Is that the correct term? Nebraskians? I don't really know. =)

In any case..... I was thinking about visiting your fine state the first week of May. Omaha area. Can't say I'm very familiar with the area, though, and would love to meet up with a few letterboxers if there are any out there. =)

Jumping up and down!!!

Really!!!??! How cool. There are boxers here, some are quiet (not on the boards) but there is a good group. We would love to meet up with you. We are in Lincoln, about 50 miles away, just a short trip down the interstate. Have nothing scheduled that week, so plan on us (Ona Journey, Das Frog and Little Acorn.

All but one (Mandan Heron) of my Nebraska letterboxes, are alive and kicking as of this writing. Papillion has a different stamp in it and several have revised clues. There's also a new box sitting quietly behind a tree in Nebraska City waiting for a visitor. Enjoy! Funhog

Just wanted to say thank you to all of the Omaha planters...we had a fun time running all over town hunting and are coming home with some really beautiful stamps to prove it! Have to say that Omega has been the biggest brain-bender yet but well worth the effort. Summer Outing (at least half of that series anyway) was our favorite stamp...really worth the hunt for that one! The Herkies have some boxes in some great locations. Thanks, again!

Kristian,

While letterboxers are a very friendly bunch, we can easily do an about-face and be downright vicious when it come to protecting our little treasures.

While we welcome newcomers to the "art sport", we are very skeptical of the means by which many of them learn of letterboxing. That is to say: we don't want all that publicity.

Letterboxing is a secretive hobby, one that prizes stealth, cunning and cleverness. Major media advertising usually garners an incredibly harsh response (as happened when Chevy used letterboxing to promote its Suburban SUV).

I would suggest that you reconsider (ix-nay on the etterboxing-lay) including letterboxing in your cross-country game.

I appreciate the effort you are undertaking to improve the health of familes, so I'd like to offer the following encouragement: base your treks and travels on established, well-known activities of this type, such as CBS's The Amazing Race or NBC's Treasure Hunters.

Kristian,

While I applauded your endeavor to eradicate the growing childhood problems of our modern society, your choice of words here lacks in perception.

Getting exercise and enjoying the outdoors with the children is only a bonus of this hobby, the beautiful areas you may never ‘otherwise’ see is the point! It is not done for money, nor ‘air time’, but for “Oh! The places you’ll go”.. (Quote, Dr Seuss)

Are you ‘stealthy’ asking this community to do the ‘work’ for you in arriving at ideas for your ‘modified letterboxing’ idea? If so, the mention of cameras or major media exposure will not get you anywhere, except to have the existing ones to ‘disappear’.

Nature, pure and simple, No Lights, Camera, Action!! They are not found in nature…

Kristian, As the owner of nine long-lived letterboxes in Nebraska, I request that you let me know when you proceed with this project. In the face of a media blitz I will be compelled to take my clues underground or remove the boxes altogether. I am quite certain that they would be put into jeopardy by this sort of campaign. It would be a sad day indeed but do let me know how you decide to proceed. Funhog

*hehe* I think your boxes are safe, Funhog. Amanda and I tried to find two of them when we were in Omaha and never did find the darned things, and we're experienced hog trackers. ;o)

Well, folks -- now that THAT's all behind us somewhat (yipes -- any word, by the way, whether the pseudo-boxing campaign's going to happen and/or when?), and we're heading into the ice-encrusted part of the year (like bagged chicken breasts?)....

Are there enough of us to think about some kind of get-together? I'm technically in Iowa (just across the river from Omaha, though -- closer to Omaha than to anything else in Iowa, in fact.), but I'd be willing to host sometime. Maybe do a little bookbinding or stamp carving or somesuch?

Anyone....?

I know we're a little quiet over here in big red country, but you fellow Omahans...?

Everyone okay after yesterday?

Alcariel and I were out finding a box while the madness was happening, and everyone we know is safe, but man...what a senseless tragedy.

I think I am really the only Nebraskan on the boards every day, I am in Lincoln. Thanks for the post. I was just thinking of it, hard not too. Really hard to understand it all. People in Omaha seem to be reaching out, trying to help, coming together, prayer. He (shooter) went to the same high school as my neice. Yes, senseless.

Which High School? My husband went to Burke. He's still checking in with friends and relatives.

Papillion-LaVista High School, Sarpy County, south of Omaha, a suburb. He had dropped out and got his GED. He was living with his gardian in Bellevue.

Thanks, ona journey. I've heard so many different versions of the story from TV and Radio, I'm not sure of any of the details. I am not from Omaha but know where Bellevue is because my Father-in-law was stationed at the air force base. Such a very sad story all around. We'll be praying!

Apparently, the official story from the Omaha PD is 8 dead, not including the shooter, and six wounded (two critically). The kid left a suicide note that said he was tired of being a burden and would at least be famous now. Then he took an AK-47 into the Von Mawr and randomly killed/injured a whole lot of people in 6 minutes before taking his own life.

I'm glad everyone here is okay, at least physically. All of Omaha's freaking out a bit today (duh), but yes, pulling together.

It's a horrible, horrible thing.

I mentioned before that I'm not *technically* in Nebraska. I might as well be, because I can take a heavy rock on a windy day and throw it inside the state line from here. But technically, it's Iowa.

My question, then, is this: I have about thirty boxes carved over the winter that I want to place. If I placed some of them, oh, say, about eight miles inland-toward-Iowa, would the fact that it's outside of the metro be a deterrent?

I know I have a tendency to go wherever a box is within about a day's drive, but I'm also an obsessed freak, so YMMV.

Just didn't want to place these over here and have them be passed over -- it's a great location, if I say so myself. :)

Yes we would come over. Are you talking about the Hitchcock nature area? Looks like it is just a hop and a skip from I 680. So how soon can you get them planted? This week end? Ha Ha! Just kidding. ; ) Get out there lady and start planting!
