Thanks, Ryan, I am happy to see this one since I do scrapbook all of my boxes. I have fallen way behind in my real life scrapbooking but I am now in the habit of coming home from a hunt and printing the clues out on a page of the coordinated paper that I bought specifically for my scrapbook and then attaching the stamp to the page. I journal any stories that I had that day along with a listing of who I boxed with. Thank goodness I have a digital camera because I then just quickly add any pictures that are really good to the page (or pages). I found early on that even though the woods are absolutely beautiful, page after page of pictures of trees tends to get monotonous so I now only add pictures that feature something special.
Because I follow a basic template for all my pages, they are easy to do and I manage to keep up with everything. My true delights are the pages that deal with gatherings that I attend, there are a lot more pictures and stamps to apply and I do use my scrapbooking creativity just a tad bit more on those pages.

Hope to hear from others who pursue this hobby also,
Jan of Team Little Dog

I have never been a scrapbooker until I started letterboxing. I also journal, add photo's, stickers, cut outs etc.. to my stamp pages. Keeping them in a 3 ring binder. I have to keep my scrapbooking down to a minimum because I can easily see where it could get out of hand.

Right now I am gathering photo's to make our son a scrapbook of his life so far. He's graduating with his AA this Saturday and then heading on to another school for his BA. He's getting engaged this summer and I want to be able to give it to him and his fiancé prior to their wedding. Since it will be two years away I have plenty of time. That is unless letterboxing get's in the way! :~)

I have to laugh at that! My new grandson is only 11 weeks old today and I swore that I would start his life and keep current with it. Well, guess what.....I am way back on week 2 in scrapbooking. It doesn't help that I take tons of pictures every time I see him and that puts more pressure on me to get more scrapbooking done. It is one of those hobbies that you can never get caught up on. That is why I am so happy that doing my letterboxing pages is so routine and easy.

What a great gift!
I have a friend at work that made the most lovely scrapbook of her grandchildren. She started the day that her daughter announced she was pregnant. She took photos of them hugging her and wrote down her feelings. The photos of the birth and the growth of the children are beautifully documented. I'm sure that her daughter appreciates it since as a new mother there is just never enough time to put things in the baby books. I was very good about trying to keep up with the baby books but by the 3rd child I have noticed that his is noticeably thinner than the first. My children love these baby books. They can't get enough of reading about themselves. To document a life that is precious to you and show how much you value those memories is just the greatest gift! I'm sure it is a wedding present they will really cherish!

Thanks Linda:

I hope they do. It is a lot of work. Our daughter has one I actually paid someone to do and it's beautiful.

I can see now why I paid so much! LOL...It was worth it.

What a nice idea to have everything laid out in advance! I am a scrapbooker too and because of the "perpetually behind" thing I had not given any serious thought to memorializing my boxing adventures (other than of course my log book). But your idea sounds eminently do-able.

Actually, my letterbox log-book is something I picked up on the scrapbook aisle in wal-mart. It is pretty small, a mini-scrapbook it - only about 4x4, maybe 3x3, but, being only 94 cents, and coming with a sheet of stickers and mini-die cuts, hard to go wrong.

(My kids are 5 and 8, didn't start scrapbooking until my youngest turned one. So, I'm only about a year behind... as long as you don't count the first 3 years of my oldest's life and all the family history prior to that! ;-)

I'm pretty new to scrapbooking, but I was wondering what you do with vellum? I've tried a couple of different things, like, cutting it out of a sheet and putting it on a colored square for instance, but the glue shows through sometimes?

I have thought about taking a class, but there's none offered in my town. I'm waiting until summer because the nearest class I could take is about 40 miles away, but I don't want to pay for it and take the chance I won't be able to go often b/c of the weather. Luckily the town it's in is on Lake Huron, so we can make a day of it everytime I go in the summer ; )

Thanks in advance,

I'm with you! What the heck DO you do with vellum? The only way I've found to attach it to a project and have it look decent is with brads (usually with one in each corner). I buy sheets now and then in hopes that I'll think of something creative to do. Alas, nothing yet.

Have you checked to see if there's a Creative Memories consultant in your area? I have a friend that's into Creative Memories and she's full of great scrapbooking ideas.

I foung a good use for the self adhesive velum, it comes in a few different colors. I cut it a little larger than the cover of my logbook(it's a scrapbooking book maybe 5 by 7 or a little larger, and I covered front and back with it to protect it when I set it down. Here in the NW it's always soggy and I didn't want my cover to get wet and fall apart.

I also attach it with brads. A scrapbooking teacher once showed me some adhesive specifically to attach vellum, but I found it hard to use. I think if it is used correctly, the vellum adhesive is pretty clear. They had it at A.C. Moore at that point, about a year ago...

3M makes an adhesive that is specifically designed for vellum. It is called Vellum Tape and is usually around $6.00 a roll, but that roll lasts a really long time. I use vellum for journaling. I will type my journaling on the computer and print it on vellum paper. If you use the vellum tape, you don't even see it at all; it looks like the vellum is just floating there.

Hope this helps.

I use vellum as a mat behind photos. I usually tear the edges instead of cut it too. It looks cool.

If you put the picture on top, you can hide whatever adhesive you want to use behind the picture. Otherwise, the vellum tape works well, if you can find it.

Creative Memories used to sell a clear tape for use with Vellum... they may sell it still. In fact I think they now sell clear Photo Splits; I'm sure I've seen clear adhesive squares in the craft stores. While the adhesive may be clear I'm not sure if you can still see the outline of the tape.

You can also adhere vellum cutouts "indirectly"... using an overlayed sticker for example.

Plain vellum is a great way to soften bright colors. If you think your pink, f'rinstance, is too bright, trying placing some vellum over it. If it is thin, it can work over journaling - but you'll want a strong contrast of ink-to-paper.

I have several sheets of embossed vellum I picked up on a clearance sale. It works well layed over some solid-colored paper as an accent piece, but it's a little too busy for a background, or with other patterns, I think.

My sister is a Creative Memories consultant and they still have the clear photo splits but I've found that you can still see the adhesive under the vellum...like a little square of darker color.

I don't work with vellum alot but I've found, in the times I have used it, that the vellum tape made by Wacky Tack is suberb. It's almost like applying dry glue...and I have never been able to see it under the vellum no matter where it is. I think probably the best investment in vellum is the self-adhesive sheets...my sister has some of these and you certainly don't have to fool around with all the "will the tape show through" business that just gets in the way of quality scrapbooking time.

Also, if you want to write on vellum, I have used the Slick Writers...they are great.

It also possible to print on vellum. If you set your printer to Transparency (those clear plastic sheets used in overhead projectors), it will print with less ink and dry quicker, leading to less smearing.

Hi Moonduck -

The best adhesive I've found for adhering vellum is called Wacky Tac Vellum Tape. QVC sells it for a very reasonable price (you get three rolls of it) You also receive the Wacky Tac tool, which you use to rub the adhesive onto the vellum. I have also used a bone folder and achieved the same results.

Let me know if you have questions about the vellum or anything else! I'd be happy to help. I adore scrapbooking and have been scrappin' for about three years now.

FYI - there is a Great Lakes Mega Meet coming up in May in Novi. They have classes available and an awesome product selection :) Website is www.glmm.com

Happy Scrappin'!

i am glad to know i am not the only geek who scrapbooks my letterboxing finds. i am trying to scrapbook other parts of my life, but letterboxing seems to be the easiest for me.. the pages almost make themselves. i use a lot of vellum. there is a stamp ink called 'StazOn' that goes on true and does really stay. I also print thru my photo printer right on the vellum. gives photos and downloaded images a great transparent look. (I also find a lot of those images from doverpublishing.com. thay have a sampler e-mail you can sign up for and get free sample images a couple times a month.) for my lb scrapbook, i keep it small. and 8x8 book, and print out all my photos smaller. it turns out great.

All of my traditional finds are made into scrapbook pages, too.

And in case anyone is interested...
those cute "fancy cut" scissors are 2 for $1.00 at Michaels. They are usually 1.99!

HELLO all -- I am very new here and just discovered LBing yesterday thru 2peas [big SBing website] and found my first box today. So, know almost nothing about LBing but everything you can think of about scrapbooking.

I love using vellum but it does have it's challenges. If people have already seen some of these suggestions, sorry to repeat.

Yes, regular adhesives will show thru. There are specific glues made for vellum. Vellum tape can be bought in rolls, and in dispensers. Xyrons are good for vellum but I personally don't like the look pf vellum completely covered in adhesive. [Xyrons are machines that attach adhasive to the entire back of something to make it into a "sticker" -- vellum tape is just Xyron adhesive on a roll, no machine necessary]. Glue dots now has sheets of vellum adhesive -- I love these as you really can't see it at all.

You can attach vellum at the corners using any metal fasteners -- brads, eyelets, snaps, etc. More low-tech, you can put a small sticker in each corner. You can also use a sewing machine if oyu like machine stitching on your pages. I don't, but I have handstiched vellum down with embroidery floss.

You can also put something on top of the vellum to hide the adhesive. For example I might glue down a top edge of vellum and then stick buttons over the top edge with glue dots. The buttons hide the line of glue.

As for what to do with it -- I primarily use vellum for text -- especially quotes. I also write up my journaling on a computer, print it on vellum and adhere. I've also used it as standard page backing, layered over cardstock or even patterns. Page mats and frames, titles, cut out shapes with a die cut machine -- I've done champagne bottles for a wedding, snowflakes for winter, etc -- or use it as any other decorative page element. I even used blue vellum to create a "falls" on a Niagra Falls page.

Another way to attach vellum is to punch 2 holes in the vellum and whatever you're attaching it to (on the side or the top, whichever you prefer or works best for your design.)

Use a piece of ribbon. From the front side, put both ends of the ribbon through the holes.

Flip it over. Thread the ends of the ribbon through the holes to the front, going through the opposite holes.

Pull the ends through and tight on the front. The tension usually holds it in place. This is often called a Love Knot, because it is popular on wedding invitations.

If I've totally confused you, let me know.

Here's something I love to do with vellum:

Stamp on it with a rubber stamp in clear embossing ink. Emboss design with white embossing powder.

Rub Q-tips onto chalk pastels, then rub onto the embossed design. There are chalk sticks or little chalk squares, etc. Combine 2 colors on the Q-tip before coloring for fun effects. Rub all sorts of similiar colors next to other for depth and shading.

The chalks will adhere to the embossed design and will need no sealing with sprays or whatever.

Floral designs are great for this as the colors are soft and subtle.

One of my favs!

If you want, I'll try to post pictures.

I love the chalks idea! I've had a box of chalks that I can never figure out how to use really well.

You say the chalks adhere to the embossed design without sealing...that's even better. Does it just stick? Do you have to color it while the embossing powder is still alittle wet?

I'd like to make greeting cards with chalked designs but the chalk always rubbed off onto the envelope.

No, emboss the powder fully and let it cool.

It just sticks! No sealing necessary!

That's why I love this, it's so easy. If fact, you could probably take pre-embossed vellum, Q-tips & chalk pastels on planes, as there is no liquid.

Course, I wouldn't want the airline to take away my chalks for some other reason . . .

Stamp an image in clear embossing ink and emboss in white.

Flip the vellum over and color in the image with colored pencils on the back.

There might be a leaf with a few lines/details, but that's on the front. You only color in the entire leaf on the back.

When you look at the front, it's wonderfully colored in and shaded with lots of detail from the image -- but this was as easy as coloring in a coloring book.

Felt pens also work.

Can you tell I like vellum?

Thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth on this too, I've been scrapbooking for over 10 years (my first love) and a few of my favorite ways to adhere vellum are with brads, eyelets or ribbon or other embellishments like buttons. Xyron is pretty good, and it holds really well, but it will give the vellum a mottled look. You can use spray adhesive, very invisible but creates quite a mess, do it outside and lay down some newspaper. 3M makes a repositionable glue stick that is great, just a couple of swipes on the back, makes it like a sticky note. My all-time favorite, though, has got to be sewing. Either with a sewing machine (yes!) or stitch in on by hand. There are lots of different ways to do this. As others have mentioned, too, you can hide your adhesive behind whatever is printed on it or placed over the top of it.
A tip to remember, you're not trying to make it indestructible. The sheet protectors keep everything from being knocked about. You really only need to tack it in a couple of places and that's usually good enough.
Good luck,
K
