My 'new' vehicle is a Toyota Camry 2006! My boxing buddies offered to buy me a vanity plate. Of course I want it to be boxing oriented... any ideas?

I have several, some were available some not. I'd rather stay away from my trail name.

Ryan,

I think you are awesome and the fact that you do work 24-7, seven days a week to make a hobby that we all love and enjoy (so much) possible for all of us, deserves at the very least, a pat on the back....

I can't imagine anyone comparing Atlas Quest to LBNA...there is no comparison. I belong to both sights...but spend all of my time here!! I heard about LBNA first, but then was directed to Atlas Quest though a clue and have been coming to your site ever since!!

Your website is easy to surf, has fun articles to read, people to connect with and the whole setup is very well done. I enjoy waking up every morning and logging in to see what is new...and it is the last site I check before bed. I love that you can choose different backgrounds and such when entering clues (not the same old "scroll" thingie) each time.

I appreciate your hard work and efforts and do plan to become a premium member in July when I ask my hubby for a $35 birthday present...well worth it to me!! It NEVER occurred to me to think of you as "greedy" and I resent that anyone has said as much...they just don't have a clue what it takes to purchase and run a website!!

Chin up and know that we at Atlas Quest appreciate you!!!

As grateful as I am at your personal sacrifice at doing this, it's pretty obvious to me this ride can't go on forever. Everyone else better make sure to enjoy it while it lasts.

Thanks.

I agree with everything Turtlelove has said. I, too, found Atlasquest by following a clue from the LBN web site. I am fairly new to the LB scene, but I enjoy it very much. Atlasquest is, by far, the better site. LBN doesn't have the interaction amongst others who share this hobby and that is the thing that makes AQ addictive. It's the people, the boards and post, articles and the camaraderie I see here every day.
Ryan, you have made that happen and I think it's a great thing that you can make something you love your full time job.
There are always going to be "those" people who get off on pooing all over something just because they can. Don't let 'em get to you! You have many supporters who will gladly poo on those poo pooers! (sorry for all the poo talk, I just joined the LBHs)...
I say keep up the good work! This hobby wouldn't be the same without you and your site.

Hey Ryan!

You know, if you REALLY wanted to make money from this letterboxing site gig, you would charge everyone... but you don't. You allow everyone to surf here for FREE! You could charge a fee for people posting to the boards...hmm... $1.00 per so many posts. You could charge for all the great tutorials on your site.... hmm.... $0.50 a peep. You could charge for posting information regarding upcoming events.....

I think you get the point. To all those complainers, a big raspberry in your direction! Phtttt!!!!!

I love this site - you put a lot into it and it shows. You DESERVE to be compensated for your work!

I would still enjoy letterboxing without Atlas Quest, but using A.Q. makes it that much better.

Thank you for all you do!

Hey all,

I appreciate your sentiments, but let's not start bashing LbNA--that's not what my post was about. It's a perfectly fine website for what it does, which is providing clues, and for a lot of people, that's all they want.

The grumbling I occasionally hear about--it's the one about money that bothers me the most since I think it's totally unjustified. I suspect some of it might be people who just prefer LbNA to AQ, and that's okay--just like many of you prefer AQ to LbNA, there will be people who also prefer LbNA. Something for everyone, to each their own. But sometimes I feel like the money comparison is used unfairly to slander Atlas Quest as the 'greedy, monopolistic' letterboxing website. Atlas Quest has cost me a lot, financially speaking, but it's worth it to me. I've never enjoyed a job more. =) So far as I can tell, it's only a tiny minority of people who seem to think this, but since they rarely will tell me or say something like that in public, I'm not sure how else to convince them how wrong they are.

But to suggest it's just about money, that's just insulting and so utterly wrong.

There are perfectly good things that people can grumble about and blame on me, but that's not one of them. =)

In any case, let's avoid the LbNA bashing. Those who do prefer the site probably don't like to see it, and imagine how you'd feel if you saw a bunch of people ganging up on the Yahoo Groups to say how horrible Atlas Quest was. It cuts both ways. Both sites have their strengths and weaknesses, and you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but let's respect those who disagree too.

Hey, you know, I've made the same donation to LBNA that I've made as a premium member to AQ...I support both websites because they give me what I need most.....clues!

I think that a lot of it is about change. People are always used to the way things "were" when they started...and the change and evolution of the hobby is hard to adjust to, so it becomes easy to blame AQ for driving those changes, even if that's not the case.

It's sometimes hard for me to adjust too...I think the proliferation of boxes makes it hard for a lot of newer people to appreciate what a treat a new box to find in your area was!

I saw something like that one a yahoo list from another site and wondered if that might be from administrators of that site. (I dropped the list, small minded people just don't make my day) These same people don't think that ANYONE should make money from letterboxing and that's just silly. Don't we all buy lock-n-locks, baggies, paper, carving material. ink...etc??? Of course we do. Someone is going to make money from anything we do in America. It's the AMERICAN WAY! Frankly, I'd rather support Webfoot, Dixie and the Great Green One(among others) than Walmart.

Ryan, we who wear the hat know that you sacrifice for the love of this sport. We know that you don't deserve the sniping by people like those that I described above. For some of us, the hat is about supporting you and thanking you for your efforts. We adore this site, and we appreciate you. I also know for a fact that this is not exclusive to those that proudly don our spiffy green hats.

Thank you Ryan. I really get annoyed when people bash LbNA just because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of AQ.

Because of your comment, I'm sending in my money to become a premium member.

I agree, no bashing of LBNA..... it is the site that introduced me to Letterboxing and carving too!

However, for anyone to imply that A.Q. is in it for the money is wrong.

There are faster (easier too) ways to make money than running a website.

So, G.T. thanks for your hard work!

let's avoid the LbNA bashing...

Hi again,
I just wanted to make sure everyone knew I wasn't "bashing" LBNA...that is not my style. I simply wanted to thank you, Ryan, and compliment you on a well done website that offers more perks and is free....

Like I said, I am a member of both websites, but like the discussions, and other options, etc., and overall easiness of using AQ.

Again,
Thanks!!

Ryan I think it is downright amazing that you've been able to support yourself through this website by only asking for people to pay $35/year. And making it optional at that. The amount of work you've put into the site is INSANE and very obvious. I run my own website and update the websites of my employer and though I'm definitely still at the beginner/low intermediate html levels, I am AMAZED at what you've built here. The site is so comprehensive and runs so fluidly! Anyone who thinks you're doing this for the money just blatantly doesn't know what they're talking about. I'm getting paid tomorrow and if I can swing it I'm buying myself a hat hopefully, but if not this pay check, definitely the next one! :) Unfortunately, my credit card bill took quite a hit after National Plant A Letterbox Day preparations. ;) :D Thanks so much for all you do!!!

I too have had a couple of comments come my way about selling shirts etc and trying to profit off letterboxing. These same people are sometimes paying a stranger who knows nothing about LBing for a case of printed t-shirts or for 10 containers. *shakes head* I print garments, uniforms etc. if I can better my business doing something I am interested in and give folks something they want ...what is wrong with that (as long as it's not illegal etc)?

if you can better our online experience with LBing...and I believe you have...go for it!

Ryan, you are obviously putting something out there that folks want.
it's a service and it's entertainment.
how many millions are spent every weekend on movies and entertainment?
this is a drop in the bucket and if folks don't like it...they don't have to subscribe...seems to me plenty of folks like it just fine :)

Ha- that's exactly what I was planning to ask my husband for as a birthday gift too!

Frankly, I'm amazed that there aren't REI ads, Google ads, Hobby Lobby ads and what all cluttering up the site. It wouldn't offend me at ALL if there were (altho I'll confess the very streamlined appearance of the pages is quite restful to my eye) because I know that stuff like this ISN"T FREE. There are costs associated and those costs are typically spread to the consumers of services like this. There's a parenting website I frequent that has ENORMOUSLY busy boards but their stance is that they are a community first. So it's free to anyone and everyone. But, like Ryan, they do charge for a premium membership that gets a you a few minor whistles and bells and they have some little "added on services" you can buy ... (like anonymously adding a funny tag to someone's name for a temporary period of time) No one resents paying for these things. well- actually, a few people resented it and... they left! So really, it was win-win; they got to leave and not have to be offended by the "commercialism" of the site (as if!) and the rest of us didn't have to hear them complain about it!

I have only been here a short time, have only been letterboxing since the beginning of this year... but the more I explore this site the more impressed I am with it, and the more impressed I am with the community of people here. This is darn near unique, in my experience using the internet as an interface for a hobby or interest. And, of course, the more I get hooked on letterboxing! ;)

So HECK yeah, make some income at this Ryan, because if the alternative is no AtlasQuest then the sport will be a less rich and satisfying experience for many of us. And any time you're in Eugene- the beer's on me. :)

I do think there's somewhat of a difference between buying a premium membership to support a site that we love and being subjected to a slew of businesses hawking wares on the site. It's a free market economy, so I think it's great for someone to create their own website and sell to anyone interested. Constant promotion on the boards becomes a little spam-like.

I think these sorts of businesses are very different from the service AQ provides. I would hate to see an over-proliferation of them.
