Now Kentuckians, and even transplants just love to talk, so it is quite a surprise to find this thread so silent. Hi all you Kentuckians and anyone else that happens to stop by.

Louisville's got 2 new letterboxes out as of the beautiful Saturday we just had. One is expected to go MIA very quickly. A third drive by will be placed out soon on Shelby campus or at Seneca Park or maybe Iroquois Park. Out of deference, I'm not touching Cherokee Park, so as not to infringe on the box there.

Stephanie, are you here? What's the latest with your Riverview box? Robin? What about yours? Last time I was at your boxes (admittedly a long time ago - last May), both were there. Sorry to hear about your loss!

All others are missing, I do believe. And upon request, Jeff did take down his clues for the Have A Nice Day box.

I blow at carving stamps, but would certainly love to plan a get together later this summer, if anyone is interested.

TTFN

I was planning on being in Louisville in a few weeks to box. Which ones are still there? I had clues printed out from several months ago, so I guess I'll start over.

Cheryl,

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I haven't been in town long enough to go run the circuit and I'm hoping you're not hitting town this weekend. I had thought I would by now, but leaving work when I have been in town has been after the sun goes down. Again, my apologies.

Bubbles Blue and Pink Elephant were there yesterday.
Riverview - I got an email from the boxer a few weeks ago that she had pulled it due to construction.
Thanatopis - Its in a very pleasant park not too far from Bubbles, so even if you go and don't find a score, its still a nice area. Right now its listed MIA
Louisville 2 - The first of the two in Cherokee Park will probably be there forever and last time I went, I didn't find the second one. That's not to say it isn't there.

Again, sorry for not visually confirming Louisville Letterboxes.

Company's coming in for the weekend and then its out of town again for 5 days. Whew!

I'm wishing some other people would place boxes locally, but glad for the ones we have in Louisville. Good luck and happy hunting!

Thanks for the update. I was planning on coming up there in a few weeks, or at least when it's warm and relatively dry. I've done the boxing at 25 degrees - and 40 degrees and all-day rain - and I'm willing to wait!

Cheryl,

Here's the final update. 60 degrees and clear skies today. Wunnerful, just wunnerful. :-)

Louisville in Cherokee park is there. I didn't check the second one - it's so beautiful today that every dog and its owner is out enjoying the weather.

Pink Elephant has been returned. Someone sent in a postcard saying that they thought it was someone's "stash" and if they got into letterboxing, they would return it. Some nail biting until I could be in town long enough to check that box!

Bubble Blue is there.

Thanatopsis is gone. The bricks that once covered the spot are scattered far and wide. Bummer. Nice place, even with blanket forming a shelter.

Why don't you come plant one here too?

Have a fun week and happy hunting when you come down this way.

Well Cheryl, despite your being stuck at home, I'm going to say that I was glad to hear it. I would hate to think that you were the person standing there watching as I got my husband's durango stuck in the mud taking a short cut into a box that wasn't there.

My family is going to Coal Grove OH in a few weeks and we'd like to hit as many letterboxes as we can. If you know of any KY boxes near that area, could you point us in their directions?

Sorry I can't answer anything about boxes in KY in that area - good luck!

On another note, thanks Siddal for replanting your Thanatopsis here in Louisville. Didn't get the Durango stuck out there this time - so what that I employed a what must have been a 48-point turn. Yay! Someone from MO beat me out there, but it's looking great so far.

Pink Elephant was destined to be a short-lived box.  The box was planted 2/5/05, hidden in full few of an open field, at the edge of a tree line inside a stump that rose about 18 inches from the ground.  The very first postcard received from the box stated that the person didn't know what possessed them to look there, but they took the whole box thinking it was someone's stash.  The last line said that if they decided to get into letterboxing, they might return it.

I had little hope.

Two days later I got another card dated after the first.  So, I went over to check on the box and sure enough, the first person was kind enough to return it.

Then came the geocachers.  Indeed, one "Mama Hen" moment checking on the state of affairs netted a "Boston to Austin" keychain making its way from one city to another.  Now, I don't really mind sharing the box with geocachers, but I thought the person listing it could at least let me know.  Thanks to the comments about the situation posted here, I got in touch with the geocacher of a nearby location who was very friendly and added that she didn't know that there were any stumps in the park, did I haul it into the park?

Today I headed over to the park to add the "This is not a Geocache" message, only worded nicer than that, forgetting completely that the Lyndon Fair was this weekend.  The yard signs posted on every corner between my house and there weren't a tip off at all.  "Okay" I think.  I'll just snag it and go, bringing it back later.  My false trail message in a film canister was hanging out in its baggy in full view.  I rehid that.  Electricity trailers for a Scrambler ride were parked near where I needed to be.  A circuitous route brings me to the discovery that the area is not behind barricades.  The area is open.

So is the area where the stump used to be!

"I've got to stop hiding them in trees." I'm thinking, knowing that The Haunting box got wiped out in Laurens, SC when TLC's Town Haul came through and added an amphitheater, taking down a very dead and very old tree.  In fact, they kept showing that clip of the bulldozer taking it down over and over.  As if they knew I was cringing each time the bulldozer struck the old sentry.

Good news!  On the other side of the tree, covered in a few sticks was my box!    I cannot believe it was still there.  Who knows how long it was out in the open and why the workers didn't just 86 the box?

Thanks to Maria, Grant & Aaron of Louisville, Beth, Trey, Micaela & Danielle of Atlanta for trying to hide it back for me!    Glad Pinkie was your first find - and may your future finds not be so apparent.  :-)

Hi everyone,

What a year it has been since I've posted here last. A year? Geez. Since then, we had a gathering here in January with another one being planned for January 20, 2007. Many people carved stamps for the gathering and permanent planting, which increased the number of Louisville boxes tremendously - from 5 to a lot. Thanks to them and new letterboxers!!!!

Also, I'm already soliciting for stamp donations for the gathering in January '07 for temporary placement on that day and permanent placement after that. Louisville's a big place...and there's also Southern Indiana just across the river to think about. ;-)

Anyway, some stamps of ours have been rotated around the city to new spots and to old spots held by other stamps. For instance, Bubbles Blue is a different stamp now, and I think Zoo Box 5 finally found a permanent place after 4 different locations. Also, it appears that boxes are staying in place finally and not going MIA. That's great news!

KY Chameleon is out seeding the Cave City area! That's more great news for Central KY! With the most recent Dinosaur World plant, there are 3 there. I'm hoping to add something for the 'See The Seven Legged Calf' display soon. Also to Kentucky Down Under and Horse Cave. One day, Bowling Green...one day.

Spoiler alert

What follows is a list of what is where in Louisville area. If part of the fun for you is printing out the clues and then sorting them by park or proximity, then please stop reading now. An out of towner asked for this - really! There are two boxes I'm uncertain about and were left off this list.

No real theme again. It's a Winter BBQ, so if you wanted to do something wintery, then terrific. Propane snowflakes? Mittens on fire? A snowman with a spatula in hand in front of a grill? Something from your neck of the woods i.e. IN visits KY. I'm delighted you're considering it all! Y'know, that Happy Holidays stamp is waiting to be found and I think Fleur de Liz is still where it was that day in my house.

Also, thanks to Penguin Patrol who has already stepped up to carve an event stamp so we'll have one this time. :-) You guys all rock.

I went out this morning to plant the next box in the Tom Sawyer Island series and I discovered that Harper's Mill was missing. I checked the closest garbage can and found the stamp and logbook inside (wet, but otherwise fine). I will put it back out mid-July, and hopefully get the next box planted as well.

The Liz Factor, are you reading? Tortue aka Zoo Box 5 got swept out to sea in the bastille day flooding. So did Yoga Girl, planted just for out of towners on Friday morning, washed away before it was ever found. The French influence in my life chuckles at the liberte'-ness of Tortue on Bastille Day. What a nightmare of destruction in our parks. mud covering vegetation up to four feet high and all those bridges at Brown and Beargrass covered in silt, sledge, and debris!!!

Teepsman is recarving some of the zoo boxes now, including #3, which I hear second hand got chewed, mangles, spit out and spit up. Poor little snakey. Y'know, as a box owner, I'd appreciate it if the findee would shoot me an email stating such.

Two new boxes laid down this weekend - watch for them. :-)

Also, my Veterans Memorial letterbox (which went missing in October) is now available in virtual form on Atlasquest.

I am a native of Eastern Kentucky and am making my first trip home in five years. I have followed the Jefferson County discussions on this board but would like to hear about the hinterland, say east of I-75. What is going on out there? There are many wild and hidden places in the region but a real paucity of boxes.

I look forward to planting at least two. If you live or wander in Eastern Kentucky, please drop me a note.

Dear Kentucky Letterboxers:

Earlier this month I wrote you about the dearth of letterboxes in Eastern Kentucky. I have taken one small step to remedy this by planting a box on a mountaintop near Berea. “Aikaterina” is a large scale, hand-carved stamp based on a 15th century German woodcut. The hike is pleasant, and the box well hidden.

While in Kentucky, I also found Team Tired Feet’s “Maggofin County Founders’ Day,” the first to find this box since its planting more than two and a half years ago. It is a high quality “box” and does not deserve to be neglected.

Please let me know that you all are reading this.

Yours, Aram Garoghlanian

Hi!

I noticed your box - I'm not technically a KY Letterbox, as I live in NC. However, I grew up in Berea, and still have family in the area. I"ll get to your box - it may be later rather than sooner. I'm very familiar with the location, and it sounds great!

I hope to plant some boxes around Lexington KY. I also lived in Harlan, KY for a while, but rarely get back to the area - but if I do - I'll try to plant!

Thanks!!
