We are going on a 7 day cruise to Alaska September 17-24th.

we will be visiting Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway...

does anyone know of any LB's in these places that are easy to get to from the docks??

Help would be appreciated.... we hate to not find at least one on our trip :)

AK Homeschoolmommy might be able to help you, but remember that she lives in Anchorage. Juneau cannot be reached by simply driving there--you've got to get there by plane or boat. Besides that, there is the distance--Skagway, which is the nearest of the three to Anchorage, is 800 miles away; Ketchikan, the farthest away, is over 1000 miles away. People forget that Alaska is so large--if you lay it out over the lower 48 states, it covers about 2/3 of the entirety. (I grew up in interior Alaska, but was able to visit some of the southeast, which is why I'm sounding like such a know-it-all.)

Anyway, I just took a look at the clues listed here on AQ for these cities, and it looks like there is one in Skagway that is listed as "This is an easy walk from the ship docks." Sounds like a sure thing! The name of that one is "Liberty for All."

For the rest, your best bet might be to do a little bit of looking at some of the online maps at Google or Mapquest and compare it to the names of things in the clues. If there's some way that you think I might assist you, too, in addition to whatever help you can get from AK HSM, let me know.

Don't know of any LB's, but there is a path up Mount Juneau that I hiked while on a cruise and it would be a great place for planting. You'll have to rely on the kindness of strangers to maintain it, but I'm sure any local boxers would be happy for the new box.

Oh I wish there were more letterboxers in Alaska, there are a few of us, but it would be like driving to Texas as far flung as we are. Anyone wanna move here?

Sad and lonely in Alaska.

Cause my hubby hates letterboxing.

Poor Alaska, HSM, I sorta know how you feel. We are the only ones in town, but we have boxers in neighboring towns at least. Why don't you do like I do and become a letterboxing evangelist. I drive my friends crazy talking about it and carve them personal stamps whether they want them or not. I have converted a few. On All Saint's Day I hid stamps around the house for our friends to find. We had a letterboxing birthday party for my son in June. And I have an agreement with the local Community Center to teach a letterboxing workshop in a couple of months. I'm hoping to get a few newbies going that way. You could talk to your local paper about running an interest story about it (though I haven't had any luck there). And pray :) At least you have the internet community! Can you imagine the loneliness even 20 years ago?

Chin up!

I had to laugh when I read this. I have been boxing since Jan of 05. I have done most of these things (with the exception of the newspaper, I'm always a little leery of that). I think that with the help of Colls we kind of started the craze in Spokane, WA. So where I go there I plant.

i feel your pain dear heart. there is no one but me here in Kodiak. I have talked about it to anyone who will listen. LOL In fact i have a plan to introduce my Red Hat Ladies to it this month as part of our gathering. I promise this coming spring i will spend a whole week on the mainland searching for your letterboxes. i was coming over last weekend but minus 5 degrees held me off. do you have any indoors? Thankfully we have virtuals. and the whole winter we can carve and make journals and come to this website.

Ahoy..yes i did visit your letterboxes. I meant to email you and thank you but i was not at a computer to do that. i got home a week ago and was going to email everybody whose box i found. but you beat me too it. LOL
what a great place to stop. i was on my way to nevada and stopped. i can't believe HSM is your daughter. i love your stamp.
Tell me what you think of this idea.
we are very limited living here in Kodiak Alaska. as you well know from your daughter no one ever hunts here. so i thought for our RED HAT gathering in March i would do a scavanger hunt for letterboxes. My society is RED HAT CHILI PEPPERS
I would mail the first clue to them to go to a bar and have some beverages and at that Bar they get their "journal" i am making especially for this event. The first stamp is "R E D" with a hat. i'm thinking of making 2 stamps. one the letters RED and a hat. THEN THEY GET ANOTHER CLUE TO A RESTAURANT (OOPS CAPS) at the restaurant they get the Stamp letter "H A T" and another hat. maybe some appetizers. then to a coffee place for dessert and the word "C H I L I" and another clue back to the first place so that they will be by thier cars and that stamp would be Letter "P E P P E R S" and yet another hat stamp. I would also take a bunch of photos. on one side of the journal would be a place for the photos and on the other the stamps.

Than i figured at some time in my future i would take all the hat stamps i carved and make a pilgrimage to Hataquarters and visit Queen Ruby. i'm sure somewhere around there i can find a place to do a series. Do you know of anyone who has done something like this for the redhatters?

What do you think? Wanna come and help? I have no exact plans or a time line but some time in the future.

no sorry no room for 4. we do have an empty lot where you could put tents up. we used to have a 6 bedroom 4 bath house but have downsize to a 682 sq ft home. yikes. all my letterboxing stuff is in one drawer 18" x 18" not too mention all my other crafts. ass for the carving issue. i just practice and it seems to be alright. from reading the boards you would think its tough but its not really. however my first ones were crude. just start carving. I find i need real really good natural light. that helps. do come next summer. my friend soen the street has a lovely B & B that can sleep a family fine.

Anyone want to carve the state tree for one of those Index card postal rings?
You don't have to let go of your stamp, just stamp it on 50- 4 by 6 index cards along with your stamp and a state designation, and you will get a packet back of all the state trees!

Hello Alaska Letterboxers!
I am Cherokee Rose 2 from Illinois. I am a 4th grade teacher and this year my class is participating in a project called "The Great Mail Race!" We are looking for teachers in every state who would be interested in learning about students in other states through a questionnaire and letter writing experience. If you know of a school in Alaska or a teacher you think might be interested, please email me here at AQ or at kbarnett@glenview34.org.
Thanks so much!

Ooohhh! Maybe we can come to Alaska, do some homeschooling (FIELD TRIP!!!) and letterboxing. :-) We've never been to Alaska. My husband just left I.T. to teaching high school Math in a small public school so maybe some summer we can get up there.

My husband isn't as keen on LBing as I am, although he shares what it is with people, but he enjoys the hikes we've found.

There are a couple of die hard Letterboxers here..
Anchorage has more than Kodiak. There are now 3 families that box here in Kodiak. WAHOO.
In Anchorage there's a least a dozen. The good thing is in the summer you can box till at least 2am. Really. In Fairbanks you can box all night long. Well maybe not at dawn/dusk which is about 1/2 hour long. But i still think you could find the boxes in that light.

Come on up
