It seems there's a letterboxing event happening in Annapolis next month: http://www.hometownannapolis.com/cgi-bin/read/2005/02_07-47/NBH

March 12th from 9 to noon. Anyone know anything about this? I'm kind of curious myself, but it's unlikely I'll be able to check it out myself!

Interesting. And it's at a wildlife sanctuary. I'll give them a call. I'm curious who is organizing it.

go to Yahoo, if you are not registered, register and go to groups and search LBMA (letter boxing mid atlantic) Once you are there go to events and register for the May 14th gathering at Black Hills. If you have any problems, e-mail me at Dovidiotbird@comcast.net. Hope this helps.

Are you the one that e-mailed me about the boxed and was worried if they would fall out of the tree? If so, I took your suggestion and used my limited sewing skills to make burlap bags for them to hang in. THANKS!

Hi, Molly. There is information here at Atlas Quest. Just look for the Event Planner. Scroll down a bit and look on the right-hand side. Click on the Mid-Atlantic Spring Gather for more info.

Did I mention the shocking Tattooed Woman? the mesmerizing fortune teller, Madame Natascha who has just arrived from Eastern Europe? ["Hey Boss, but the Circus is free?" "Quiet you fool!"]

Yea, as I was saying, you will be able to seek us out, planted about the area for a limited time only.

We hope to see you there.

Wonderful to hear from a new letterboxer. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Phineas Boch, Ringmaster of Boch's Circus, the special event letterboxes to be planted for the Spring gather on the 14th, in beautiful, bountiful, boxious, Boyd's, Maryland.

We are gathering acts from around the country, and may I say that so far they are among the most amazing, entertaining, and detailed work that I have ever seen make an impression on this planet.

Please do not let your lack of hand carved stamp keep you inside and away from getting out there on The HUNT. Many of started with um, commercial stamps and worked our way up from there.

Look forward to seeing you at the gather. Pssst, here's a free pass for the sideshow. ["Boss, they's all free!" "Quiet you fool."] Bring your friends.

I am your humble, truly sincere Ringmaster,
Phineas Boch
For more information see the event calendar here on AtlasQuest and for more of the general information may I recommend letterboxing.info PTB

I started with a store bought, the Doubtful Guest. I couldn't carve my way out of a wet paper bag back then.

I can still hardly draw my own name.

Hello
We are grandparents who will be visiting Baltimore with our grandbabies 2 months and 2 years. Their mom will be in a business meeting. September 10 - 15. My husband and I will take care of the children and visit our cousins and uncle but we had hoped to get in a little boxing. We will be staying near the harbor and wonder if you could suggest boxes that might be convenient to the area and possible with babies.

We live near Stone Mt. Georgia and have been boxing just a little over a year. We love the activity p11,f 180 ex 43. Any ideas you could give us woulld be helpful. We expect to have a rental car. Thank you Gardening Granny and Paw Paw

Yesterday I dropped in on a workshop hosted by Lynette, the park naturalist. She presented letterboxing to 4 families with young children. Handouts included copies of the Smithsonian article, the 2002 Washington Post article and clues to nearby letterboxes. The kids made "stamps" with foam cutouts and decorated little logbooks. I was asked to share my logbook and answer questions. Then they all went out to find the one remaining letterbox in the park.

Lynette and the on-duty ranger were very enthusiastic about the hobby and encouraged the placement of more letterboxes in the park, no advance permission required.

Oh...and I gave a huge plug for Atlas Quest!

Wow, we almost went just for that reason! Now do you think that would apply to meadowside and locust grove and croyden creek since she tends to work those places too. That opens up like ALL of the greenland around. Do you think we should tell them when we place one there just to be polite?

Hiya!

Rank, utter, total newbie here! The only paraphenalia I've yet acquired is a logbook... which I bought for my sister (who first told me of letterboxing), but have decided to keep. It's a Strathmore field logbook, spiral bound, unlined at the top of the pages, but with several lines at the bottom of each page to record information. Headed for craft shop tonight to buy carving supplies... hope to get out before Christmas!!

Hope, too, to see more MD events next year!

Ick! a spiral bound logbook?

Ok, that sounded meaner that I was aiming for. Sorry, I hate spiral books. I've found after long use, the spiral spine tends to begin to bend and twist, and that starts to rip the pages of your logbook as you go along and turn them.

I started my letterboxing with one of those, and hated it as I went along. I far prefer a nice, solid, book-type binding.

That all aside, welcome to the hobby! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun.
(and good, you're making sure to buy another book for your sister- I was gonna say, that sounded mean! :D)

I'm obviously not as hard on my books as you - I prefer spiral bound books for durn near everything - they fold flat to write in, and only one page is visible at a time, e.g. half the footprint of a hard-bound book. Re-binding them is an easy option if you're hard on them, or need to add pages - any office supply store can assist you.

Judging from your reaction, tho - perhaps it's best if I let Sissy choose her own logbook - she works in a teacher supply store and gets a huge discount on such items, anyway.

akindofmagick
(with spiral bound flight, scuba, and fibre-art logbooks and travel journals, all neatly stored in cases to protect page edges - and very happy with them)

You go girl. Pay no attention to that man...in NY? (Just kidding CQ.)

I've been letterboxing since 2002 and am on my 4th spiral-bound logbook. I too like the way pages lay flat for better impressions. I'm still looking for one with the perfect paper, however.

Welcome, akindofmagick. Whereabouts in MD are you, and would we know your sister?

Hi and welcome to letterboxing from your neighbor to the north in Pennsylvania. I have been boxing for three years and all I ever have used are spiral books. I have found that they open the whole way and are easy to stamp into. In addition, I always use the hard covered spirals, and I am able to fold the cover back flat to give additional support when I am stamping in. Give it a try without fear and if you don't like it or if your pages DO begin to fall out, you can always do as many of us do and cut the stamps out and place them into a permanant logbook which only travels along to events.
