone to box with. There maybe be a solo boxer out there who would love to box with someone else. Meet in a public place and do an exchange, take some time to get to know them. I know I always prefer to box with someone else. It's so much more fun and so much safer. :-) Welcome to the hobby. I hope you enjoy many years of hunting! :-)

You're also in Arizona where they don't "spring forward" for daylight savings. Right now, it's the same as Pacific time! You don't change times--you just change time zones twice per year! ;o)

O.K. I give...I've seen quisps mentioned several times and have read the definition for them under glossary. Can someone give me some ideas as to what you might send as a quisp?

This is the place to ask. My family and I have been letterboxing for about a year, but only really started using AQ about 6 months ago.

Everyone here has been great. There is a lot of information in the glossary and under the Home tab.

Have a great time. I've had a great time learning about all the different types of letterboxing and recently started doing postal letterboxes. We are also going to our second event this weekend. Those are tons of fun.

Welcome!

I have gotten a couple of quisps. One was a bikini and one was a heart and key. I made one that is a small kitty from one of my daughters books. She loved it. It is very simple.

It is my understand that it can be everything. I think people of used recycled stamps too.

Small pieces of paper with small imprints of stamps on them (probably the most appreciated since they can be listed as an "Other Box",
Small LTC
Postage Stamp
Origami (folded of course)
Pog
I've seem miniture toys
trading cards (if label is big enough)
Picture
Cartoon

If it is small and flat it will work.

Yes, exactly! I have a much easier time telling people I'm on pacific time during the summer than I do explaining that I really did say--and mean--mountain standard, even though everyone else is on daylight time. here in arizoona though, it makes sense not to change time like everyone else. it's so hot here, we wait for sunset so we can go outside and do stuff...we don't want an extra hour of sunlight in the evenings.

I've read some where that the first quisp was a Shrinky Dink of the Quisp cereal. That's how it got it's name.

I've found ones that are Shrinky Dinks with a label tied on. I've found one that are a small peice of paper. Mine are the one side stick address labels with the peel still on. I cut them in to smallish peices and label them.

To add to that - quisps were hidden under labels to encourage postal boxers to clean off the excess layers in a ring. Uncovering a 'quisp' which can be anything small enough to hide under the labels. I most often carve smaller images for hikers and make a few copies of them prior to launching the hikers...

Unless you are on the reservation, and then it does change time.

No, she's not on the reservation, but there is reservation land between Phoenix and Tucson (and other places in Arizona) They do switch to DST. *shaking head*

I've seen her place too, several times. Even slept on her floor before I knew real names.
