I think I'll join you here as we get American visitors on our UK board. Lets face it I never have been shy about posting on other boards :-D

So when are we having a gathering? You've got to give me some notice, it takes time to swim across. It's bitterly cold this time of the year so I will need to cover myself in 4 layers of that thick goose fat. I don't think there will be many men from the singles board on the look out for my arrival LOL

I was reading a book by Nora Roberts (very educational) and it was set in Alaska. They ate this "candy" made out of a thin layer of whale meat with a thicker layer of blubber. Then, I finished the book and a couple of days later this Alaskan lady was on Oprah and she had some (Oprah didn't eat it). So, she said that they ate this to keep them warmer, I think.

So, my point, oh yeah, maybe you should eat some of this before you head over here. And, you should come to Texas because it's warmer here (most of the time, except this last week, it's been really cold).

I found this board looking for the stupid question board. Back to looking.

Maybe it's yuck, maybe it's not, but, oddly enough, this sounds like bacon. Maybe it tastes like it when properly smoked!

Mmmmmm... whale bacon.... ugrhrgugurghgugugugggg.... (sorry for the bad Homer Simpson impersonation)

You are right, the 'thicker layer of blubber' distracted me from noticing 'thin layer of whale meat'.

Also I think cooked would be different to uncooked.

I'm thinking the whale blubber is actually smoked (or preserved in some curing process--salted?), akin to smoked salmon and develops a caramel-y flavor due to the preservatives added during the smoking process. I can't imagine it could be any worse than alligator or scorpions that many other cultures eat. It also serves a purpose, too, in helping to add a layer of 'insulation' to the people ingesting it who need all the help they can get in surviving extremely cold temperatures. OR--because they eat the whale blubber candy in a cold climate perhaps their taste buds are deadened to it because of the sheer cold? Sort of like why ice cream makers have to add tons more sugar/sweeteners to ice cream (or other cold treats) to ensure that it still tastes sweet despite its being so cold. Ever have melted ice cream or popsickles? It's almost sickeningly sweet to the point where I can't stand it (that says a lot coming from one with a bonafide sweet tooth!).

Is there anybody walking in the WalkAmerica walk near them? If so, would you be interested in carving a stamp commerating the event and then doing a postal exchange with other states at the end of the walks? If so please send me an email through AQ.

Letterboxing in National Parks

Just as an FYI, I got a message from the authorities in the Great Smoky Mountains NP saying they've confiscated three boxes they found there listed on AQ and to delete the boxes since they were planted illegally.

On the plus side, the park ranger wrote:

Quote It is illegal to locate a cache within the park unless authorization has been granted through a Special Use Permit.
None of the three letterboxes has such a permit.

So it actually sounds like letterboxing in the Smoky Mountains NP actually *IS* okay as long as you get a Special Use Permit. I don't know what you have to do or who to talk to to get one, but if you want to plant a box in a national park, it might be worth asking around for.

I wonder if these guys stamp in first?

Well..while I don't have any in Smoky Mtn. NP...I definitely edited on of my boxes....

If you're gonna' do this...I guess you have to be careful how you provide the clue....

Preferably, somewhere other than AQ. I don't much enjoy being contacted by land owners complaining about illegally planted letterboxes.

Seriously, there's plenty of land out there where it's not illegal to point. If people use that, they don't have to be "sneaky" about who gets clues and their boxes can live long, happy lives. It's a good thing. *nodding*

Quote You think thdey'd have more to do like stampin' out forest fires or interrupting people skinny dipping than ruining the fun of letterboxers.

Why would we want them interrupting people while skinny dipping? I'm okay with people who want to skinny dip. =) Even stampin' out forest fires isn't always a good thing. Forest fires are a normal part of the forest's life cycle. As long as no property or people are in the way, I say let it burn! =)

Now if they started cracking down on those idiots that feed the wildlife, I'd be okay with that. *nodding*

I think most people feel more comfortable talking on their state boards. The country boards get more action when there's not state boards available. Just look at the United Kingdom board! Yak! Yak! Yak! =)

Hey, I know, let's keep it a secret and then we can have non flame conversations here.

I was reading yesterday's then had to actually work ???? So, I lost my place and it was right at the apology post. I've got to find it and finish it. It's kind of like a car wreck. You don't want to look, but you can't help yourself.

Quote what's an apology board?

I don't know the answer to that, but we were talking about a post that was started by a fairly new person about clue writing and it turned into a major flame war and it was just ugly. I had said that I had to stop reading and it was at the post where the gentleman was apologizing and I didn't know if I could find the thread again to finish reading it. So, it wasn't a board it was a post.

I hope that clears it up for you.

Quote So, it makes you wonder if the apology was sincere at all, or if the whole thing was just a game or joke to that person.

I, luckily, didn't see the other post. Of course by other board, if you mean another site, then of course I didn't see it. But, I agree, sometimes I wonder if people don't 'say' things just to start a flame war. I, one time, commented on LisaScenic's blog about parking in handicap, with a temporary sticker. This 'anonymous' person comes back and said such hateful things about me. I was shocked. But, then I thought "S/he's not worth it." So, I didn't continue the argument. But, still today, month's later, it bothers me. After that, I stopped commenting for the most part.

Quote Personally, I'd rather have a short but sweet and friendly answer to a post of mine, even if it's a simple "I agree" or an opposing view such as, "I disagree", rather than a flame war....

I agree. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you don't like someone's opinion, go on. Is it really worth arguing over and perhaps causing someone to leave the boards? I don't think so. But, that's my opinion. Others may have a different opinion, that's cool.
