I think It's okay as long as the box isn't placed too close to (or on) someones plot. I placed a box in a hollow tree at an 1800's burial ground.

I love old cemeteries, the older the better. Visiting them brings respect and honor to those who have been neglected and forgotten. I look forward to visiting your cemetery boxes soon!

It's about time the whole state of Indiana stayed on the same time year round! =)

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=583&e=9&u=/nm/20050516/od_nm/life_time_dc

And I always thought Arizona was weird for being one of the few states that didn't do Daylight Savings (which I'd love to see happen nation wide, but it is confusing when an odd-ball state goes against the grain). But Indiana's system.... *rolling eyes* Now that was just screwed up. *shaking head* =)

I agree! But hold on to your hats, we are waiting to see what time zone we will adopt. My preference is Central Time.

But there is another state besides Arizona not observing DST! Is it Hawaii?

You should read up on College Corner, Indiana - half the town is in Ohio, the other half in Indiana. Even the basketball gym is split down the center. If we adopt central time, does the shot clock add or subtract one hour? Some Hoosiers do have a sense of humor about it all.

I'm not sure. Arizona I've had to deal with before--especially when I worked at Intel and half our group was in Arizona. I needed to know where they were at so I'd know if they were out for lunch if I called or something. (Which is why I thought it was annoying they didn't go with most of the country in terms of DST, even though I'm not a big fan of it myself.) I've never traveled to or worked with anyone in Hawaii.

It doesn't really matter to me which time zone Indiana goes toward--I'd just like the time to be consistent throughout the state! =)

Poor cows... *shaking head*

I grew up in Saskatchewan (only Canadian province to not do DST) and then did grad school in Indiana, so I never felt out of place. I only got confused when I moved somewhere where I had to change my clocks twice a year. Talk about messing with nature--moving time around. The cows know better! ;-)

Saskatchewan has *two* border towns, one on each side, that straddle timezones, and for half the year the province is on Alberta time and the other half, it's on Manitoba time. Easy as pie!

What's really crazy is Newfoundland.... Atlantic time (Nova Scotia, PEI, etc.) is an hour earlier than the US Eastern, and Nwfld time is 1/2 hour earlier than that!

Good thing letterboxes are time independent....

My, you were busy!

FYI - anyone going to Rush and Fayette Counties - Rushville, Connersville and all the rural areas will take some time to navigate, and if you want to savor some of the lovely locations, you will need to allow more time. I plotted all the boxes and my route ahead of time. I've been down in those areas several times and I still have some to pick up.

Thanks for the info. It was getting late on Sunday and we were drifting further away from Louisville and the Rushville clues sounded like some I should do by myself.

The weekend was for us. We had a great time. Teeps is not a letterboxer, but went along gamely for some easier ones to reach. I was hoping to hook him into it somewhat by letting him be clue reader, finder, compass reader or whatever with each box. Along the way, we saw some really neat slices of Americana, interacted with a deer and its baby, listened to the rain patter on the canopy of leaves and the walnuts falling from the trees, opened a letter box full of baby roaches. Unfortunate on that one, because it was raining we were sitting in the car and I dropped the box in revulsion. "Thank you for infesting my car..." He did laugh later over it.

The last letterbox of the weekend, we found in Shelbyville at a terrific little park in the rain where we through encased walnuts falling from the trees into the rapidly moving stream. As we drove off, he said that if that's what the letterboxes areas could be, then he wouldn't mind doing more like that one.

We were supposed to go to St. Louis this past weekend, but switched at the last second to go to Indy. In the 18 years I've been going to Indy with him to visit his family and our friends, we haven't been to many of those areas. Neither of us realized there was a museum at the monument, never been to the river walk area or the zoo & gardens. Teeps has been wanting to go through eagle creek for a while and he told stories about attending Park Tudor and how the school would bring them across the street to Marott Park for field trips. So, you see, these were all very nice to do!

Hello, Hoosiers!

Once again I'll be tromping around the Hoosier state before the week is out. Unfortunately, it's for yet another funeral. My 95 (or there-abouts) year old grandfather passed away yesterday.

However, unlike my previous trip for my grandmother's funeral, I plan to stick around a bit longer this time around. Help my dad clear out the old house (I'll be the "muscle" as my dad put it) and all that. Legend has it the basement of my grandparent's place is, well, legendary. I've never seen it myself (wasn't anything down there of interest to me), but I remember hearing about that basement since I was a little kid.

I figure I'll be in Indiana for the better part of a week at least, and might be able to make some time along the way to meet some of you local boxers somewhere along the way if anyone is interested. I'll probably be flying into and out of Indianapolis and staying at a hotel in Terre Haute (at least part of the time), though neither of those facts are confirmed as of yet.

Anyhow, this is mostly just a head's up for now since I don't have many of the details pinned down as of yet. It's not often I get out to Indiana--despite my track record for this year. When I know more, I'll let you know.

Oh, I didn't mean it to sound that way at all. Hunting season? I assumed (not smart of me) that all your new stamps would be in cemeteries, and from what I remember the hunters shouldn't be that close! I have been looking at getting a blaze orange vest, but dh will not entertain the idea of me having a need for one of them. "You can go when you don't need one of those." We had a similar conversation when I purchased my first roll of camo-tape.

We know who the boss of me is ...

How many times has dh or anyone else made camo tape jokes? Ours started when we couldn't find it in the aisle...while we were standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DISPLAY. lolol. The joke continues at home too.

Never gets old.

We're heading Indianapolis way Friday for "Whad'ya Know" on Saturday morning. This gives me the chance to pick up Artdog's second stamp at Eagle Creek, since we did do the bird's nest, but did not read the last paragraph, due to interacting with a deer and its little dear.

I've made it to Indiana and am currently staying in Cloverland, between Brazil and Terre Haute. I'll be leaving on October 25th from the train station in Indianapolis.

So that's where things are at the moment. I have to leave at something like 5:00 in the morning, so I might choose to go out to Indianapolis the night before, but details are still fuzzy. =)

But if anyone finds themselves wandering around the Terre Haute/Brazil/Cloverland area for the next week or so, look me up. Maybe I'll even put you to work helping to clear out the infamous basement at my grandfather's place. Which, legend has it, is now haunted. ;o)

Ryan...Green Tortuga....am curious about your connection with Indiana. I'm a Hoosier originally and was disapppointed that your ClabberGirl box was gone...since I was new to letterboxing and was going to Terre Haute.

This past summer I planted a box at Merom...south of Terre Haute. I haven't heard from anyone that it has been found. That was the first box I ever planted. If you have time, you might look for it.....I'd be honored!!

Zoe & Ryan ... look for some action on your boxes at the end of this month. Hoosier Honey Bee and I will be hunting this Friday somewhere in Indiana, probably north. I plan to hit Shades SP and your box at the end of the month.

Hoosier Honey Bee said she'd like to meet as well. I can probably get to the Amtrak station before you head to Chicago, unless it is at some really late or really early am hour. I will be out of touch Tuesday, Wed, and Thursday, but I wll get back online Thursday evening and then again Friday night.

Quote Ryan...Green Tortuga....am curious about your connection with Indiana.

My dad was born and raised in Indiana, so I have lots of family there. I'm here now because my grandfather died and I attended his funeral and will be helping my dad get rid of many of my grandfather's possessions. He's infamous for never throwing anything away and there's a LOT to be thrown out. I even found an Indianapolis phone book from October of 1976 two days ago! Never know when one of those might came in handy, huh? =)

On another note, I also have learned that my grandfather had a subscription to Smithsonian magazine since at least the 1980s. So I've been keeping an eye open for a certain April of '98 issue, but so far we haven't found it. He's got probably a dozen different magazines that cover several decades and they're spread out all over the house in no particular order. I still hope to get myself a collector's item out of the mess, though!

On another note, just because I think this is morbidly interesting.... My grandfather was born in 1908 and would have turned 97 next month. He was born in a house that my great-great-grandfather built for my great-grandfather. After my great-grandfather died, my grandfather inherited the house and lived in it until the day he died. He died probably about ten feet from where he was born--almost 97 years later. Is that kind of spooky or what? So I'm trying to convince everyone in my family now that the house is haunted. =) Late at night I've been trying to scare my sisters who were sleeping in his old bed moaning, "Get out of my house....." Lots of fun. I bet Grandfather Carpenter is laughing his butt off at the idea. =)

My train pulls out of Indianapolis at around 5:00am, so that probably won't work. That's part of the reason I'd like to try getting out there the day before--perhaps meet up with some boxers the night before. (And if someone has a place I could crash the night of the 24th who can give me a ride to the train station in Indy at 5:00am the next morning, let me know!)

Quote look for some action on your boxes at the end of this month.

I've already planted one box in the area, though I haven't posted the clues yet. I'll be planting some more before I leave as well. So be sure to look up the latest clues near Terre Haute before heading out!

Cool......sort of hard to have a box that is 600 miles away and can only check on it about once a year.....since I am in South Carolina. I have only been letterboxing since about last May, but I find it addictive. Going to the Tarheel gathering next weekend and looking forward to that. If you find my box, please let me know.

Indiana Trivia....

I recently learned that Indiana is creating a 150-mile, across-the-state trail from Terre Haute to some other town on the eastern side of the state. It's not done yet, but when it is, I'll have to think about thru-hiking it. =) Although my aunt says there have already been six murders on the part that already has been built and would I be carrying a gun?! Okay, if that's true, perhaps I won't thru-hike the WHOLE thing and just go around the bad parts of towns it goes through. What kind of idiot planner would run a trail through parts of towns THAT bad anyhow?

Also just learned yesterday that Jimmy Hoffa and Orville Redenbacher were both born in Brazil, Indiana, all of about six miles from my grandpa's place in Cloverland. How 'bout that! Can't believe I didn't know that all this time! I've already carved stamps for both of them, though I haven't planted the boxes yet. Maybe tomorrow.

And you know, Indiana is just full of surprises. I never heard of the Covered Bridge Festival before and learned on the news tonight that two MILLION people are expected to attend it this year! I went to it last Sunday and there were certainly a lot of people. I remember going to that location in years past to this dinky little town of Mansfield with a population of, what I imagined, had to number about 20 people. Okay, maybe a little larger. But I'm just friggen amazed that they have this Covered Bridge Festival that two million people will visit during the ten days it runs out in the middle of NOWHERE!

Wish I could hide a covered bridge stamp (there's a lot of covered bridges in these parts!), but there's just way too many people around to do that. Ain't gonna happen on this trip!

Let's see..... And today I got to burn tons and tons of trash. I was a real pyro. =) My biggest fire ever! Flames shooting a dozen feet into the air! Wind gusts blowing the flames all over the place! I even had to stop throwing wood on the fire when it got so big I couldn't get close enough to throw the wood on accurately at times. That was pretty cool. Back in California, you know, there's not a whole lot of places where you can burn your trash like there is here in Cloverland. I stopped adding wood at about 4:00 this afternoon, and even though it's after midnight now, I can still see the glowing embers from that fire. Up until about an hour ago, I could even still see some small flames coming from it. Lots of fun! =) Now I smell like a campfire too!

Hi Ryan

Not the best occasion to be visiting perhaps, but is it *really* pretty there right now? My partner and I haven't been back since we left Bloomington for SW Ontario two and a bit years ago and we really miss it sometimes. Maybe we'll wait a little while longer and let the boxes accumulate a tad more ;-)

The cross-state trail looks interesting: http://www.indianatrails.org/NRHT/
Maybe it cuts through a really dangerous part of Indy? Otherwise, I'm not sure how rough Brazil and Shelbyville, etc. are! ;-)

Enjoy yourself!

Okay, looks like I'll be getting into Indianpolis on Monday and leaving VERY early in the morning on Tuesday, but I should be around Monday afternoon/evening if anyone wants to get together for a mini-meet. =)

Looking around the web, I found an Old Spaghetti Factory which I figure I'll have to eat at for lunch or dinner. Anyone up for meeting me there? Looks like they're open for lunch between 11:30 and 2:00, then for dinner between 5:00 and 10:00. I'm figuring most of you are working stiffs and dinner would probably be easier. Perhaps 6:00 or so?

Hopefully I'll be able to meet up with a couple of you at other times during the day, but I've written you individually about that. You know who you are. ;o)

While driving the 25 hours from Dallas, TX to Buffalo, NY one year, the Highlander and I got a little goofy and started making a list of all the do's and don'ts we learned from listening to my Sounds of the 70's CDs. The list is posted here at http://www.geocities.com/dasprite222/jukebox.htm. I'm sure you'll recognize most of these as the gospel truth, just as we did, but see if you know the songs!

We also created a stamp series dedicated to the list and are looking for folks to hide and adopt a box in all 50 states. You don't have to create a box for us, just take in one of ours. In exchange, we'll also send you our Life Lessons From the Jukebox PLB to stamp into. Some of these have already been done as stamps, but if you're interested in any of them for your state, contact us before signing up for the ring here http://www.atlasquest.com/lboxes/postalring/showinfo.html?gRingId=33

Hope to hear from you soon!
