As someone pointed out that there is no travel board in the hobby box *coughsilentdougcough*, I created one.

Travel, as we all know, often leads us to some interesting foods. Since I watched the Amazing Race last night where some of the teams had to eat cow lips--something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies--I thought it would made the board sound more interesting than it really is to add that to the name of the board. =)

We do not encourage the eating of cow lips. Unless, of course, you actually enjoy them.

Hi!

We're looking for recommendations of where to take a family trip somewhere along the gulf coast of FL in early April. We don't want to go as far south as Ft. Myers (want to keep the drive time from Atlanta to under 8 hours). We've been to Destin. What else is there that has nice beaches in addition to family activities/interests?

The Clearwater and St. Petersburg area is tops. Plenty of places to stay, great white beaches and plenty of letterboxes to search for. Do a search for boxes within 25 miles of St. Petersburg and get the list. Go 50 miles and get many more.

I grew up in Bradenton, which is just south of the St Pete/Clearwater area, which I will second as a great place to visit. The Bradenton/Sarasota area is nice too - a little quieter than St Pete, both are smaller towns. Sarasota has a few family friendly attractions, including the Ringling House and grounds (as in John Ringling of Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus) which includes an art museum and circus museum. There is also a fun place I used to visit as a kid, the "Cars and Music of Yesterday" which I think is still in business - antique cars and an amazing collection of giant old circus/fairground calliopes. The Hernando DeSoto National Memorial is in Bradenton, if you need a bit of history to add to your trip. The gulf coast beaches are all wonderful, I could point you to my favorites in the area but bear in mind I haven't been back in 10 years or so.

Also in the Tampa/St Pete area is Busch Gardens if you need a theme-park fix, and I'm sure there is some kind of White-Water type water park there too... at least there used to be...

I used to go to Coquina beach as a kid (between Bradenton Beach and Longboat Key) - you are right, none of them are very wide, but after growing up with the sugar-sand of the Gulf Coast I've never been able to get used to the gray Atlantic beaches.

DD and I went few years back to Cape San Blas and St Joseph SP ("voted america's #1 beach"). It's a quieter spot with great beaches - with the open ocean on one side and calmer inlet on the other side of the peninsula. It's not too far from Port St. Joe and Apalachicola. Not sure what there is for family activities besides the beach and water stuff.

How about a challenge to have every rest area/overlook on an interstate in the USA have a driveby letterbox. It would sure help break up the stops. How many in your state have not been planted?

This is a wonderful idea.... when we first started boxing we were very surprised that a rest area by us had a letterbox, and we have been scouting others to plant at.

I like this challenge! I could have all of I-80 in Illinois done no problem by the end of Feb. 2007. Always on this road and always stopping at the rest stops.

Fun challenge! I got a rest area box just after Christmas and it was a fun break! However, that same boxer (you know who you are, *coughzoemommacough* ;-)) has got most of the ones on my regular route to visit my mom.

However, I have a few ideas..... ;-))

I was just about to post a question asking how to find them along the rest stops? We travel between Rochester and Albany frequently and with the kids and the dog, usually stop at least once.

Where do I go to find the clues if there are any?

Use the Trip Planner function. It will let you select the route you take and then you can scroll through those looking for rest areas.:

It would be helpful if they were labeled somehow to help indicate that they were at a rest stop. I have seen several called I-270 Overlook etc. Then when I do a trip planner and see that type of name it lets me know for sure it is a rest area. By the way I-270 is not on the choices! It is main Interstate from Frederick to Washington DC. Can we fix that GT?

There are actually two welcome centers in my county. One is already done by another. My daughter has one to plant at the other if we ever have a sunny day while in that direction. I have four five more that are on semi-regular trips that are targeted!

Kudos to "Flat tire" who planted a few rest stops this summer. I was able to get two of those boxes that had a state theme!

When I was home on Christmas vacation, I placed a box at the Kentucky/Tennesee line. I have a rest stop (actually one on each side of the road) close to one of my boxes that when I go to check on it, I'm going to plant there. I had already decided when I placed the first reststop box, that I would do a series of these over time. I will hit the rest areas on I-20 from South Carolina to Alabama and then some during my travels with work. Guess I need to start keeping a few boxes in my car, eh?

By definition, 270 is a spur road. Interstates only have two digit numbers, with 1-9 before them meaning something else (ie, 1 = side route starting at interstate, does not meet back up with another interstate, 2 = loop, returns to the road is started from, etc). So there is nothing to "fix", sorry.

I only used 'spur' as in not a "real" interstate but some sort of interecting route that falls under the federal interstate system. So technically it is a 'spur' but not a 'Spur'... *grin*
