The O Letterbox Tree has survived a visit from a destructive Grinch and is now in a new location.

Also, the Grinch has left a certain calling card at the tree!

I posted this on the talk lists, but for those who don't read them:

The O Letterbox Tree is coming down tomorrow and I just wanted to thank all who visited and especially those who contributed ornaments to the tree: Chunna, Cape Cod Letterboxer, and Mumma & Bunny Boy. It was truly fun and memorable.

Thanks again and I'll see you next Christmas at the tree!

After having succumbed to the spectacular overflooding of the Blackstone River last fall, my Riverbend mystery box went out to sea, so to speak.

I am pleased to announce that I recarved it and replanted it on Friday. It's just waiting for you to come and find it!

Index of Conservation and/or Park Land
Board: State: Massachusetts

Thread Board (disabled)
Hi all ...

I'm starting a little project to catalog all of the conservation and/or park land in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. My intent in undertaking this project is to identify all of the usable, public access land where letterboxes could be placed. The directory would serve as a sort of idea list for placers as well as a listing of neat and interesting places one might enjoy the outdoors, whether it be a public park, forest, sanctuary, preserve, or other such conservation land.

I envision a database that includes the following information:

Name of the Conservation Area or Park
Location (Town)
Managing Authority
Acreage
Whether the land is publicly or privately owned
Whether the land is open to public use
Whether the land has established trails
Other information pertinent to letterboxers (such as restrictions)

Identifying all lands owned by either the federal or state government is easy enough, as the majority of this land is public-use parks (e.g. Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or Borderland State Park run by the Department of Conservation and Recreation). What is challenging is finding, identifying and listing all of the conservation and park land owned by one of Massachusetts 300+ towns or countless Land Trusts, Conservation Commissions, and other foundations and societies that own or manage reserved land.

A preliminary review of association associations (that is, assocations to which other associations belong) such as the Land Trust Alliance or Massachusetts Land Trust Coalition has yield a listing of 877 parcels of land so far -- and I'm certain that there are probably double that many once the list is complete.

Given that large number, developing a complete listing is a daunting project, but one I still wish to accomplish. So, I seeking help. If a couple of us are willing to do a little research to build the database, and then I can find a partner who'll help me develop a database page within my website, I think the end result would be rather useful. Who knows, if the project goes well, perhaps we can expand it to the other New England states.

Although using AQ mail is fine, I'd prefer direct contact to my letterboxing e-mail address: seh-letterbox@comcast.net

Thanks!

Hi

Here is a Left Coaster butting in. If you check the SoCal chatlist and go to links you will find something similar to what you are looking for. These links are set up for California , but I would imagine that there are already links established for Massachusetts. I don't have any idea where to find them.

Sudbury Valley Trustees offering letterboxing prize!

(Crossposted to LbNE talk group)

As many Massachusetts and other area boxers may know, Sudbury Valley
Trustees (SVT), a land trust that owns and protects conservation land
along the Sudbury, Assabet and Concrd Rivers, actively promotes public
use of their land and has placed "official" SVT letterboxes on its
property.

They are now offering a prize (they don't say what) for finding at
least half of the 10 official SVT boxes placed on their property.

They call it the "Letterboxing Challenge" and it will run through
August 31 of this year. Simply find the boxes, collect one of the
green SVT medallions inside and, when you have 5, go to the SVT office
in Sudbury to collect your prize.

More information at http://www.sudburyvalleytrustees.org/page.php?id=120

Figures that I've already found many of the SVT boxes, but there are
still a few to go. Just went after "See-Der Pine Cones" yesterday,
and once again I can highly recommend the SVT boxes ... they are all
EXCELLENT hikes and great finds!!

Want to adopt a box?

I am looking for someone un the Boston area who might like to place and babysit a box for awhile when the "BodyWorlds2" exhibit comes to Boston. I am working on carving it now to place near our museum while the exhibit is here and would love to send it on to the next city when the exhibit moves. It will be in Boston starting in late July and will stay through the new year. I will send on the stamp and journal, the whole box basically, to someone that would like to place it near the museum and then kinda keep an eye on it until the exhibit moves again.

If you are interested, or know someone that might be, please email me at AljanSundance@yahoo.com

Thanks! Happy boxing! Aljan

I just read that there will be a large geocaching gathering at Wendell State forest in Wendell, Ma. tomorrow (Saturday). They are expecting around 300 people to attend and there is even going to be a radio station broadcasting live at the event. I know there are a lot of letterboxes there. Hopefully they will be ok. Those who have boxes in the area may want to check up on them after the event. You can read about it at
http://www.recorder.com/Headlines/today_basic.htm You will need to scroll down to "High-tech geocachers hunt for stashed treasure"

Early this morning on my day off. Lounging lazily flipping channels.
Usual garbage on. Then I hit the local Acess channel for here on Cape Cod.
Its a show I catch now and then. Sometimes has interesting tidbits of info.
The show is called "Tales of Cape Cod" This episode was ...
"Yarmouth Trails"
It was a group of 4-5 Seniors hiking one of my Favorite trails.
The Yarmouth Historical Society Trail.
The would stop and talk about the various features along the trail.
What struck me as so funny. At one stop they were standind less then 6ft from a Letterbox. One of my Favorites (not my plant). It even has a BD.
There was 3 boxes on this trail. One was mine wich turned up Missing recently.
The other two are safe and sound (checked myself).
Its a beautiful, easy, short trail. Boxing or not Its one of my usual hikes.

Looking for adopter for Mansfield MA box

Hey folks,

I have been maintaining Sister Road, Sister Town in Mansfield MA for Leader of the Pack and the Psychokiwis for a few years now.

Since I am spending less and less time in MA, maintenance on this box has become difficult for me.

Is anyone out there willing to adopt/maintain this box?

I am also posting this on LBNA.

Please don't let this box become an orphan!

Warrior Woman,

I'm only in the Mansfield area every other month but if you do not find an adopter I would be willing to adopt the box. There are a couple active planters in that area so I think you will probably hear from one of them.

Hi,
We really like this box and would be willing to maintain it . . . just a little note, it's actually not in Mansfield, MA. Nevertheless, it has been found a lot with very little problem, obviously, and the maintenance wouldn't be difficult! Let us know if you need us!
